Might of the Undefeated Exhibition. Tanks on Kreschatyk Street, Kyiv. Much of the
equipment of the Ukrainian Armed forces is of Soviet origin. Following the dissolution
of the Soviet Union and the high cost of maintenance many vehicles were sold to foreign
buyers or put into storage. With the Donbas fighting these were re-commissioned. Nearest

during the pre-order phase.
Because of the limited number of
parts, it is quite a small document.
I didn’t follow the process as
mapped out, since I had to leave
off all delicate parts to the end,
and plan for painting the sub-
assemblies as I went.
I did want to show this model
with the hood closed up, but

washed with raw umber and black

B CONTINUING IN STAGES
Before a lot of the construction
could be continued, I had to begin
the weathering process earlier
than I typically would, due to
delicate parts to be added later
and the handling of the model.
The lower chassis which had
been pre-shaded in black, was
airbrushed with light coats of a
Tamiya acrylic mix I call “brownish

combination of discarded remnants
of greens, greys and browns that

The tailpipe and muffler were
painted flat black and then
coloured using pastel chalks of
various browns and earth tones.
The tailpipe was attached to the
muffler using a brass rod, left loose
at first so that it could be aligned
correctly when positioned against
the side of the chassis. I chose not
to drill out the end of the tailpipe,
since it was already dimpled, and
the chance of splitting the brittle
resin was too great. The wheels
were painted and then glued to
their locations again using brass
wire to strengthen the points of
attachment. The tires appeared in The steering column was not mentioned in the instruction sheet, but a prompt The radiator had to be precisely fitted so that the cap ended up directly in the

C
UISITION
ast your mind back to a time where model
shows were the norm, and we were all
free to parade around the display tables
covered in mini masterpieces. Not only
were the shows a feast for the eyes but they
were an assault on the senses! Whilst the displays
are why we all go, there was always that air of
anticipation as to what you might find on the
(somewhat unpredictable) Swap and Sell tables.
Piles and piles of second-hand kits at bargain
prices, too good to be true. A corner of the hall
where only the strong survive!
Some get in quick for the best bargains whilst
others hang around until the end in the hope an
eager seller with a sharpie in hand is prepared
to start slashing prices with 30 minutes to go…
But the thing I love the most about the Swap and
Sell tables is sometimes you hit the jackpot. You
know that feeling…you see something that looks
interesting and is reasonably priced, so you pick
the box up to inspect it a little closer, and when
you do you can’t help but notice it weighs a little
more than you were expecting. Then as the lid
comes off you see the aftermarket tracks and
barrel. Lovely! ‘I’ll have that thanks!’…
And that is how this interesting little subject
found its way into my stash. A tasty little kit with
metal tracks and barrel, priced around half the
original retail price. What’s not to love about that?
But as this scenario tends to go, the bargain of the
century makes its way home and gets tucked away
in the stash to continue its slumber only this time
under a different roof.
A few years pass and I am looking through
the stash for some inspiration when this little
RSO comes into focus. I took it from the shelf
to have a look through the schemes and again
noticed the weight was suspiciously heavier than
I was expecting and then I remembered all the
aftermarket it had come with. I had completely
forgotten about it, so in a way I got a chance to get
excited about it all over again. I’d found the kit to
build, and I didn’t have to go looking for anything.
Someone had already done that for me, and I was
ready to go.
The RSO is an interesting vehicle and is an
often-overlooked modelling subject. I have always
been attracted to the fringe and tracked support
vehicles, so this subject was always going to be in
my pocket. Developed by Steyr as a support and
supply vehicle, it quickly proved itself to be far
more capable of dealing with the poor conditions
of the Eastern front than some of the more
traditional support vehicles. As Germany began
facing increasing numbers of allied armour it was
apparent that an anti-tank weapon was needed
to boost their firepower, and it needed to be
commissioned quickly.
Whilst the RSO was always able to tow anti-tank
weapons to the front, it was found that in doing
this the aiming sights were often be knocked out of
calibration and rendered faulty. After several trials,
it was found that a Pak40 was able to be mounted
on the rear deck of a modified RSO chassis, hence
giving the Germans the ability to have a mobile
anti-tank gun that could be manoeuvred and fired
more quickly than previously possible.
Unfortunately, the 7.5cm Pak40 auf
Raupenschlepper Ost (RSO) proved to be less than
successful on the battlefield due to the difficulty
in accessing the ammunition stored in the floor of
the platform as well as a small fighting platform.
The crews who manned this machine christened
the ‘Rolling Coffin’ due to the scant protection the
vehicle provided the soldiers. But enough with the
history. Let’s get on with the build. A

add interest to the assembly, two part epoxy putty was used to

They weren’t supposed to represent anything in particular. They
were there to add some organic shapes to soften the hard lines in

Because it is my intention to paint this vehicle

in a whitewash finish it was important to paint
the ‘interior’ sections of the driver’s cabin first
and then mask them off for subsequent painting.
Much like how you would approach an aircraft.
I wanted to show the interior to be quite heavily

The inner surfaces of the chassis were

painted using Dark Yellow 2 from Tamiya.
The engine section was finished in a dark grey
with details hand painted using Vallejo acrylics.
Most of these areas will never been seen, so
painting them was just an insurance policy.

The chassis assembly and the driver’s compartment

were then treated with two coats of hairspray and
sprayed with Tamiya Dark Yellow 2. (just the internal
sections on the drivers’ compartment). Almost
immediately the dark yellow sections were chipped using
water and an old brush. The engine was also treated
with dust-coloured pigments to give it a used look.

The wheels, drive sockets and suspension assemblies

are painted and treated the same way as the chassis
and interior. A dark black brown as a base, a couple
of coats of hairspray and the dark yellow chipped
over the top. The rubber sections of the wheels were
simply hand painted using Vallejo Black Grey acrylic.

With the bulk of the sub-assemblies completed the model now started to take shape.
The driver’s cabin, rear deck and wheels were attached to the chassis. Fit was very good.
There was a considerable amount of movement in the suspension and wheel assemblies,
so should you wish to pose the model on rough terrain it would be a perfect model for that
application. I however took the conservative route and keep the wheels in the flat position. Now to the business end of this machine.

Painting and Weathering

With all the sub-assemblies in place the construction phase
of the RSO now is complete. To protect the finish on the
wheels and the interior sections of the cabin a basic mask
was made using masking tape and pieces of sponge. The
model was then treated to a coat of Mr Surfacer 1000. The
primer was decanted and applied with the airbrush rather
than from the can to ensure a clean and even application.

Once the primer has dried

overnight, a dark mix of black with
a touch of Brown is applied to the
steel sections of the RSO. This will
serve as the chipping colour.

The timber trays are now painted

in various tones of grey with
highlights of buff. The colour
palette is designed to represent
aged timber and will later become
the chipping colour for the wood.

The model then receives two coats of the trusted hairspray and is
top coated in Tamiya acrylic Dark Yellow 2. The finish is enhanced
using a mix lightened with white. Most of the effect will be lost
under layers of weathering however the colour modulation will
add another layer and help add depth to the finished model.

A brush moistened with tap water is then employed to start removing the top layer of the paint. The water The chipping continued around all the model. Further scratching and shipping were added to the front

30 Model Military International - June 2022

After the initial round of chipping was complete and the model
was completely dry, a coat of semi-gloss varnish was applied.
Once completely dry the hairspray made another appearance.
After two coats of the hairspray a clouded coverage of white
was applied. I used the Vallejo white for this because the
acrylic paint is very easy to chip, and I wanted to have a few
chipped layers for the whitewash. This initial layer would be
heavily chipped, and the next layer would be less so.

The initial layer of acrylic white is heavily chipped and again, the model

quite bright, a heavily thinned mix of IPA and clear smoke
were selectively applied as a post-shade. The post shade
works the same way as a pin wash but adds a different depth
due to the soft edges around the panel lines and recesses. It
will work perfectly with the wash that was to follow.

Crews would often rig webs of wiring to hold foliage and help with
the effort to camouflage the vehicle. To add a little further interest
to the build fine lead wire was weaved between the mounting points
of the shield. I won’t pose it with any foliage however the lines of
the wiring add an additional layer to the build.

Conclusion
B I know that Dragon kits can polarise some people and
they do cop flak at times about complicated instructions
and high part counts, but I really enjoyed this build. I
find the subject interesting and it is something you don’t
often see. The foundations and the lines of the RSO
made it a perfect candidate for the layered whitewash
and muddy finish of the Eastern Front. n

were to replace all the

Tamiya XF-2 ‘Flat White’, creating a fairly light undercoat
for the Dunkelgelb basecoat from the AK-Interactive Real

better when applied over a light-coloured undercoat.
Weathering

For the Dunkelgelb

basecoat, I used
AK-Interactive
RC059 shade.

Using a mixture of AK-Interactive’s RC057 ‘RAL 7021 Dunkelgrau’

and RC068 ‘RAL 8017 Rotbraun’, I accentuated the edges and
details of the vehicle in a post-shading process.

This was followed by a misted application of a lighter Dunklegelb The meandering camouflage lines were airbrushed freehand using a mixture of AK-Interactive’s
shade, i.e. AK-Interactive RC060, which was further lightened by RC105 ‘Spanish Green’ and a small quantity of RC018 ‘Pale Sand’. I always tend to use lighter

The details were brush painted with

various colours from the AK-Interactive 3rd

applied the decals which went on flawlessly
with a little help of Microscale decal solutions.

38 Model Military International - June 2022

With AK-Interactive AK11036 ‘Ice Yellow’, I added light sand paint chips using a
fine brush and a piece of sponge.

To bring out the details, I applied a pin wash with Abteilung 502 ABT090 ‘Industrial Earth’ oil. In my opinion this greyish brown tone
work well for vehicles finished in light sand or yellow colours.

Dark greyish brown coloured chips were painted over most, but not all, of the
sand ones, creating the necessary depth.

My planned scene could not be done without the actors. The railcar crew comes from Glowel Miniatures, whilst

Next, I test-fitted the wooden bridge deck and cut the plastic railway track supplied with the

To unify the groundwork in terms of colour, I applied three earthy pigment tones from AK-Interactive. Now it was time to replicate the water stream using epoxy resin. For this purpose, I firstly had to create a

The mixture was then carefully poured into the streambed and left to dry thoroughly for 24 hours. The waves were recreated using Vallejo 26201 ‘Water Texture’ that had been applied with a silicone brush.

add the bridge deck and railcar with its crew, finishing my vignette.

VIGNETTES ACRYLIC
A.MIG-2152 - MUD LIGHT EARTH GROUND
A.MIG-2156 - SAND GROUND
A.MIG-2157 - ASPHALT GROUND
AMMO has launched a new series of acrylic texture materials called
Vignettes Acrylic. These are all packaged in a generous 100 ml plastic
container with a screw-top lid. The container is also sealed with foil,
which you can peel off the first time that you use the product.
The first product to be reviewed is their item no. A.MIG-2152 - Mud Light
Earth Ground. This is a thick, gritty acrylic paste. It comes in a pale earth
colour, but you will be able to tint the shade with any acrylic paint. Also,
AMMO has another five earth and mud shades in this series, so you’ll be
able to achieve plenty of variety.
AMMO’s Vignette Acrylic mud may be used as groundwork or directly on a vehicle. It looks like
this would work well as dried mud on the lower hull and running gear of vehicles, and also on the
recessed surfaces of tracks.
Next up is A.MIG-2156 – Sand Ground. As you’d expect, the texture on this one is not as
pronounced as the Light Earth. This will be perfect for creating desert groundwork or weathering
of desert-based vehicles.
Lastly in this batch, A.MIG-2157 Asphalt Ground will be appropriate for creating asphalt road
surfaces or perhaps larger compounds. This one will be specifically for groundwork.
This is an interesting new range from AMMO. I have been looking for a replacement for my
beloved Maru Technics Easy Mud range, now long unavailable, and I think that these new acrylic
texture paints might just do the trick.
All Recommended.

KIt No. BRs144056
The iconic Male Mk. IV and its Female version (with different armament set-up) needs no
introduction and it is nice to see one appear in 1:144 scale. This will be suitable for the
collector or the wargamer and I can see a few of the turning up in dioramas that will take
up much less room than the 1:76-1:72 or 1:35 equivalents. It appears that Brengun also
produce a Female Tank in this series (BRS144057) and a Mark IV Airship Tug (BRS144058).
These tanks were the first usable armoured tracked military vehicles and, although
ponderously slow, offered protection and hope to troops, put fear into the enemy, and
changed the face of terrestrial warfare forever.
The kit comes in a small stout red cardboard box with a photo of the completed model on
the top. Inside is a resealable clear bag containing 15 parts in grey coloured resin, 28 parts
on one photo-etched fret, decals for two vehicles and instructions.
The casting is just terrific with lovely surface detail and texture and no bubbles anywhere.
Most of the webs to the casting blocks are substantial and will require considerable care
with a saw to remove - do so keeping in mind the toxic qualities of resin dust.
The finest parts comprise the machine gun and cannon barrels and they even have hollow
ends! Tracks are cast integrally with the sponsons and the casting web is sensibly along
the part in contact with the ground.
The photo-etched fret contains a mass of parts, the larger ones making up the box on the
rear deck, the overhead protection structure and various armoured plates and hatches.
There is also a multitude of tiny parts for brackets, tie downs and such-like. Extreme care
will be needed to cut these from the fret and to attach them to the model.
Basic painting instructions for the two decal choices, a British one called Hyacinth and a
captured German one named Heinz (not the baked beans).
This is a terrific little kit that should find its place in many
collections of armoured vehicles from the First Great
Unpleasantness, and because it represents the first usable
AFV in combat. There is a memorial beside a road in
north-east France that commemorates their first battle at
Messines Ridge in June 1917. I have attached an image of
the memorial and one of the large brass models that adorn
it. It was quite sobering to stand at the very spot that
these vehicles were first used in battle, its so peaceful now
surrounded by farmland.
Recommended to 1:144 scale modellers.

HAULER
M20 ARMOURED UTILITY CAR PHOTO-ETCHED SET
1:72 SCALE
ITEM NO. HLH72099
A single 70x50mm photo-etched fret is inside the familiar clear resealable sleeve with a double-sided
A5 instruction sheet. Designed to improve the interior and exterior of the Italeri kit of the M20, this
fret should help the modeller produce a great little replica.
Parts include new floor details, control levers, steering
wheel, dash-board with clear film instruments, hatches and
latches, m/g mounts and handles, grab handles, seats, racks
and handles for the fuel cans. All are beautifully etched and
will enhance an M20 model no end. Instructions are clear
with step-by-step stages covering the major areas.
No paint details are given.

Advantages: well etched and superior detailing for the

Italeri kit, good instructions.
Disadvantages: none noted
Conclusion: an excellent fret to help the enhancement of
a nice little kit. Recommended for the 1:72 AFV modeller.

HAULER
KING TIGER “PORSCHE TURRET” PHOTO-ETCHED SET
1:72 SCALE
ITEM NO. HLH72054
Designed for the Revell kit, this set consists of two frets, one 50x25mm for all of the fine grills
over the engine compartment, and the other larger one, 60x50mm for an amazing amount of fine
exterior detail, all contained inside the familiar clear stapled sleeve.
This larger fret is quite mind-blowing with tiny double-sided tools and their clamps, storage boxes,
exhaust shrouds, hatch details, and seven tiny multi-fold vision ports for the cupola - hope you have
a good lens and eye-glass! These will enable the modeller to produce an eye-popping replica as the
parts are far superior to the plastic bits they replace or enhance.
Instructions fill both sides of an A5 sheet and give clear indications about where to fold and locate
the parts. No painting instructions are given.
An absolute cracker of a model can be produced using this set.

Advantages: amazing amount of exterior detail that will enhance your model, good clear
instructions.
Disadvantages: none noted apart from the tricky tiny folding required for the vision block parts.
Conclusion: a fabulous detail set that will really enhance the Revell kit of this formidable late war
German tank. Highly recommended.

HAULER
SD.KFZ 250/1 PHOTO-ETCHED SET
1:72 SCALE
ITEM NO. HLH72039
Designed for the MK72 kit but could probably be used on any 1:72 kit of this very common vehicle
and I suspect many of the parts will fit any variant of this vehicle. There are two frets inside the
familiar clear stapled sleeve. One is tiny with just two grills but the larger 65x50mm fret contains
a mass of parts to enhance the interior and exterior of the vehicle interior controls and instrument
panel, hatch details, a shield for the m/g and lots of brackets, tool and storage racks, hooks,
handles, tool clasps and other doodads that festooned the outside of the vehicles. Curiously, there
is no steering wheel. No paint details are given.
The instructions occupy both sides of an A5 sheet and are clear and well drawn.
All of this will certainly enhance any model of this vehicle
and the set comes highly recommended.

Advantages: a great set of detail parts for the interior and

exterior of the kit, good instructions.
Disadvantages: none noted
Conclusion: An excellent set that will really help a
modeller complete a great replica of this almost universal
German AFV from WWII.

All Highly Recommended.

I’ve always wanted a WWII motorcycle in 1:48 scale. Well, rejoice folks, it is
here and it is good.
What has always bugged me is a good way of producing scale spokes in any
scale let alone in 1:48. From the look of this sample, I can tell you this 3D
Printing gig has come to the party. This one is a gem with a capital G. The
spokes are in scale and one has to wonder how they did it.
The characteristic printing sprues looked daunting when I opened the
packaging and you need the skills of a micro surgeon to remove them but
wow, when done you are left with a very impressive little model.
After I got over the sheer euphoria of removing the printed sprue gates and
marvelling at how fine the spokes where I looked at the model with a more
cynical eye. 3D printing by its very nature tend to leave print ridges on some
surfaces and depending on the resin used can be difficult to remove. On this
model the fuel tank had faint print lines (but these were easily removed) and
the tyre tread was a little too faint rendering it impossible to see after clean up.
The drive chain also seemed to be on the wrong side but apart from that, the
model is a gem and very much welcome.
Highly Recommended.

MORRIS LRC
ITEM NO. T48485
The Morris Light Reconnaissance Car (LRC) was a British light armoured
car for reconnaissance use produced by Morris Motors Limited and
used by British and Commonwealth formations during the Second
World War.
The Nuffield Group had been brought in to supplement production of
light reconnaissance cars by Standard Motor Company (Beaverette) and
Humber (Humber LAC, also known as "Humberette").
The vehicle had an unusual internal arrangement, with the three-
man crew sitting side by side by side with the driver in the middle, a
crewman manning a small multi-sided turret mounting a Bren light
machine gun on the right, and another with a Boys anti-tank rifle
(mounted in brackets in the hatches on the hull roof) and access to radio
set on the left. From 1940 to 1944, over 2,200 were built.
The vehicle was used in the North African, Italian and in
North-West Europe campaigns. Some served with the RAF
Regiment, others were given to Polish units.
One of the surviving vehicles is on display at the Imperial
War Museum Duxford, another at The Tank Museum,
Bovington, and another at the Military Museum at Port
Dickson, Malaysia.*
FC Modeltrend has a growing range of 3D printed
accessories and full kits. Their newest 1:48 scale 3D
offering is a full kit of the Morris Light Reconnaissance Car.
This is a jaw-dropping example of its type. The kit is
supplied in just seven main pieces – hull, turret and five
wheels – plus thee smaller parts for the rear wheel wheel
covers and the grille for the rear hull.
Detail is stunning. All smaller detail elements are printed
directly onto one of the six major pieces including the gun,
smoke discharger and various hinges and hollow handles.
The only design issue is that one of the fine and delicate
rear vision mirrors had broken off in transit, and the other
one broke off as I was unpacking the parts.
Printing quality is excellent although there are some
striations visible, particularly on the engine deck. These are
parallel marks on the surface that are sometimes left by the
