TREE SPECIE PROFILE:

Name/s: KAKAWATE (Tagalog)

• MADRE DE CACAO (Visayan)
• MADRE CACAO (English)
• GLIRICIDIA MACULATA (Scientific)

GENERAL
DESCRIPTION: A small bushy tree that grows to about 5-10 meters. Its numerous
pink flowers fill the crown (just like the cherry bossom trees).

PLANTING ZONE: Inland Beach Forest. Sandy areas away from the shore. Can take
direct exposure to strong winds and extreme sun.

IDEAL SUBSTRATE: Sand or sandy soil.

WATER
REQUIREMENT: When panted in the rainy season, will not require extra watering.

SEED / WILDING
AVAILABILITY: Year-round, grafting is easiest way to propagate.
PLANTING
RECOMMENDATIONS: Branches and twigs from a mature mother tree can be directly
planted into the ground. These grow so easily such that when the
branches are used to stake other newly planted saplings, leaves
soon begin to appear on the stakes.

NOTES: Sturdy and formidable in the harsh beach environment, these

make for good buffer trees at the early stages of regenerating an
area. Also acclaimed for several medicinal uses.
