Job Title: CUSTODIAN

Reports to: Head Custodian and Superintendent

Basic Function: Custodian is responsible for maintaining, cleaning, and disinfecting all areas of
the school facility. This role involves performing basic cleaning, sanitation, and minor
maintenance tasks to ensure a clean, safe, and pleasant environment for students, staff, and
visitors. The Custodian will also oversee the security of the facility during their shift making sure
things are secure.

Essential Functions:

Assume responsibilities for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for
determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those
left on for safety reasons, are turned off. Activate and deactivate the building security systems.
3. Scrub and disinfect floors, fixtures in the restrooms daily.
Replace soap and paper supplies. Clean water fountain daily.
4. Sweep classrooms daily.
5. Vacuum carpeted areas at least once every other day, more if needed.
6. Dust flat counter surfaces, bookcases, window ledges, telephones and table as needed; objects
do
not need to be removed before dusting.

12. Report major repairs promptly to the head custodian.


13. Move furniture or equipment as requested for various activities as directed by the principal.
14. Keep building premises, including sidewalks and play areas clean at all times.
15. Shovel, plow and/or put ice melt on walks and steps as appropriate.
16. Mow around buildings as requested.

18. Help unload commodities when requested.


20. Pick up mail at the post office daily.
21. Clean the gym locker rooms and coaches’ office daily, making sure that the stools, showers,
sinks and drinking fountains are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected
23. Set up gym and make necessary arrangements needed for all activities.
25. Clean and disinfect track/football restrooms as needed during the seasons in which they are
used.
26. Empty trash cans in courtyard as needed.

28. During summer break, perform the work necessary to prepare the building for the next school
year.
34. Perform such yard keeping chores as grass cutting and tree trimming as necessary, to
maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
36. Remain on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the
use of the building has been authorized and extended work hours have been approved.
38. Conduct periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the school to ensure
their
safe condition.
Other duties as assigned.

Physical & Other Requirements:


1. Sensory modalities (vision and hearing) and physical capabilities (ambulation, strength,
coordination, dexterity, and range of motion) must be sufficient to perform the responsibilities of
the position.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Prior custodial experience preferred.
Knowledge of cleaning and sanitation procedures.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to lift and move heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).
Flexibility to work evening/night shifts as required.

Key Responsibilities: Cleaning and Maintenance:


Perform routine cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and trash
removal.
Disinfect and sanitize high-touch surfaces and common areas.
Monitor and replenish cleaning supplies and materials as needed.
Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, and damages for repair. Security:
Secure the facility at all times during the night shift.
Conduct routine security checks of doors, windows, and entry points.
Respond to alarms or security issues promptly and appropriately. Event Support:
Set up and clean up for school events and community activities held in the facility.
Provide high-level customer service during events, addressing inquiries and assisting with event
logistics.
