SPECIAL CASE STUDY #1: NAMES
MEAN (ALMOST) EVERYTHING

The labels Latino and Hispanic are often used interchangeably by many in American society. These two labels have
specific historical, geographic, cultural, and linguistic references though. Not everyone who is Latino is Hispanic, and not
everyone who is Hispanic is from Latin America. The very boundaries of Latin America are open to debate because of
French-speaking Quebec (remember from Map Packet#2:Anglo America that French-speaking Quebec is within majority
English-Speaking Canada). The French language derives from Latin (like Portuguese and Spanish, hence the name ‘Latin
America’, or Latin-speaking America), however Quebec is notgenerally included as partof Latin America.
Use the links below to identify on this page’s map which areas/people are Hispanic (Spanish speaking) and which areas
are Latino (from Latin America). Use these directions regarding how to appropriately color each country:
DARK ORANGE: Hispanic but NOT within Latin America
LIGHT ORANGE: Hispanic within Latin America

DARK GREEN: Outline the boundary of Latin America

LIGHT GREEN: Shade the non-Hispanic parts of Latin America
