In addition to the general guidelines provided in the WDC, there are specific Farsi spelling guidelines that

you should pay special attention to. We understand that there may be multiple correct spellings for some
Farsi words, but due to the importance of consistency for our client, we request that you strictly adhere to
the guidelines provided below. Your adherence to these guidelines is crucial in meeting our client's
expectations.

To begin with, kindly visit the webpage of the Virastaran institution to familiarize yourself with the general
spelling guidelines. ‫ ویراستاران‬- ‫(قوانین دستورخط‬virastaran.net)

However, in contrast to Virastaran's guidelines, we prefer writing ‫ قالیچهی کاشان‬,‫ گربهی ملوس‬,‫ خانهی پدری‬instead
of ‫ قالیچۀ کاشان‬,‫ گربۀ ملوس‬,‫خانۀ پدری‬. You can write it by inserting a zero-width non-joiner symbol (using
Ctrl+Shift+2) and then ‫ی‬.

If you are transcribing and come across a word of which you are unsure of the spelling, you can refer to
the ‫( فرهنگ امالیی ویراستاران‬Virastaran Spelling Dictionary). This is especially important when you encounter
a word with a "z" sound and are unsure whether to use ‫ ظ‬,‫ ز‬,‫ذ‬, or ‫ض‬. If you cannot find the word in the
Virastaran Spelling Dictionary, you can look it up in Vajehyab, which is a database of commonly used
Farsi dictionaries. While searching for the word, prioritize using the Moin Encyclopedic Dictionary. If the
word is not found there, you can then look it up in the Dehkhoda Dictionary.

Make sure to avoid the common mistake known as "‫ "هکسره‬in Farsi:

Correct: Incorrect:
‫دست من‬ ‫دسته من‬
!‫یکی هم مثله خودش پیدا شد‬/ !‫یکیم مثله خودش پیدا شد‬
!‫یکی هم مثل خودش پیدا شد‬
(Remember to use a full space before "‫"هم‬.)
‬ (For the sake of consistency, when you hear
‫ را‬as “ro,” write it as “‫رو‬.”)

Furthermore, always remember that adding pronouns to a word does not drop the final ‫ه‬:

Correct: Incorrect:
‫دونهمون‬ ‫دونمون‬
‫بهونهشون‬ ‫بهونشون‬

The tables below are helpful for figuring out when to use a zero-width non-joiner (‫)نیمفاصله‬:

The standard Farsi zero-width non-joiner is inserted by using Ctrl+Shift+2.

If any words are in a different language, they should be marked as foreign. We understand that some
English words and Arabic phrases are commonly used in the Farsi language, but we must mark them as
foreign each time. If a prayer or phrase is said in Arabic or menu names are read in English, both
instances should be marked as foreign. The only exception is for the name of a product or company, for
example, "Photoshop." In these cases, we refer to their name as is.

‫فیلم ویزارد آو اُز‬ The Wizard of Oz ‫فیلم‬

It's important to consider the context when transcribing words. If a word is considered a foreign language
in a certain context, be sure to tag it as such. For instance, in the realm of makeup or when referring to

tools in Photoshop software, the term "brush" is spoken in Farsi as " ‫براش‬," yet in the context of painting, its
Farsi equivalent "‫ "قلممو‬is more commonly used. Therefore, if the context is about painting or referring to
the menu items of an app, and you hear "‫براش‬," it should be tagged as a Foreign Speech. If the audio is
teaching makeup and they say "‫براش‬," you should transcribe it as "‫براش‬."

If an offensive word is said in Farsi, it should be tagged as an "Offensive Speech," and the offensive word
should be transcribed. However, if any offensive word in a different language is used (even if you can
understand it), it should be labeled as "Foreign Speech."

Gamers' usernames and pseudonyms should be considered personally identifiable information (PII) as
they could help identify someone in the audio. In these cases, we should keep the usernames as they
are, using the original alphabet (English characters only).

When typing in Farsi using the Farsi keyboard, you'll notice that numerals appear in English digits.
Despite the English guidelines regarding numbers, please transcribe all numbers in Farsi using Farsi
alphabet letters instead of digits to preserve the Farsi language as much as possible.

The guidelines state: "Use symbols for currency amounts in dollars, euros, and pounds (sterling). Use the
symbol "$" if referring to dollar(s), "€" for euro(s), and "£" for pound(s) or pound(s) sterling." In Farsi, we
typically spell out currency names instead of using symbols. However, for this project, if a currency has a
symbol, we should try to use it whenever possible, as shown in the following table. If a currency lacks a
symbol (like the Rial), spelling it out is the best practice.

What the speaker says What you should do

.‫ دالر دارم‬2 .‫دو دارم‬$

.‫ رو نشون میده‬9 ‫موجودی کیف پولم‬ .‫نه رو نشون میده‬$ ‫موجودی کیف پولم‬

.‫دالر بازم افزایش قیمت داشته‬ .‫دالر بازم افزایش قیمت داشته‬

Use the Farsi spelling system for all punctuation, and avoid using the Arabic keyboard. If you use it, you
will see "‫ "ك‬instead of "‫ "ک‬and "‫ "ي‬instead of "‫"ی‬.

Refrain from using English punctuation marks. Instead, use the Farsi comma "،" (keyboard shortcut:
shift+t) and the Farsi quotation marks «» (keyboard shortcuts: shift+k and shift+l).

Remember to use nunation (tanwīn) when required by Farsi standards, such as in words like ‫ حتما‬and ‫لطفا‬.
If uncertain, consult the ‫( فرهنگ امالیی ویراستاران‬Virastaran Spelling Dictionary). The keyboard shortcut for
inserting ً is shift+q. The other two forms of tanwin are rarely used, although their keyboard keys are
shift+w for ً and shift+e for ً.

Original word After taking tanwin

‫جزء‬ ‫جزئا‬

‫استثنا‬ ‫استثنائا‬

‫ابتدا‬ ‫ابتدائا‬

‫نتیجه‬ ‫نتیجتا‬

‫مقدمه‬ ‫مقدمتا‬

In most cases, the middle hamza is necessary); for example, ‫ رئیس‬or ‫ مطمئن‬or ‫ مشمئز‬or ‫ مسئول‬or ‫ مسئله‬or ‫جرئت‬
or ‫ هیئت‬or ‫ تئاتر‬or ‫ نئون‬or ‫توٲم‬. If you are uncertain, please consult the ‫( فرهنگ امالیی ویراستاران‬Virastaran
Spelling Dictionary).

However, contrary to what the ‫( فرهنگ امالیی ویراستاران‬Virastaran Spelling Dictionary) suggests, the last
hamza is not essential unless its absence causes misunderstanding. For instance, ‫خأل‬/‫ خال‬or ‫سوء‬/‫ سو‬or
‫جزء‬/‫ جز‬or ‫رؤسا‬/‫روسا‬.

Contrary to the ‫( فرهنگ امالیی ویراستاران‬Virastaran Spelling Dictionary), using tashdid is not crucial unless its
exclusion causes confusion. For example, ‫معین‬/‫ معین‬or ‫عِلی‬/‫ علی‬or ‫کره‬/‫ کره‬or ‫بنا‬/‫بنا‬.

Use diacritic signs only when their absence could cause misunderstanding in the sentence, for example,
‫عرضه‬
َ /‫ عُرضه‬or ‫حِ َرف‬/‫ َحرف‬or ‫برد‬/‫برد‬.
