CHARACTER TRAITS EVIDENCE &


EXPLANATION
Announcer Naive The announcer believes what
Ian says about where to go
almost instantly
“Are you sure, sonny?..”
“Anything you say. Let’s go.”
Ian Witty Thinks of a good lie to
convince the cameraman and
announcer to go the wrong
way.
“You mustn't come this way.
It’s miles from the hall. The
Head says you’re to go the
other way.”
Cameraman Skeptical Did not believe Ian’s lie right
away and questioned it.
“Looked like a disused
quarry?”
Mandy Helpful Polishes the side of the
swimming pool while Ingrid
lies to the teachers so that
they’ll fall.
“...I make sure that the pool is
nice and slippy.”
Ingrid Witty Thinks of a good lie to
convince the teachers to go
the wrong way.
“Please, Miss, the Head says
you’ve all got to go to the
swimming pool right away.”
Teacher Naive Believes what Ingrid says
right away.
“Come on, everybody. Down
to the swimming pool, double
quick time. Head says so.”

Simon Responsible Taking charge and
responsibility of the tasks
given to him.
“Now, I’m to take charge of
transport with twenty children
to help me.”
Darryl Secretive Mention parts of a ‘Master
Plan' that is not revealed to us
until later on.
“Covering Section C of the
Master Plan.”
Sarah Responsible Taking charge and
responsibility of the tasks
given to her.
“And I’m in charge of the
Work Camps. With fifty
children to help me divide up
the population.”
Dawn Secretive Mention parts of a ‘Master
Plan' that is not revealed to us
until later on.
“Thus covering Section F of
the Master Plan.”
Dinah Logical Debates about their best
options with Lloyd.
“But Rose and Jeff aren’t in
there... They’re the most
dangerous.”
Lloyd Proud Ignores Dinah’s concerns and
does what he thinks is best.
“Stop being so bossy.” [locks
prefect’s door]
“Now let’s help the others.”
Ian Desperate Has a hard time trying to lie
to Eddy Hair.
“Wait, Mr. Hair!... Oh blast!”
Eddy Sensible Does not easily believe Ian’s
lies.
“That’s the only way to get to
the right place.”

Harvey Scared He is scared of the school
basement and his mission.
“I don’t like it down here.” ...
“Help!”
Lloyd Bold Assumes the Head’s
intentions and insults him to
his face.
“You may have beaten us, but
you’re still pathetic, doing
this all for money.”
Ingrid Bold She is bold with her
exclamations.
“Great!”
“No we won’t, you’re
wicked!”
“Let go!”
Dinah Protective Protects her friends by doing
something she doesn’t want
to do.
“All right, I’ll do it. Whatever
you say.”
Ian Submissive Tells his friends to follow the
Head’s orders without putting
up a fight.
“We’d better do what he says,
or they’ll make us do it
anyway.”
Head Cruel Forces Dinah to comply by
threatening to kill them all.
“Children, these are six straw
dolls, no longer required...
Tear them to pieces.”

EXPLANATION
Eddy Humorous Even when in trouble, he still
makes jokes.
“...They’re going crazy at
headquarters. If they’re not
careful, they’ll end up like
me.”
Head Impassive He is good at hiding his
emotions.
[Forcing a smile]
Pupils Hypnotized Have been hypnotized and
are now lifeless.
Sarah Hypnotized Being forced to do something
against her will.
[Lifeless] “I can’t eat that,
Eddy.”
Alec Witty Answers the questions with
speed and ease.
“Thirty.”
Dinah Protective Has to answer correctly
against her will because her
friends are in danger.
[Helplessly] “Six”
Lloyd Witty Figures out the Head’s
intentions.
“That’s it Dinah! He wants to
run the country!”
Lucy Inconvenient Remembered the correct
answer at a very bad time.
“I know! That was the name
of the man in that funny book
you told me about, Dinah.
1984”
Harvey Witty Quickly thought of what to do
when the Head was about to
hypnotize everyone.
“Dinah! The pepper!”
Mandy Optimistic Happy that their plan worked.
“We did it!”

Miss Wilberforce Pitiful Of the circumstances of
Dinah’s situation.
“I’m afraid you’ll have to
come back, Dinah, if you’re
not wanted.”
Mr. Hunter Confused About the kids’ random
change of heart.
“I will never understand
children.”
Mrs. Hunter Confused About the kids’ random
change of heart.
“Whatever’s happened to
make you change your
minds?”
Dinah Worried About Miss Wilberforce's
presence.
[Worried]” Hello, Miss
Wilberforce.”
Desperate and Hopeful That she gets to stay.
“More than anything. Please
let me stay.”

Lloyd Desperate and Hopeful That Dinah gets to stay.


“Forever. Adopt her
properly.”

Harvey Desperate and Hopeful That Dinah gets to stay.


“Please let her stay.”
