Gary Edmundon tackles a challenging project based around the all-3D printed
St. George Model 1:35 scale German K.-Flak truck.
B GETTING STARTED
The instruction sheet for this
model was a downloadable PDF
file, made available for a limited
time to all who bought the kit
during the pre-order phase.
Because of the limited number of
parts, it is quite a small document.
I didn’t follow the process as
mapped out, since I had to leave
off all delicate parts to the end,
and plan for painting the sub-
assemblies as I went.
I did want to show this model
with the hood closed up, but
inevitably detailed and painted
the engine even though it would
be hidden in the final display.

the engine block with Alclad II

fan and drive belt, the engine was
washed with raw umber and black
oil paints, and then details dry-

then glued into position, and the
radiator test-fitted so that the cap
centred exactly in the access hole
at the top front of the cover.
Positioning the driver’s cab,
hood, and louvred front was tricky,
since it all had to line up with no
gaps. Thankfully the fit of all these
parts was excellent, and it’s this

The 7.7cm gun assembly was a very detailed jewel of a kit in itself. Because the parts were so delicate, some repair of the seat supports was needed, and fixed with

B CONTINUING IN STAGES
Before a lot of the construction
could be continued, I had to begin
the weathering process earlier
than I typically would, due to
delicate parts to be added later
and the handling of the model.
The lower chassis which had
been pre-shaded in black, was
airbrushed with light coats of a

The tailpipe and muffler were
painted flat black and then
coloured using pastel chalks of
various browns and earth tones.
The tailpipe was attached to the
muffler using a brass rod, left loose
at first so that it could be aligned
correctly when positioned against
the side of the chassis. I chose not
to drill out the end of the tailpipe,
since it was already dimpled, and
the chance of splitting the brittle
resin was too great. The wheels
were painted and then glued to
their locations again using brass

There was a considerable amount of movement in the suspension and wheel assemblies,

application. I however took the conservative route and keep the wheels in the flat position. Now to the business end of this machine.

MaRK IV MaLE BRItIsh WWI taNK
KIt No. BRs144056
The iconic Male Mk. IV and its Female version (with different armament set-up) needs no
introduction and it is nice to see one appear in 1:144 scale. This will be suitable for the
collector or the wargamer and I can see a few of the turning up in dioramas that will take
up much less room than the 1:76-1:72 or 1:35 equivalents. It appears that Brengun also
produce a Female Tank in this series (BRS144057) and a Mark IV Airship Tug (BRS144058).
These tanks were the first usable armoured tracked military vehicles and, although
ponderously slow, offered protection and hope to troops, put fear into the enemy, and
changed the face of terrestrial warfare forever.
The kit comes in a small stout red cardboard box with a photo of the completed model on
the top. Inside is a resealable clear bag containing 15 parts in grey coloured resin, 28 parts
on one photo-etched fret, decals for two vehicles and instructions.
The casting is just terrific with lovely surface detail and texture and no bubbles anywhere.
Most of the webs to the casting blocks are substantial and will require considerable care
with a saw to remove - do so keeping in mind the toxic qualities of resin dust.
The finest parts comprise the machine gun and cannon barrels and they even have hollow
ends! Tracks are cast integrally with the sponsons and the casting web is sensibly along
the part in contact with the ground.
The photo-etched fret contains a mass of parts, the larger ones making up the box on the
rear deck, the overhead protection structure and various armoured plates and hatches.
There is also a multitude of tiny parts for brackets, tie downs and such-like. Extreme care
will be needed to cut these from the fret and to attach them to the model.
Basic painting instructions for the two decal choices, a British one called Hyacinth and a
captured German one named Heinz (not the baked beans).
This is a terrific little kit that should find its place in many
collections of armoured vehicles from the First Great
Unpleasantness, and because it represents the first usable
AFV in combat. There is a memorial beside a road in
north-east France that commemorates their first battle at
Messines Ridge in June 1917. I have attached an image of
the memorial and one of the large brass models that adorn
it. It was quite sobering to stand at the very spot that
these vehicles were first used in battle, its so peaceful now
surrounded by farmland.

KING TIGER “PORSCHE TURRET” PHOTO-ETCHED SET
1:72 SCALE
ITEM NO. HLH72054
Designed for the Revell kit, this set consists of two frets, one 50x25mm for all of the fine grills
over the engine compartment, and the other larger one, 60x50mm for an amazing amount of fine
exterior detail, all contained inside the familiar clear stapled sleeve.
This larger fret is quite mind-blowing with tiny double-sided tools and their clamps, storage boxes,
exhaust shrouds, hatch details, and seven tiny multi-fold vision ports for the cupola - hope you have
a good lens and eye-glass! These will enable the modeller to produce an eye-popping replica as the
parts are far superior to the plastic bits they replace or enhance.
Instructions fill both sides of an A5 sheet and give clear indications about where to fold and locate
the parts. No painting instructions are given.
An absolute cracker of a model can be produced using this set.
Advantages: amazing amount of exterior detail that will enhance your model, good clear
instructions.
Disadvantages: none noted apart from the tricky tiny folding required for the vision block parts.
Conclusion: a fabulous detail set that will really enhance the Revell kit of this formidable late war
German tank. Highly recommended.

ITEM NO. HLH72039
Designed for the MK72 kit but could probably be used on any 1:72 kit of this very common vehicle
and I suspect many of the parts will fit any variant of this vehicle. There are two frets inside the
familiar clear stapled sleeve. One is tiny with just two grills but the larger 65x50mm fret contains
a mass of parts to enhance the interior and exterior of the vehicle interior controls and instrument
panel, hatch details, a shield for the m/g and lots of brackets, tool and storage racks, hooks,
handles, tool clasps and other doodads that festooned the outside of the vehicles. Curiously, there
is no steering wheel. No paint details are given.
The instructions occupy both sides of an A5 sheet and are clear and well drawn.
All of this will certainly enhance any model of this vehicle
and the set comes highly recommended.

I’ve always wanted a WWII motorcycle in 1:48 scale. Well, rejoice folks, it is
here and it is good.
What has always bugged me is a good way of producing scale spokes in any
scale let alone in 1:48. From the look of this sample, I can tell you this 3D
Printing gig has come to the party. This one is a gem with a capital G. The
spokes are in scale and one has to wonder how they did it.
The characteristic printing sprues looked daunting when I opened the
packaging and you need the skills of a micro surgeon to remove them but
wow, when done you are left with a very impressive little model.
After I got over the sheer euphoria of removing the printed sprue gates and
marvelling at how fine the spokes where I looked at the model with a more
cynical eye. 3D printing by its very nature tend to leave print ridges on some
surfaces and depending on the resin used can be difficult to remove. On this
model the fuel tank had faint print lines (but these were easily removed) and
the tyre tread was a little too faint rendering it impossible to see after clean up.
The drive chain also seemed to be on the wrong side but apart from that, the
model is a gem and very much welcome.
Highly Recommended.

MORRIS LRC
ITEM NO. T48485
The Morris Light Reconnaissance Car (LRC) was a British light armoured
car for reconnaissance use produced by Morris Motors Limited and
used by British and Commonwealth formations during the Second
World War.
The Nuffield Group had been brought in to supplement production of
light reconnaissance cars by Standard Motor Company (Beaverette) and
Humber (Humber LAC, also known as "Humberette").
The vehicle had an unusual internal arrangement, with the three-
man crew sitting side by side by side with the driver in the middle, a
crewman manning a small multi-sided turret mounting a Bren light
machine gun on the right, and another with a Boys anti-tank rifle
(mounted in brackets in the hatches on the hull roof) and access to radio
set on the left. From 1940 to 1944, over 2,200 were built.
The vehicle was used in the North African, Italian and in
North-West Europe campaigns. Some served with the RAF
Regiment, others were given to Polish units.
One of the surviving vehicles is on display at the Imperial
War Museum Duxford, another at The Tank Museum,
Bovington, and another at the Military Museum at Port
Dickson, Malaysia.*
FC Modeltrend has a growing range of 3D printed
accessories and full kits. Their newest 1:48 scale 3D
offering is a full kit of the Morris Light Reconnaissance Car.
This is a jaw-dropping example of its type. The kit is
supplied in just seven main pieces – hull, turret and five
wheels – plus thee smaller parts for the rear wheel wheel
covers and the grille for the rear hull.
Detail is stunning. All smaller detail elements are printed
directly onto one of the six major pieces including the gun,
smoke discharger and various hinges and hollow handles.
The only design issue is that one of the fine and delicate
rear vision mirrors had broken off in transit, and the other
one broke off as I was unpacking the parts.
Printing quality is excellent although there are some
striations visible, particularly on the engine deck. These are
parallel marks on the surface that are sometimes left by the
