When to start?
The NHS suggests around 6 months. Trust your instincts and
be guided by developmental milestones and signs of
readiness.

If you think your baby is ready before 6 months, it’s a good


idea to check with your health visitor or GP.

Can your baby….


1) Sit with minimal support and hold their head steady?

2) Swallow food rather than spitting it back out again?

3) Coordinate movement between eyes, hands + mouth in


order to bring food to their mouth?

Yes?.. it’s time to begin!


Getting Started
At the beginning, the aim is to…
1) Develop your baby’s oral motor skills for biting and chewing
by exposing them to a variety of textures.
2) Expose baby to a wide variety of flavours. Expanding their
palette early may reduce later fussiness!
3) Top up iron stores. Baby is still getting almost all essential
nutrients from milk feeds. However iron stores start to run low
on iron at around 6 months which is why the NHS recommends
introducing solids at this time.

We are born with an innate liking of sweet tastes. Research


suggests that by introducing vegetables first, this may
encourage a broader acceptance of vegetables in the months
and years to come.

Try vegetables like…. Swede


Broccoli Cabbage
Spinach Potato
Courgette Leek
Swede Cauliflower
What should I avoid?

Sugar / Honey / Artificial Sweeteners / Salt

What texture is right?

For puree, start with smooth, yoghurt like


consistency. Then work towards more lumpier
texture, as well as soft finger foods to develop
oral motor skills.

Choosing Baby led weaning? Think


about these 3 ‘S’s

SIZE? an adult finger or larger


SHAPE? stick or chip shaped
“SQUISHABLE”? between thumb and
forefinger
Introducing Allergens
The NHS guidance and recent
research supports introducing the
major allergens from 6 months.

Introduce early in the day, at breakfast or early lunch, so there is


plenty of time to observe any possible reaction

Start small (¼ -½ tsp), increase over a few days and then


maintain regularly as part of diet.
Only introduce allergens when your baby is otherwise well, ie
no big eczema flare ups or colds

Introduce each allergen one at a time, and a few days apart.
