UNIT 3 CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS Describe an occasion in which an explanatory

sketch would be used.An explanatory sketch would be used when presenting a new design
concept to stakeholders or team members. For example, an architect might create explanatory
sketches to illustrate the layout and features of a proposed building to clients, helping them
visualize the final structure before construction begins. While it seems rather obvious that
engineers need to consider the end user, how might this perspective get lost in the design
process? The end user perspective might get lost in the design process when engineers become
overly focused on technical aspects or cost constraints without considering the usability and
experience of the product for the end user. For example, a software engineer might prioritize
adding advanced features to a program without considering how easily the average user can
navigate the interface. Give an example of a product in which ductility would be a particularly
important factor. Explain your answer.A product where ductility is crucial is in the manufacturing
of electrical wiring. Ductility, the ability of a material to deform under tensile stress without
fracturing, is essential in wiring because it allows the wires to be bent and twisted during
installation without breaking. Copper, for example, is a highly ductile material commonly used in
electrical wiring due to its ability to withstand bending and shaping without failure. Why might a
prototype be built with different materials than those used in the final product?A prototype might
be built with different materials than those used in the final product for various reasons, such as
cost-effectiveness, ease of manufacturing, or availability of materials. Additionally, different
materials might be used in the prototype to test alternative designs or to achieve specific
performance characteristics without committing to the expense of using the final production
materials. For example, a prototype of a plastic injection-molded product might be 3D printed
using cheaper materials for initial testing and validation before investing in tooling for mass
production. Which of the careers in engineering discussed in the unit appeals to you the most
and why?The career of a biomedical engineer appeals to me the most because it combines my
interests in biology and technology to develop innovative solutions for healthcare challenges. I
am passionate about contributing to advancements in medical devices, prosthetics, and
diagnostic tools that can improve the quality of life for individuals and address pressing
healthcare needs globally. Additionally, the interdisciplinary nature of biomedical engineering
allows for diverse opportunities to collaborate with healthcare professionals and researchers,
making it a fulfilling and impactful career choice for me.
