BASHING T HE BU
Sylwester Sikora slams
Tamiya's 1:24 VW Beetle,
right into the tarmac!

8 December 2021 TMMI 314

UG! A
t the outset, I want to
say that this classic
1994 Tamiya model,
despite its years, looks
good and there are no major
problems with assembly.
From the beginning, my
plan was to change its
appearance and always,
it would involve changing
the wheels, lowering the
suspension and widening
the body. For each project,
I look for inspiration on
the internet by watching
modified vehicles in a 1:1
scale. The wheels used for
this project are 3D printed
items by 'Trojan Scale'
depicting 'Schmidt TH-Line'
rims. The wheel pattern
itself was on offer, but at my
request, the dimensions and
depth were changed.
In order to lower the rear
suspension, it was enough
to glue the parts in the
opposite direction and lift
them up (parts C9), and
drill holes for parts C8 and
C15, which allowed them to
be mounted in any position.
The front suspension
required cutting the entire
part C10 and reattaching
the arms holding the hubs
in a higher position. In
order for it to not all fall
apart, the fasteners were
drilled and strengthened
in the centre using a metal
rod with a diameter of
0.5mm. The wheel arches
were deepened to allow the
wheels to fit into them and
then the extending overlays
were made of 0.5mm plastic.
The trim on the front apron
optically lowering the front
of the car was made from
the same material. And
there we are: a slammed VW
Beetle! l

this was simply the result

the production kits will be

is worth pointing out that
if that is the case, some

the metal finish is not to be

I only had to touch up the joints and not worry about
masking the interior as the external paint was sprayed on

With the upper and lower fuselage halves joined and cleaned up, any touching up carried

needed to be carefully masked and then the areas where paint had pealed off, stippled with

HARD-HITTIN
Part one Marcus Nicholls begins the construction of
Tamiya's all-new 1:35 M18 Hellcat GMC kit

30 December 2021 TMMI 314

NG HELLCAT
“The path to hell is paved
with good intentions”, so
goes the hackneyed phrase.
And in this instance, my
'good intention' was to
have completed Tamiya's
new M18 Hellcat for the
issue you’re holding in
your hands, fully painted,
decalled and weathered with
even the figure finished and
standing alongside. Life,
however, gets in the way,
so what you see over the
following pages is as far as
I got, this month. So, what's
the kit like? The news of the
M18's imminent release was
enthusiastically received a
few weeks ago and everyone,
myself included, hoped it
would live up to the hype.
Well, it's a brand-new
Tamiya armour kit in 1:35,
so of course it does!

ALL-NEW KIT
Tamiya's kit is a 100% new
and uses no parts from other
manufacturers' kits of this
vehicle, naturally. Perhaps
the most eye-catching
highlight of the model
is the superbly rendered
'canvas' mantlet-cover in
kit plastic. It is a multi-part
component to allow crisp
detail to be formed on all
surfaces. The tracks are
link-and-length in design,
which offers excellent detail
while being easy to fit. The
open-topped turret reveals
a detailed 76mm main gun
and surrounding structures
and fittings and the driver/
radio operators' hatches
are moulded individually to
potentially allow a figure
to be fitted (not supplied).
A single, standing figure
is included and decals are
provided to build one of two
vehicles from the Italian
front, 1944.
Construction begins with
the lower hull and... Oh,
let's just get on with the
photos! l

Building and detailing the Hellcat’s turret

The M18 Hellcat's turret is an open-topped type, favoured by the designers of US tank destroyers in WW2. This is great for modellers because the entire gun
can be observed, as well as the turret basket and internal fittings. Here, the turret halves have been mated with the lower ring and the gun breech assembled

One of the most impressive parts of Tamiya's new M18 Hellcat is the mantlet's dust cover which is broken down into three segments to ensure optimal detail on
each face. The folds of the 'canvas' have been perfectly replicated in miniature and even include the seams where the panels would have been sown together

Once assembled, the effect is highly convincing and, very helpfully, the dust cover is a 'stand alone' part The internal structures are moulded in two basic

the turret, extremely close to the breech. The kit replicates this
layout, the racking 'hanging' from the forward turret roof

With the open top allowing the observer to see not just the gun and turret basket
but the floor too, some extra detailing was carried out here, using lead wire whilst
referring to references

The kit provides numerous junction boxes with connector

points, so it was a relatively easy job of drilling these out
and inserting lengths of malleable lead wire

The cabling added by the

and adds a little extra visual
interest. It's fun to do as well!

well-known online auction

resin conversion kit from the
company 'Greystone-World'
which was completely
unknown to me. This
conversion kit (German

THREE-COLOUR CAMOUFLAGE
I painted the model with
the colours, Dark Yellow
RAL 7028, Red Brown RAL
8012 and Resedagrun RAL
6011 from AK Interactive,
lightening the colours on
the field conversion a little
more. After sealing with
clear varnish, weathering
could begin. I limited myself
to depicting paint scratches
and dirt. I aged the floor of
the loading area more, as this
area was probably the most
walked-over section.
I painted the field kitchen
in Field Gray RAL7021
from AK Interactive to set a
colour accent on the loading
area. Now it was time to fill
the loading area with life. I
added a resin figure from 'The
Bodi' (German eating soldier
WWII TB-35145), which I
painted with acrylic paints.
I exchanged the head for one
that I liked better from my
scrap box. Some of the dishes
and other kitchen accessories
come from Verlinden and
Royal Model (Kitchen
accessories No.205). The wood
supply for the field kitchen
comes from our own garden
and was glued to a small pile
with wood glue. And with
that, the conversion was done!
A nice addition to my line-up
of Opel Blitz models. l

Black plastic card has many uses, all of which become
obvious when one actually needs black plastic card
but can never find any. Well, look no further than
these handy packs from Plus Model, who offer three
thicknesses in three sizes.
Also new from this producer are two sets of painted
metal advertising signs in 1:35 and they are really
rather beautiful. With a sheet for 1930s and '40s
France and the same era for Germany, the 'posters'
are formed in a similar way to the real things, paint
(or ink) applied directly to a sheet of metal, in this
case, plated brass. The designs are bright and finely
detail and will look ideal in a WW2 diorama.
Finally, we have two sheets of card from PM, printed
with a checkerboard pattern (red or black) in 1:35,
again perfect for flooring in dioramas.

finishes Eduard's
superb 1:48
MiG-21 in Cuban
Air Force colours

F
ive years ago I built
my first 1:48 MiG-21R
from Eduard in Cuban
camouflage. My friend
liked the model very much
and so I gave it to him as
a gift. I decided that my
collection should include
the MiG-21, especially in an
interesting colourful green
and blue camouflage, so I
decided to build another one.
Eduard's MiG-21R Weekend
Edition seen here comes
from 2014. The set includes
ten grey sprues, two sprues
of transparent elements,
decal sheet and colour
assembly instructions.
I enhanced the set with
an Eduard resin cockpit
(648129 MiG-21R), a pitot
tube (Master AM-48-064)
and a set of additional
stencils from Model Maker
Decals.
I always start building a
model in the same way: I
cut out all the parts from
the sprues, sand off the
sprue attachment points
and dry-fit them to check
the parts go together. If
necessary, I sand, cut and
adjust. This stage is quite
important in order to ensure
that the painted parts fit
together perfectly in the
following stages and to avoid
disappointment. Usually, the
first stage of construction is
the assembly and painting
of the cockpit, pilot's seat,
instrument panel, etc. U

V DEEPENING THE LINES

The only reservation I had Fuselage halves ready
was the depth of the panel to be joined together
lines and rivets which, in my
opinion, were too shallow.
When using a multi-layered
painting technique, there is
a risk that some details will
disappear under the layers
of paint and effects. Once
again, I decided to deepen Engine nozzle, moments before
the panel dividing lines installing it in the fuselage
and rivets, the so-called
re-scribing and re-riveting
technique using a scriber
from Tamiya fitted with
several different stylii,
needles, model saws and
templates with the shapes
of the inspection holes.
The same was true for
riveting. Each rivet has been
countersunk manually by
piercing with a stylus. This
work took quite a long time,
but for me it is essential!
Before closing up the
fuselage halves, I had
to paint the wheel bays
(Tamiya XF-11 Chrome
Silver, enhanced with
Tamiya Panel Line Accent
Color Black), engine
nozzles (AK Xtreme metal
Metalizers - Aluminium,
Burnt Metal and Jet Engine
Exhaust) and fitted and
paint the Eduard resin
cockpit. The cockpit itself is
designed to fit perfectly in
place of the standard one.

Now it's time for the
most difficult stage:
painting the camouflage.
The most important thing
is to apply the paints in
very thin transparent

all the previous marbling

I applied the camouflage

I created two basic tones

ME163 ROCKET INTERCEPTOR, REVISED EDITION

STEPHEN RANSOM, HANS-HERMANN CAMMANN
CLASSIC, CRÉCY PUBLISHING
www.crecy.co.uk

The Messerschmitt Me163 ‘Komet’ rocket-powered interceptor is an icon of WW2 military aviation
design and has been popular with scale modellers for decades. Numerous kits have been released
in various scales over the years with perhaps the 1:32 offering from Meng and more recently, a
new 1:48 model from Gaspatch being notable highlights. The Me163’s diminutive airframe is an
ideal subject for superdetailing and for this, we need references. Lots of them. And by gosh
this revised edition from Classic/Crécy delivers in spades. Within its 400+ page hard covers
we are provided with a blow-by-blow account of the Komet’s conception, development and
deployment via the use of hundreds of engrossing photographs (some in original colour),
stunning colour illustrations and technical drawings, all accompanied by a detailed and
authoritative text. The aircraft is shown inside and out, with every conceivable technical
aspect covered. So, as we always ask here, what’s in it for modellers? It is hard to
overstate how valuable this tome will be for anyone contemplating an Me163 modelling-
project: purchase with confidence. Please note, the swastika emblems have been removed
from the photographs in this book review to comply with laws in countries where Tamiya Model
Magazine is sold. The emblems are included within the book. TMMI

NUTS & BOLTS 45: SD.KFZ.10 – LEICHTER ZUGKRAFTWAGEN 1 TON AND VARIANTS
DR. NICOLAUS HETTLER, NUTS & BOLTS
www.nuts-bolts.de

The Sd.Kfz.10 must be one of the most widely used German halftrack vehicles of WW2, and most period photos
will have this vehicle or one of its derivatives somewhere in the shot. Extremely widespread, these little halftracks
appeared in every theatre of operation, and were very commonly used for pulling light guns or for the basis of
light flak transport. Only towards the end of the war, when light guns no longer packed enough punch, did the
plucky Sd.Kfz.10 start to be replaced. This book continues the format of previous volumes, in an expanded
240-page A4 softback style. The opening chapters describe how the D7 series chassis evolved, and became
the basis for the Sd.Kfz.10 and the versions which were built – most prominently the Sd.Kfz.10/4 and 10/5
versions which mounted a single 2cm. Flak gun. The organisation of units and the use of the halftracks are
described in detail. The bulk of the book is taken up with superb photos with very informative captions,
which explain much about what is shown in each picture. There follows a sequence of full 1:35 drawings
in all views, showing the main variants, and including three-quarter drawings to show the vehicle in
3D – which can help to interpret the plan drawings. After this, there are sixteen colour plates, based on
accompanying photos, showing what the halftracks would have looked like in real life. The last fifty pages
are full of pictures of preserved vehicles, showing details that modellers need, and finally there are some
photos of 1:35 models of the Sd.Kfz.10. As always, the Nuts & Bolts team have produced a winning
combination of detail and explanation, providing the modeller with all the necessary information to make
an accurate model. A great addition to the library! CLS

Ultimate Decal Setting Solution

UMP offers three different grades/strengths specifically formulated for all aspects of decalling - 'Normal' for
normal decals on regular surfaces, 'Strong' for normal decals on hard to conform surfaces with strange angles
and irregular shapes and then the 'Extra Strong' for those stubborn decals like Shunko on tough, demanding
and irregular surfaces. Ultimate Decal Setting Solution is for the most difficult and irregular surfaces to be found
on models. It completely softens the decal, allowing it to conform perfectly to surface irregularities without
distortion. Ultimate Decal Setting Solution actually makes the decal look like part of the painted surface.

Ultimate Modelling Products Weathering Pigments

These are made from the highest grade pigments available. Our pigments
are extremely versatile and can be used to create dirt & dust, rust, burnt
out effects amongst many others for AFV, cars, motorbikes, sci-fi and most
genres of modelling. They can be set in place with either a thinner, matt
or gloss varnish to seal in place. They can also be used to create a variety
of weathering effects including mud and ground effects etc. using a PVA
based glue, and bulked up using static grass to add texture.

Ultimate Polish System

This has been produced using technically advanced formulas to bring

you the absolute best four step polishing program for your models. This is
for one of each stage of the Ultimate Polish System - #1 Compound, #2
Polish, #3 Wax, #4 Shine & Ultimate Polishing Cloth - Colour may vary.
