UNIT I-MEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION SYSTEMS &BIOPOTENTIAL
MEASUREMENT
Generalized scheme of medical instrumentation-statistical analysis of measurement data-
problems encountered with measurements from human beings-errors and type of error in
measurement-general constrains in design and regulation of medical devices-Origin of bio
potential and propagation-electrodes-types of electrodes and their equivalent circuits-recording
problems-motion artifacts, measurements with two electrodes.
UNIT II-RECORDING SYSTEMS
Specification and interpretation of ECG,EEG, EMG-recording of ECG ,12 lead system, EMG
10-20 electrode system-transducers:pressure and temperature measurement-bio amplifiers : need,
types and amplification procedure.
UNIT III-MEASUREMENT OF NON ELECTRICAL PARAMETRS
pH,pO2,pCO2 measurement-colorimeter-spectrophotometer-blood gas analyzer-auto analyzer-Ion
Selective Field Effect Transducer(ISFET)-Immunolgically sensitive FET(IMFET)-Blood
pressure measurement-cardiac output measurement-blood cell counter-dilution
method:indicator,thermal and dye dilution.
UNIT IV-SURGICAL AND ASSIST DEVICES
Spirometry- ventillator- arrhythmia monitor- foetal monitor- incubator- pacemaker- defibrillator-
heamodialysis- heartlung machine- lithotripsy- diathermy.
UNIT V PATIENT SAFETY DEVICES
Physiological effects of current- macroshock and microshock- leakage current- isolation of
patient circuits-test equipments for checking safety parameters of biomedical equipment.
