MS.

BORELLA

PASIG CITY SCIENCE HS

POROL: Okay po. So good afternoon again, ma’am. Let’s start po with introduction. I am Ariecel Rose R.
Porol, a 3rd year English Major in PNU Manila. Tina?

LLAUDERES: Good afternoon, ma’am. I am Christina Llauderes naman po. A 3 rd year English major din at
Philippine Normal University Manila.

POROL: Okay, so… as you know po, ma’am… we are here to conduct our semi-structured interview
about our research topic entitled, “Rethinking Pedagogy: Challenges and Opportunities of Teaching
English Language in Hybrid Learning Modality”. So rest assured po ma’am that this interview will be kept
confidential and all the information that we will gather po would solely use for research purposes only.
So ayun po, ma’am. Also, ma’am.. you may feel free po to use whatever…language you prefer, ma’am in
answering the questions. I think we can start na po. You
may now introduce yourself by first stating your name, your age, your school… the school that you are
currently teaching at the moment po…your years of experience and the grade level/s that you are
teaching at the moment.

P1: Okay. So my name is Ms. Marie Kristelle H. Borella. Age 36 going 37 this June 29…next week! So
ayun, tumatanda na ako. And then…I’m teaching here in Pasig City Science High School for about
almost…I think 5 years? I’m teaching grade 7 and grade 10 for this school year.

POROL: Just to clarify, ma’am. The 5 years of your teaching experience po, that is only for Pasig Science,
ma’am? Am I correct po?

P1: Uhm…I have 2 year-experience in private school also. So 7 years.

POROL: Ah. So 7 years po all in all and 5 years in Pasig Science. Wow! 5 years. I can only Imagine how
long… 5 years! Thank you for that information po. So we can now proceed with our first question. Let us
first talk about your expectations about your institution. So for our first question po; What have been
your expectations regarding your institution which is Pasig City Science High School, before the actual
implementation of hybrid teaching?

P1: Of course my expectation is for them to really be prepared of the hybrid learning modality wherein
they actually taught us yung health protocols kasi especially that at this time of pandemic, diba? Alam
namang natin lahat na we’re all not ready to be here in school, doing the F2F classes…We were just
expecting to orient us about the health protocols and of course orient us also what to do hybrid
modality because it’s all new to us.
What more kung
hybrid pa? Diba? So it’s all about the transition. So ayun lang, yung orientations.

POROL: So you said po about your institution orienting you po with the health protocols…so with that
po, ma’am… with your expectations po… do you think your institution is already well-prepared in
adapting?
P1: Uhm…kasi we’re just conducting only one HyFlex. So isa pa lang, isang section pa lang naman so not
really sure yet kung talagang ready. Pero somehow, kahit paano, we will be there… parang… ano naman
eh… we will all support one another in case na mangyari naman talaga… I think next year mafu-fully
implement… So we’re just waiting for an announcement. Pero kung ganoon man… we will just attend
some orientation or learn more about it kasi alam ko namang hindi lahat ng teachers kasi kaunti pa lang
Only Grade 7 teachers, and
one section only pa.

POROL: So thank you so much for that, ma’am. So for our next question po, let us move naman to your
language teaching style. So you po as a teacher… we all know naman po na as English teachers we have
like a wide array of strategies and teaching styles and we may vary. So you po personally… Can you tell
us about your language teaching styles po in an online classroom first. And then, tell us something
ma’am… Do you alter this for the hybrid teaching po?

P1: Alter for the hybrid teaching? Hmm… I think it’s just the same kasi you can still communicate with
them through online. And you have more strategies also to do like for example yung mga… sa
technology like yung mga games, something like that. Yun yung mga bagong features na we can use
aside from yung ginagawa natin sa F2F. So, yun yung mga thankful ako na nagagamit namin for the
learning strategy or language strategies.
Unlike the online, we’re not sure if… they are all
getting what you are teaching, kung talagang naiintindihan ba nila. Hindi mo agad mas makikita agad
yon sa online, di ba? Unlike dito sa face-to-face. Pero may magagandang strategies naman na nagagawa
sa online rin. And sa hybrid ba? Sa hybrid?

POROL: Opo. Uhm… yung first po… you mentioned po that you were able to use different kinds of
teaching styles and technological applications and tools po in online classroom. And then, you also
mentioned po that most of the time, these task aren’t… you know… we don’t alter this much po in
hybrid. Especially po that you mentioned that most of the time naman po, naa-adapt naman po siya sa
hybrid teaching po natin. So ayun po, na-answer po yung question natin don.

P1: Yes. It’s just the same naman, yes.

POROL: Thank you so much, ma’am. So ayun po, ma’am. Follow up question lang po ma’am regarding
that one. So uhm… how can you differentiate po the teaching style between in an online classroom and
in a hybrid classroom po? May difference po ba sila?

P1: Yes. Because you have to be multitasking. Like, you also have to think of the… because in the HyFlex
we are doing like… the same time ‘yun ha? Online and team bahay sa iisang session talaga. So, ganoon
siya. So while you’re talking with the F2F class, you’re also talking to the students online. So you have to
make sure that they are still with you. So, multitasking dapat. And you have to be considerate as well
because it’s not all the time that you have to talk with the students sa face-to-face lang. Minsan nga
nadi-disappoint sila…
face class, and then I will say “Ay ‘yung online class nga pala!” I have to call somebody from the online.
So that you know, there’s an equality.
So yun. So, you have to know when to switch. When do you switch…
like… who do you will talk to? Whether if it’s F2F or the students online. Ayun lang. Pero it’s manageable
naman. Hindi naman mahirap.
POROL: Ayun. Thank you so much for that, ma’am. I think, most of my groupmates would also agree
that it is also one of the things that we think about when we think of how do hybrid classrooms work.
Ayun ma’am. So, thank you so much po for answering that question. So moving forward po to our third
question, we would be talking about the materials naman po. The materials and the activities that we
implement in hybrid classrooms. So, for our third question; How do you prepare your materials,
activities, and even you yourself po in a hybrid classroom?

P1: Uhm… It’s just the same lang sa online class rin na inu-upload namin yung materials in a Google
Parang
nagzo-zoom ka lang din naman doon. Tapos, naka-setup na ‘yun eh. Mayroon ng TV doon sa likod, may
TV din doon sa harap. So, I don’t really know how it works pero tinuro naman sa amin kung paano siya i-
So, ganoon lang. Parang online class din siya. Oo, ganoon.
‘Yun nga lang, the problem is, sometimes kapag may mga technical issues… ‘yon. Hindi kami masyadong
aware kung paano ifi-fix ‘yun so we have to call somebody who is really techy. So, yung materials naman
ay… ganoon pa rin naman. Pero minsan, for example for the exam… you also have to print the… ‘Di ba
kapag online paperless? Pero sa face-to-face you also have to prepare ‘yung printed. Ayun. So, dalawa
yung task mo. Ganoon siya. Doble rin yung task.

POROL: Opo, opo. Thank you so much po, ma’am. So, from your answer po, we can infer that your
preparation isn’t so different naman po with your preparation in online classroom, and with your
preparation in hybrid classrooms… ‘yun lang po mas nadadagdagan? Kumbaga?

P1: Nadagdagan kasi dalawa ‘yung iniisip mo.

POROL: Opo. Pero ma’am, I am just curious po. In terms of the materials itself, parehas naman po sila na
nare-receive po na materials?

P1: Yes, parehas naman ‘yun. Modules, yung quizzes. ‘Yung ano lang… ‘yung way mo lang nang ibibigay
sa kanila… sa online, online mo ibibigay. Sa face-to-face, sa face-to-face mo ibibigay. So sa mga quizzes
lang ito ha? Sa mga quizzes or assessment.

POROL: Okay po. So, there po ma’am we see po that the contents or the materials are adapted po even
in hybrid classrooms. So ayun po, ma’am. So with that, ma’am… do you think you are already well-
prepared po for this new mode of teaching?

P1: I think… I think I am because I was able to teach for about uhm… a month or two somehow. Hindi
naman kasi ako talaga ‘yung teacher noong section na ‘yon but I was like a substitute so nakayanan ko
naman siyang mag-adjust ng for about a week. So, kaya naman. The things is, I think it’s much better pa
think prepared naman… as for me ha? I will be prepared for that. Huwag lang magkakaroon siguro ng
technical issues kasi ‘yun talaga ‘yung kailangan ng tulong.
POROL: Ayon. Thank you so much for that, ma’am! Uhm… another follow-up question lang po. Ah, you
mentioned awhile ago po about how materials were uploaded or how do students acquire the materials
that you prepare po. But aside from that, ma’am… in terms of instructional materials naman po… what
applications or technological tools po do you use in the actual creation of various instructional materials
naman po?

P1: Uhm… the application? Aside from PowerPoint?

POROL: Yes, ma’am. Yes po, opo.

P1: Of course, ‘yung Canva… ‘yang mga iyan. For learning strategies, mga Quizziz, Kahoot! Kapag sa mga
learning strategies, ha? Ah, ano pa ba? Jamboard. So ‘yung before, noong mga nagfa-face to face hindi
naman namin alam ‘yung mga ganyang bagay but… you know… as we all know lahat naman tayo walang
So, ‘yun… pinag-aralan namin. I

POROL: Opo. Thank you so much for that, ma’am. So, for our fourth question po… would it be beneficial
for you to conduct English classes and activities in a face-to-face system and in a hybrid classroom po? If
yes, in what way do you think you would benefit po? If not naman po, can you please cite probable
instances po that will explain how it is not beneficial to you as a teacher.

P1: Alin ‘yung beneficial, sorry?

POROL: Uhm… una po is yung face-to-face system and yung pangalawa po is yung hybrid system natin.

P1: Kung beneficial siya sa akin?

POROL: Yes, ma’am. Opo.
