Title:- Women Empowerment and Livelihood

Daily Diary: Day 3 at Aknageria
Enhancement Initiatives .
West Bengal , Date: June 12, 2024

Time: 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM

Activity:- Interaction with Self Help Groupsm(SHGs)
women menbers .

On the thirteenth day, I visited a rural village named Aknageria located in West Bengal. I
have observed these things:
1. Focus on Women and Fisheries:

We do know from a government document [rkvy.nic.in] that there are women's self-help
groups (SHGs) involved in small-scale fisheries in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district.
These groups focus on fish culture, likely involving inland ponds for raising fish.

2. SHGs and Broader Fisheries Support:

Even if SHGs aren't directly catching fish, they might be involved in related activities like:

• Fish Processing and Marketing: SHGs could help with cleaning, sorting,
packaging, and selling fish caught by individual fishers.
• Pond Management: Groups might work together to manage ponds used for fish
culture, sharing resources and knowledge.

Finding Specifics:

Here's how you can find more details about SHGs involved in fisheries in West Bengal:

• Government Department: Contact the West Bengal Department of Fisheries

[wbhed.gov.in] or the Department of Self Help Group & Self Employment
[shgsewb.gov.in]. They might have information on SHG programs related to fisheries.

• Local NGOs: Search online or ask around for NGOs working with fisheries or women's
empowerment in West Bengal. They might have connections to relevant SHGs.

While pinpointing online resources about SHGs directly catching fish in West Bengal might be
difficult, we can explore the existing support systems and potential roles of these groups:

3. Women, SHGs, and Fish Culture:

• Focus: The document you mentioned [rkvy.nic.in] highlights women's SHGs involved
in "small-scale fisheries" in South 24 Parganas. This likely refers to inland fish culture,
where they raise fish in ponds instead of open water fishing.
• Activities: These SHGs might:
o Lease ponds: They could collaborate to lease ponds suitable for fish farming.
o Practice polyculture: This involves raising multiple fish species together for
better resource utilization and higher yield.
o Benefit from government schemes: Programs like the Rejuvenation of
Artisanal Fishery Under RKVY (RAFTA) [rkvy.nic.in] support such SHGs with
credit, training, and subsidies.
