Alejandra Rodriguez, a 60-year-old woman who was competing for the title of Miss
Argentina in the Miss Universe beauty contest, saw her historic journey end on May 25th 2024,
when she didn't secure the top spot.
Rodriguez’s story started in September 2023, when The Miss Universe Organization
announced that it would no longer have age limits for contestants — meaning that any woman
over the age of 18 is eligible to compete. The new guidelines are a momentous change from
the previous limit, requiring women to be 18-28. They also gave Rodriguez the chance to join
and win the Miss Buenos Aires pageant, becoming the first 60-year-old contestant to earn the
title and gaining global media attention. In the process, she beat out 34 others, aged from 18
to 73.
This time, although Rodriguez, who also works as a lawyer and a journalist, didn’t take
home the crown that would have let her represent her country in the international pageant,
she did win the “best face” category. She also remains optimistic that the impact of her success,
along with her message, is resonating. “As a result of what happened to me, I believe a new
door has opened for many people who perhaps did not have it easy.”
While many women praised Rodriguez, others questioned whether she was setting an
unreasonable standard for older women. “It’s contributing to a sense that everyone should be
able to look like this, all 60-year-old women should have the appearance of youth and
freshness, as if they were 25,” said Lala Pasquinelli, an Argentine feminist activist. “If they
don’t, it’s because they aren’t willing to make the sacrifices.”

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
No matter how emotionally stable we are, there are always times when we feel like
there are too many things to handle. And when we feel overwhelmed, we may react in ways
that do not help the situation at all or even make it much worse. Therefore, it is important to
make sure that you are not oblivious to these patterns and that you know what to do when
they occur.
People often have great ideas about things that would help them like seeing a therapist
or taking a vacation. However, they dismiss them because they think they’re too busy or that
it’s not the best time. When you have good ideas but don’t act on them, it can lead to a sense
of powerlessness or incompetence. Plus, when you don’t act, you miss out on the potential
gains from trying your ideas. Instead of trying to wait until everything is perfect, choose the
best option that’s easily available to you now. Perhaps you don’t have time to research the
best therapists, but you do have time to pick someone who meets some of your criteria and
try a couple of sessions with them.
Feeling overwhelmed is a very natural emotional response. However, sometimes we get
self-critical about this. We think: “I shouldn’t feel overwhelmed by this. It’s not that hard.”
When you’re self-critical, you become more likely to procrastinate, because not only does this
intensify the feelings of overwhelm that already exists, but also evokes shame or anxiety
about having those feelings. Therefore, it is crucial to practice self-compassion, which
basically means taking a more constructive rather than harsh perspective towards your
efforts and mental state, to motivate yourself and help you focus on overcoming challenges.
Denying sources of support is also a problem. Feeling overwhelmed reduces your
emotional energy, which can lead to changes in your behaviour. Maybe you often give your
child long hugs when they come to you, but when overwhelmed you only give them a quick
squeeze. In this case, not only are you missing a chance to restore your mental energy levels,
but they may also notice the differences and feel hurt. To avoid this, identify ways to have fun
with your loved ones even when you’ve got limited emotional energy. For instance, I like to
draw or build things with LEGO blocks with my 5-yeat-old during breaks, as they are simple
things that we both enjoy. Remember: never refuse an opportunity to fill your emotional cup.
