POSSITIVE EFFECTS
THE MORE THEY READ, THE BETTER THEY
GET AT THAT LANGUAGE.
IMPROVES VOCABULARY KNOWLEDGE,
SPELLING, AND WRITING.
IMPROVES THE CONSTRUCTION OF
SENTENCES.
LETS YOUR STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT NEW

EXTENSIVE VS.
INTENSIVE READING
SIMILARLY TO THE LISTENING SKILL, EXTENSIVE READING IS
THE ONE WE USE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM; FOR
EXAMPLE, WHEN WE READ THE NEWS OR A BOOK FOR
PLEASURE. ON THE OTHER HAND, INTENSIVE READING IS
USED IN THE CLASSROOM WITH A SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE.
SOMETIMES, EXTENSIVE READING CAN BE USED IN THE
CLASSROOM AND VICE VERSA.

SKILLS EVERY
READER MUST

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS
1. IN WHAT WAY(S) HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ABOUT THIS SKILL AND ITS TEACHING
CHANGED ONCE YOU HAVE ANALYZED AND INTERNALIZED THE INFORMATION
EXPLORED IN CLASS AND ON YOUR OWN?
2. HOW CAN YOU APPLY EVERYTHING EXPLORED SO FAR TO YOUR BENEFIT IN YOUR
OWN LANGUAGE LEARNING?
3. WHICH TWO THINGS WOULD YOU TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN TRYING TO HAVE
EFL/ESL STUDENTS LEARN/PRACTICE THIS SKILL?

David Marcial:
Until now, I had not seen how similar reading and listening were. They have
several similarities in terms of how it should be practiced, their types, and
the benefits of practicing it. From now on, I will practice the skill of reading
by taking into account the kind of content I need for each practice of the
principles of reading. I would take into account what exactly needs to be
practiced to give accurate content to the case and apply exercises that test
the things that are considered good readers.

Manuel Cardenas:
I have always understood the importance of reading and its teaching since
that was the way I learned English, though now I have more knowledge of
reading skills and principles. I would try to read authentic material more
often, as I know that is something that will greatly aid me. I would take into
account the content of the reading and the importance of the topic since it
is important for the students to be engaged in the reading.

Jose Cardozo:
Reading, for me, even in both English and Spanish, had always been until
recently a tedious task academically speaking. Now I realize it was because
most teachers do not adapt their methodology to make students engage
with what they are reading, so it ends up being something like a 21st-
century version of the Grammar-Translation Method. The thing I find most
useful both for my improvement and for teaching purposes is preparing
before reading and reading things I am interested in. This means, not using
reading as the main vocabulary learning source, but as a way to improve it,
and always finding a balance between comforting and challenging
readings that align with the student's level.
