Question 1

Knowing and understanding

This task (questions 1 to 2) addresses the key concept of systems and focuses on criterion A
(Knowing and understanding).

Plants and animals are classi ed based on different criterion.

Plants and animals are the two major classi cation of living things. All species under these two
kingdoms require proper functioning of their body processes to survive. Among the most important of
the body processes is the transport system, which enables all other body systems to function
smoothly and by supplying suf cient nutrients allows members of the species to go about their
normal activities

Question 6

Seed respiration supports germination and growth by converting nutrients into energy.

Presence of biomolecules indicates the amount of energy produced by various plants. A MYP 4
student wants to study the rate of respiration in germinating seeds having different substances such
as wheat (carbohydrates), mustard (fats) and bean (proteins).
Watch the given video and answer the given below question:

Video 6.1

Simulator Procedure:

1. To change the type of seed, select from the drop down list, ‘Select the seeds’.
2. You can increase or decrease the number of seeds inside the beaker by moving the ‘Number of
seeds’ slider accordingly.
3. Increase or decrease the temperature using the slider, ‘Temperature’.
4. Click on the ‘Start’ button to begin the experiment.
5. You can observe that the level of water rises in the delivery tube dipped in the beaker.
6. A timer is shown. Wait till the timer stops.
7. Measure the rise of water level in the delivery tube and enter the values in the test box, ‘Rising
level of water (ml):’ on the left pane.
8. Click on the submit button to verify your result.
9. Click on the information icon to see the inference.
10. You can redo the experiment by clicking on the ‘Reset’ button.

The observations from the simulation are given below. The initial water level was 2 ml .

Question 7

Applying science

The global context is fairness and development. This task (questions 6 and 7) addresses the key
concept of change and assesses criterion D (Re ecting on the impacts of science). In this task, you
will explore how crisis due to unequal distribution of resources are managed.

Water scarcity is the imbalance between water availability and demand, causing widespread supply
challenges.

There’s nothing more essential to life on earth than water. Yet, from Cape Town to Flint, Michigan,
and from rural, sub-Saharan Africa to Asia’s teeming megacities, there’s a global water crisis. People
are struggling to access the quantity and quality of water they need for drinking, cooking, bathing,
handwashing, and growing their food.
Amazing progress has been made in making clean water accessible, with people lacking access to
clean water decreasing from 1.1 billion in 2000 to 785 million in 2017. But there are still many
opportunities to multiply the bene ts of clean water through improved sanitation and hygiene
behavior change.

Q 7.1 From the data given in the task and your wider MYP studies, discuss and evaluate D 13
the implications of unsafe drinking water on the population. In your answer you
should include:

Diseases caused by unclean water

Impact of unclean water on human population
Wider impact of unclean water on the society
A concluding appraisal of all the issues discussed above

Question 8

Radiation therapy employs targeted radiation to treat cancer cells, damaging their DNA and
inhibiting growth.

Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy) is a cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation
to kill cancer cells and shrink tumours. At low doses, radiation is used in x-rays to see inside your
body, as with x-rays of your teeth or broken bones.
Chemotherapy uses drugs that kill dividing cancer cells and prevent them from growing. Many
chemotherapy drugs have adverse effects that can be severe. However, if a doctor recommends a
person has chemotherapy, this usually means that the bene ts are likely to outweigh any adverse
effects.

Q 8.1 From the information given in task, discuss and evaluate the use of radiotherapy D 12
and chemotherapy for treating cancer and recommend which one is better. In your
answer you should include:

The bene ts of radiation and chemotherapy

The limitations of radiation and chemotherapy
Long term side effects of these treatments
A concluding appraisal of all the issues discussed above
