As an aspiring scholar of English Language and Literature, I am thrilled about the opportunity to

pursue a Master of Arts in English at Missouri State University. My interest in English language
and literature, has been a lifelong passion that began in my childhood. This early fascination led
me to study core literature in high school, laying the foundation for my undergraduate degree in
Bachelor of Education (Arts) with English as my major. My academic journey has been
characterized by a profound love for the written word, a dedication to critical inquiry, and a
curiosity to explore diverse literary traditions and perspectives.

English Language and Literature have always been a source of inspiration and intellectual
stimulation for me. The richness and complexity of the English language, the storytelling power,
and the diversity of literary genres continue to captivate my imagination and drive my desire to
delve into new literary realms. I am particularly interested in African American literature. As a
Ghanaian, I have always wanted to explore themes related to the transatlantic slave trade and
the African diaspora, which have historical connections to Ghana and other African countries. By
engaging with African American literature, I can uncover shared histories, experiences, and
struggles that resonate with my own cultural background. This has led me to the research topic;
“The comparative analysis of African American literature with other diasporic literatures”.

My undergraduate studies in English literature, encompassing courses like Principles of Prose

Fiction, The Language of Drama, The Techniques of Poetry, Contemporary African Writing and
Critical Issues, and Studies in Shakespeare, have equipped me with the essential tools and skills
to engage with intricate literary texts, conduct thorough research, and present compelling
arguments in academic writing. Through these courses, I have refined my abilities in close
reading, textual analysis, and critical interpretation, enhancing my understanding of language
nuances and narrative complexities. Additionally, courses such as Communication Skills and
Varieties of English and Advanced Writing Skill have honed my proficiency in academic writing,
editing, and presentation skills, which are crucial for effectively communicating research findings
and participating in scholarly discourse.

Choosing the Missouri State University for my master's degree in English was a deliberate
decision, driven by the depth of knowledge embedded in the courses offered at the university.
Furthermore, my choice was influenced by a text authored by Dr. Richard Douglass-Chin from the
English department of the University; "Preacher Woman Sings the Blues," which delves into the
relationships between contemporary African American female authors and their predecessors
from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Additionally, the University of Windsor boasts
experienced educators who have a wealth of knowledge from years of teaching, enabling them to
cater to the needs of every student effectively.

In pursuing a Master of Arts in English, my career goals are twofold: to enhance my expertise in
English Language and Literature through advanced coursework and research, and to prepare for a
career in higher education as a teacher, researcher, and mentor. I am eager to contribute to the
field of English studies by conducting original research, publishing scholarly articles, and actively
participating in academic conferences and seminars. I believe that my background and
aspirations align well with the Postgraduate studies at the English department of the University
of Windsor.
