Social Work Information Checklist for Academic Year 2023/24

Background Course Information for Applicants

This course is structured around the Social Work England Professional Standards.
Students will need to fully understand and be able to fulfil these Professional Standards
upon completion of the course. Applicants should familiarise themselves with these
Professional Standards.

As a core part of the learning required on the course, all students will need to successfully
complete a 70-day and a 100-day placement in a suitable social care setting, at least one of
which needs to include statutory based practice. You can find out more about these
placement agencies which are predominantly provided through our Developing Together
Social Work Teaching Partnership

Applicants may also be interested to review the background professional experience and
research interests of our academic staff which can be located on the Staff Profiles section
of the university website.

Declaration of Understanding

Applicants are required to complete the following tables in order to demonstrate that they
understand how the course they are applying for is structured and key requirements/
expectations for student participation.

Information
The Department of Social Work is based at Kingston Hill site but in √
unexpected situations, it is possible that some teaching may take place on
other sites e.g., if a building were to become unusable for some reason.
Some teaching may have to be delivered remotely.
Teaching sessions are normally between 9am-5pm. University teaching is √
for a minimum of 2.5 days a week. You should expect to have to do around
20 hours per week self-directed study. During practice placements students
are required to work the same hours as the agency staff, possibly including
some shift work.
Students’ behaviour must be consistent with regulatory guidance. Where √
this is not the case, Fitness to Practise investigations may be held and may
lead to the student being discontinued from the Programme. Details of
Fitness to Practise investigations may be passed to Social Work England or
other regulatory bodies, and to employing organisations, as a matter of
public safety.
Teaching requires students to participate with their peers in experiential, √
skills and activity-based exercises, role plays and simulations and to take
different roles, including those of service user and service provider. These
exercises may be videoed for learning and assessment purposes, and are
a necessary part of the course.
Students have to use IT routinely, and some assessments, including √
examinations, may be undertaken on-line using IT tools.
At the start of the Programme all social work students are asked to declare √
any past or present personal/ family involvement with social work/ social
care or probation services. This is primarily so that we do not place you in
an organisation from which you have received services.
Placements are provided by our partner agencies primarily within the √
Teaching Partnership which are in southwest London and Surrey’. For
students who live in this area, travelling time to placements is usually
around one hour, but could be up to two hours. But please note, traffic
conditions change all the time, and we cannot guarantee this time
indication. If you live outside of this area, then you should expect to travel
to placements within our catchment region and to have longer travel times.
I understand that practice placements are limited to our partner agency √
areas in Southwest London (Kingston, Richmond, Wandsworth, Merton,
Sutton, Croydon, and Surrey. I am prepared to travel to allocated practice
placements throughout these areas, which will include the private, voluntary
and independent sectors, in order to complete the programme successfully.
I understand that travel in the region of 2 hours each way may be required,
if necessary, in line with Faculty policy.
In order to obtain the required practice placements students, have to √
provide relevant information about themselves and their experience which
will be shared with potential placement organisations.

Students have to meet all travel expenses to and from university. The √
bursary (see below) currently includes a travel element to help with travel
expenses to and from placements. Travel expenses while on placement are
agreed as part of the placement learning agreement.
