WORK COMPLETION REPORT

For Project Titled

Restoration of Pond in Village

Makrishingray
Date of completion: 10.6.2024
Submitted by: Sakina Faiz (B.E Civil, M.Tech Environmental Engg)

Submitted to: Samarthan Centre for Development Support

INTRODUCTION:
The village of Makrishingray, located 12 kilometers from Kanker district, has 234 families, 90%
of which are tribal families whose main source of livelihood is farming and forest produce. The
primary crop grown in the village is paddy. In the past 10 years, 70 borewells have been dug in
the village, leading to the drying up of wells after which the water level has dropped from 25
feet to 100 feet.

There is a pond present in the village near ITI College which is used for irrigation. Also a sluice
gate and outlet are present along with the pond. But the sluice gate and outlet were damaged
due to which much water could not be retained. For this purpose, an initiative for the
restoration of pond was taken up by Samarthan Centre for development support with the
Support of SBI foundation and after discussion with Gram Panchayat and obtaining permission,
to increase the storage capacity of the pond and repair of sluice gate and outlet.

DESCRIPTION OF TASKS
1. Excavation of Soil: For increasing the storage capacity of the pond, it was essential to
excavate the soil and shift it to some other place. For this purpose there were four regions
identified in the pond where the level of soil was found higher than the pond bed level. The
regions from where soil must be excavated have been given in image captured from Google
Earth Pro. Also the areas have been calculated from Google Earth pro and the depth of soil
assumed from visual observations.

The area of these four regions and assumed depth of soil as per visual observation is given in
table 1. Volume of soil has been calculated on the basis of assumed depths of soil in all the four
regions.

Region 1 1357 0.5 678.5
Region 2 2704 2 5408
Region 3 3019 4 12076
Region 4 1207 1 1207
Total 19369.5

2. Repair of Sluice Gate and Outlet: There was a sluice gate present at one side of the pond
which was damaged and as a result, water could not be retained and flow of water also could
not be regulated. The walls of the sluice gate and outlet were also damaged and needed repair.
For this purpose, the walls of the sluice gate had to be plastered. In the outlet area the walls
were damaged and only one wall was present. So, one wall had to be constructed and one wall
extended so that a proper outlet channel for flow of water is created. Images showing the
condition of sluice gate and outlet before repair are given below.

3. Shifting of soil: After excavation huge quantity of soil around 19000 cubic metres estimated
had to be shifted to some other land. For this purpose, after discussion with the village
Panchayat a government land was finalized where about 90-95% of the excavated soil will be
shifted and then leveled with the help of hyva trucks. About 5% of soil will be utilized for other
government structures.

For these works a work order was released by Samarthan centre for development support and
work contract awarded to M/S Arti Builders in Kanker district on 20th March 2024. A copy of
work order awarded is attached in Annexure I. The details of work order released are given in
table 2 below.

REVIEW OF WORKS COMPLETED

The work for excavation, repair of sluice gate, construction of outlet walls was completed on
10th June 2024. A report of work completion was also obtained from Gram Panchayat
Makrisingray. A copy of the work completion report obtained from Panchayat is attached in
Annexure II. For reviewing the works completed according to the work order, a visit to the pond
site was conducted by a Civil Engineer from Samarthan Centre for development support on 19th
June

The following observations were made for each of the works:

1. Excavation of Soil: Excavation of soil was done with the help of excavators. The excavated
soil was transported to the government land with the help of hyva trucks as shown in image
below.

For calculation of total quantity of soil excavated, the quantity of soil excavated initially for two
to three trips of Hyva was measured. It was found that in one trip of Hyva vehicle around 12
cubic metres of soil was excavated. After this the number of trips completed for each day was
monitored by the locals. A total of 1584 trips were completed. So a total of 19008 cubic metres
of soil was excavated. The image of Pond after excavation work was completed is given below.
The work of excavation completed was found satisfactory and according to the work order
released.

2. Repair of Sluice Gate and Outlet: The lower portion of sluice gate (plate was replaced) and
the rod was repaired and new handle provided. Also the walls of the sluice gate were plastered
with cement. This work was also found satisfactorily completed according to the work order
released. The image of sluice gate after repair is given below.

The outlet of the pond was also reconstructed with one wall fully constructed and one existing
wall extended and then plastered.

The volume of work required in the repair and construction of outlet walls was 40 cubic metres.
The actual quantity of work completed after repair and construction was found to be more than 40
cubic metres. This includes repair of existing wall and construction of another wall on the opposite
side using PCC and brick masonry. Also the base of the outlet was also covered by a layer of PCC.
Hence this work is also done satisfactorily according to work order. An image of outlet wall after
construction was completed is given above.

4. Transportation and leveling of soil: The soil excavated was transferred to a government land
allotted by the Gram Panchayat. The soil has been transported and leveled at the allotted site. This
work has also been completed according to work order. Image of the site where the soil has been
transported is shown below.

transferred and leveled

Hence it is approved that all the works mentioned in the work order have been completed
satisfactorily.
