UNDERSTAND
Good Grooming and Personal Hygiene

➢ Good grooming- taking care of yourself and your body and it's
something everyone can and should do.
Personal hygiene- refers to maintaining the body's cleanliness.

➢ There are strict requirements concerning the grooming and

personal presentation standards of valet or butler. One should be
conscious of issues concerning the following.
Wearing of Uniform
Significant Characteristics:
* Its fits properly so it looks good, enables freedom of movement, and is
comfortable to wear.
* It is kept clean. It is a standard requirement to have at least one change of
clothes available to them at work so uniforms can be change when they get
dirty or look "tired". The uniform must always be:
- Pressed, meaning it must be free of wrinkles and look well cared for
- Stain- free and free of marks, dirt or other mess.
* It remains in good repair there must be no loose thread or missing buttons.
* Types and style of shoes to be worn such as black, polished leather shoes.
*Whether or not a name tag is worn. Most valet or butlers do not wear a name tag as this is seen
detracting from and all demeaning the position of valet and butlers.
* A jacket is worn by the valet and they commonly wear a different color or style of epaulette to
distinguish them from other service staff.
* A tie according to the required color.
Standard Grooming Activities Guarantee Personal Presentation and Hygiene. Standard grooming
activities to be considered or applied may include the following:
* Regular washing or bathing.
* Use of a suitable deodorant to help prevent perspiration.
* Used of lightly center after shave or perfume, Strong perfume that is not
predominant or over powering must be avoided.
* Make up must be kept neutral for women no excessive eye shadow and no
dramatic colors for lips or eyes.

2|Pa ge
* Good personal Hygiene habits and practices. Cuts and sore must be kept covered with a clean
dressing. Using a handkerchief or tissue as appropriate. No coughing or sneezing near quest or food
* Men must be clean- shaven or have whiskers neatly trimmed. Many valet need to shave twice per
day to maintain a suitable appearance.
* Hair must always be neat and tidy.
* Hands and nails must be clean and well cared for at all times
* Regular attention to teeth meaning regular brushing of teeth and details check up to help avoid bad
breath.
* Sufficient rest. It is necessary for a valet or butler to be alert and awake.
* Always check appearance in a full- length mirror before reporting for duty.
