Facilitator Guide – Small Group Activity (15 minutes)

Description
Using the Resource 6 worksheet, participants will take 2-3 minutes to log their activities over the last 24
hours. Then using a whiteboard (or similar), the group will discuss the following:
• Identify time wasters
• Discuss different tools for managing time
o Examples: Calendar (paper, google, etc.), Different types of to-do lists
• Discuss how to use these tools effectively, give examples
• Identify trouble areas (ex email management)

Objectives
• Recognize the critical value of effective time management for physicians.
• Compare strategies for structuring workflow to effectively manage time.

Recommended Sequence
1. First, have attendees complete the activity log
2. Next, go to the whiteboard and list time wasters identified by the attendees
3. Ask the attendees for different tools they use to manage their time and discuss pro/cons of different
tools
4. Presenter should give examples of how they use their calendar and to-do or task list effectively
(professional and personal examples)
5. If not brought up already, should discuss email management as this is a large burden on time
management.
6. Ask audience for any other issues or problems they encounter in time management.
