INTRO

Good morning, Washington and welcome to EMS News. It’s Friday, June 7th 1947 and
we’re here to follow The Cold War.

With the recent implementation of the “Truman Doctrine” and the announcement made by
the Secretary George Marshall this Wednesday 5th, the world awaits USSR’s response as
Europe’s fate hangs in the balance. To bring you closer to the situation, we have Emmanuel
de la Cruz.

ANTECEDENTS AND CONFLICTS

As the whole world already knows, there have been some disagreements between the
United States and the Soviet Union. But what is that called The Cold War?

The ideological opposition between the communist Soviet Union and the capitalist United
States has led to multiple conflicts related to The Cold War such as civil wars, rebellions and
crises.

The United States has made its move to counter the growth of the Soviet bloc the past
march 12th, when the President Harry S. Truman established that the United States would
provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat
from external or internal authoritarian forces.

At the moment, we are waiting for a response from the USSR to the Marshall Plan after
Secretary George Marshall proposed on March 5th that the United States provide economic
assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe.

To give you another point of view on this topic, we have Maria de los Ángeles Correa.

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL SITUATION

But let’s remember that nuclear bombs and weapons aren’t the only things wars are about.
Some of the biggest concerns that come with wars are our country’s economic and social
situation.

At this moment, the United States is experiencing a growth in the middle class, the GPD,
and productivity. Which means there is nothing to worry about the economy yet. But we
should consider that there is the possibility that in the near future our country could go
through recessions or inflation.

Also, people around the world have been facing discrimination thanks to the radical opinions
and ways of leadership we have seen in the past days. This could lead to social disorder and
violence in the streets as a result of people trying to prove their beliefs are superior.

Now my coworker Sara Caicedo will tell you why is this new war so important.
CHARACTERISTICS AND CONSEQUENCES
At this point you may be wondering why this is an alarm if there hasn’t been any war signals.
Well, The Cold War has been characterized for not having a direct armed confrontation and
just being a political-ideological conflict. However, the constant threat of a war is what has
people waiting for the worst.

If The Cold War keeps going in this direction, we can expect that a big part of the world will
be divided in two, one part capitalist, and the other communist. Besides, the dynamic
between these two parts wouldn’t be friendly after all the attempts to make one or another
the better one.

In the worst case, this conflict could turn into a violent war or a nuclear war, knowing that the
USSR has a nuclear bomb and the USA is working on the hydrogen bomb. If this happened,
the losses would be massive around the world.

OUTRO
And we are coming to the end of this broadcast checking the forecast today in Washington
D.C. The capital of the United States experiences ideal weather conditions, with mild
temperatures in the low 70s Fahrenheit. A gentle breeze from the northwest makes outdoor
activities particularly inviting.

Thank you for joining us this morning, stay tuned for updates on the new Cold War. Have a
good day.
