Present simple vs present continue

Explication :

If you're talking about something you do regularly, use the present

tense, or present simple. (example: | eat...)

If you are talking about something you are currently doing, use the

present continuous tense (example: I am eating...)

Présent simple
To live:
Positive Negative Questions
I live I don’t live Do I live?
you live You don’t live Do you live?
He/she lives He/She doesn’t live Does he/she live?
we live We don’t live Do we live?
they live They don’t live Do they live?

Présent simple

The construction never changes, except for the third person singular, where you put "S" or "ES" at the end of the verb. Take, for example,

the verb to read lire :

I read

You read

he/she/it reads (note the S in the third person singular)

we read

you read

they read.
fi
There are no regular, irregular or different verbs in the present simple tense. It's always invariable, except with he/she/it (third person

singular) where you need to add an S or ES at the end of the verb.

For some verbs, an ES is added to the third person singular.

Example: He goes... She does ... He studies ... She teaches

Présent continu

The present continuous tense is used when you want to talk about an action that is taking place as you speak.

If you can translate this into French as "in the process of", then you can use the present progressive.

Example:

You are sitting in an armchair reading a book. You would say: "I am reading".

On the other hand, if you want to say that you read every day (habit), you would say "I read everyday. (present simple)

To construct the present continuous tense, we need the auxiliary BE. Then we add ING to the end of the verb we want to use.

For example, for the verb to learn apprendre, this would give :

I am learning

You are learning

He/she/it is learning

We are learning

You are learning

They are learning

You can recognise the conjugated BE auxiliary, followed by learn+ING.
