Questions 11 – 15

Read the text about James Cracknell and the questions below. For
each question, circle the correct letter A, B, or C.

James Cracknell
James Cracknell wanted to be a geography teacher, but never became one. Instead, he trained for the
Olympic Games and won gold. He still loves sport, but these days he makes TV programmes about his
travels.

Last year he and his friend, Ben Fogle, decided to travel across the Arabian desert; a place with almost
no food or water. They wanted to make the same trip as another traveller called William Thesiger.
Thesiger made the trip eighty years before them.

First, they had to buy some camels. It's a bit like buying a car – you need to check its health and age! But
for James and Ben something else mattered more. They needed four camels, so the animals had to like
each other. An angry camel is not a good idea in the desert!

A friend, Masalan, who makes similar journeys, gave them good advice. Camels eat most kinds of green
food, but there is little in the desert. He said that they really love a local fruit, as much as humans love
chocolate, and to take a big bag of them. Masalan also told them to follow a daily routine: Get up at
4.30, feed the camels, make a fire, drink tea but not too much water, leave before 7.00. Ride the camels
for 5 hours, walk for 3, and then ride for another 2.

11 Why did James go to the Arabian desert?

A to repeat someone else’s journey

B to meet an old friend who was there

C to try and live on little food and water

12 The most important thing about each camel was that it

A was friendly to the others in the group.

B liked being with both Ben and James.

C was healthy and was not too old.

13 What did Masalan say to James and Ben about food?

A Give the camels the same food that you eat.

B Camels can find enough food in the desert.

C Carry lots of the camels’ favourite food.

14 What advice did Masalan give Ben and James about their routine?

A Wake up at 7:00.

B Don’t sit on camels all day.

C Have either tea or water at breakfast.

15 What do we learn about Masalan?

A He wanted to go with James and Ben.

B He knew about life in the desert.

C He has worked with camels all his life.
