Enhancement Initiatives . West Bengal , Date: June 14, 2024

Time: 7:00 AM to 8:45 AM

Activity:- Interaction with Self Help Groupsm(SHGs)
women menbers .

On the fifteenth day, I visited a rural village named Medinipur located in

West Bengal. I have observed these things:
West Bengal has implemented several schemes aimed at supporting Self Help
Group (SHG) women in their journey towards economic empowerment:
1. West Bengal Swanirbhar Sahayak Prakalpa (WBSSP):
o Launched in April 2014, WBSSP focuses on alleviating the interest burden
on SHG loans.
o Benefits:
 Subsidized Interest Rates: The government subsidizes a portion of the
interest charged by banks on SHG loans, making credit more
accessible.
 Streamlined Process: Electronic submission of claims by banks and
direct disbursement of subsidies to eligible SHG accounts by the
West Bengal Swarojgar Corporation Ltd.
2. Swami Vivekananda Swanirbhar Karmasansthan Prakalpa
(SVSKP):
o Established in 2000-2001, SVSKP targets the promotion of self-
employment in both rural and urban areas.
o Support:
 Financial Assistance: Provides funding to kick-start small businesses
across various sectors.
 Skill Development Training: Equips beneficiaries, including women,
with the necessary skills for successful enterprise management.
 Focus on Traditional Crafts: Encourages the revival of traditional
crafts, leveraging local resources and preserving cultural heritage
while generating income.
3. Muktidhara:
o This project specifically aims to empower tribal women by providing them
with sustainable livelihood opportunities.
o Key Aspects:
 Skill Development: Offers training programs tailored to local
economic opportunities.
 Micro-enterprise Support: Assists SHGs in establishing and
managing micro-enterprises, promoting economic independence.
 Sustainability Focus: Emphasizes long-term economic empowerment
through self-reliance and income generation.

Additional Resources:
 While these schemes may not directly involve a 100-day work program, they play
a crucial role in supporting SHG women to build sustainable livelihoods.
 For further exploration, the West Bengal Department of Self Help Group & Self
Employment website may provide updates or additional programs not readily
available online, offering insights into the government's efforts towards women
empowerment and economic development through SHGs.
