If you thought temples, sun and sand summed up Tamil Nadu, you would be
M
very wrong indeed. In recent years, Tamil Nadu has become a hotspot for adventure
sports on land, water and in the air.
CI
Tamil Nadu is a treasure trove for trekkers. The Nilgiris, ranging
through long stretches of the State, has traits with spectacular views for trekkers.
Postcard-pretty destinations like Ooty, Kodaikanal and Mudumalai have trails that
thread through hills verdant with tea and coffee plantations and numerous
PE
waterfalls and canyons. Some have ecofriendly campsites, while others cater to thrill
seekers with activities like zip lining and bridge walking. The stunning views are
well worth the moderate levels of difficulty. Kolli Hills is another region much loved
by cyclists, bikers, hikers and trekkers.

water sports. The State’s adventure sports also include parasailing, paragliding,

According to research, regular exercise has numerous health benefits. People
who engage in regular physical activity are less likely to develop chronic diseases such
as heart disease, diabetes and certain types of Cancer. Exercise also helps improve
EN
mental health, as it has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
In addition to these physical and mental health benefits, regular exercise can
also improve academic performance. Studies have shown that exercise improves

brain function, memory and concentration of mind, all of which are important for

confidence. When we engage in physical activity, our bodies release endorphins,
which are chemicals that improve our mood and make us feel good about ourselves.

27 Little warriors fighting cancer
Cancer can affect children as well as adults. Every year, 3 lakh children
worldwide and 50,000 children in India are diagnosed with cancer.
The most common cancers (about 50%) are blood cancers (leukemia,
EN
lymphomas), followed by solid tumours like brain tumours, tumours of kidney, liver,
eye, bone, soft tissues etc.
The symptoms of childhood cancers are similar to common childhood illnesses
and include unexplained fever, body pain, joint pain or swelling, bleeding,
M
weight loss, mass or lump, persistent headaches, vomiting, visual disturbances,
difficulty in walking, fits etc.
In general, childhood cancers are not inherited in families. There are no
CI
identified environmental/dietary risk factors at present.
The treatment involves chemotherapy in blood cancers and multidisciplinary
management (chemotherapy, radiation and surgery) in solid tumours. There is no
PE
screening recommended for childhood tumours except for retinoblastoma
(eye tumour) in newborns.
Early detection is the key to cure. Childhood cancers, are aggressive but
-S
respond well to treatment and have high cure rates (80 – 85%) when treated in a
pediatric cancer centre. Children treated for cancers need long term follow - up for
detecting disease recurrence and side effects.
C
principles of various branches of science. In more simple terms, when scientific logic
is applied to materials, thereby producing equipment that makes a particular
job/work easy and convenient in someway or the other.
TN
Knife, nail, hammer, etc. are the products of technology and are also a kind of
technology in their own way. Man’s relationship with technology is not new and it has
been going on since the advent of civilization. Primitive cave men, those lived millions
of years ago, had innovated simple tools like a spear, wheel, bow - arrow, etc. for
hunting and other purposes. Today, that basic technology has gone through ages of
observation and technical developments, to give birth to a whole new technological
evolution. Automobiles, Machinery and household equipment are some examples of
advancements made in the field of Technology.

A sustainable future is the need of the hour as we witness climate change
impacting different parts of the world, creating an uneven environmental
imbalance, altering weather patterns and inducing calamities. India is not left
unscathed. The key to driving a sustainable future is technology and innovation
through digital transformation. The sum of three factors – Digital Technology (DX),
EN
green Technology (gx) and innovation – is a citizen – centric society that is
encapsulated in good social justice, mindful social development, and futuristic social
advancements. Powering good through social innovation, driven by sustainability
and technology, is no longer a philosophical idea, but a reality. In India, it resonates
with policies and initiatives such as Digital India, make in India, financial inclusion
(through advancements such as Fintech and Antodaya programmes) etc.
M
One of the key ideas delivered by the Hon’ble President of India at the Digital
Awards 2022, was about how India will develop into a powerhouse of knowledge
economy by bridging the digital divide. In that context, social justice should be the
CI
primary objective of digital innovations. Thus we need to foster a society that is
well-informed, healthy, sustainable and ready to face the future (inclusive of
challenges). In other words, a citizen-centric, sustainable society is essential for
social development of the country.
