CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0. Introduction
This chapter depicts the introduction of the report, background of KCCA, mission, vision, core values,
organizational structure, objectives to the student, and the main activities carried out at KCCA.
An internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related
to student’s field study or career interest. Internship gives a student the opportunity for career
exploration and development and to bring new ideas and energy into the work place, develop
talent and potentially build a pipeline for future full-time employees. I conducted my internship
at KCCA in the Strategy Management and Business Development Department since it’s a
requirement for one to strengthen their practical ability in the field.
Field attachment is a learning process, its practical work carried out by both the staff and the
students in an organization. It’s carried out under the supervision and guidance of university
supervisor and the host supervisor. Field attachment gave a chance to me to be able to relate
different information from theory to practical.
Some of the key issues the internship targets are explained below and the report explains what I
learnt in line with the back-bone objective of the exercise
KCCA is a legal entity established by the Ugandan parliament by signing an Act in 2011
replacing the former Kampala City Council (KCC). KCCA is responsible for the operations of
the capital city of Kampala.
KCCA is divided into two wings, that is; political wing which is headed by a political leader
who’s His Worship Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and the house of councilors from each division.
And the technical wing which is headed by the Executive Director who’s Mrs. Dorothy Kisaka
KCCA has five divisions namely; Central division under Mayor Salim Uhuru, Makindye
division under Mayor Kasirye Nganda Ali, Nakawa division under Mayor Paul Mugambe,
Kawempe division under Mayor Sserunjogi Emmanuel and lastly Rubaga division under Mayor
Mberaze Mawula Zacchy

I intend to utilize all the skills and knowledge acquired to manage other resource in my professional

During my internship i was a great help to the organization since most of the tasks assigned to me were
benefit to the organization and this helped to increase their efficiency and effectiveness. This helped
them to finish their tasks on time since I could help them in different ways like
2. Taking and filing documents especially in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Authority .
4. writing reports from the project that the organization engaged in.
1.Inadequate machinery such as computers were not enough in number and trying to get a laptop was
really a challenge since personally I own one.
2.Lack of enough time to be trained in all activities as required by the university . The internship duration
was from a period of 8weeks to 6weeks yet activities to be covered remained the same.
3.Daily transport expenditure, This arranged from high transport costs, lunch costs. This was a serious
challenge as I had to put up a budget for every coin so as to stay in the field.
4.Time management.KCCA offices open at 8:00am and this calls for high level of commitment and
sacrifice in order to be at the premises on time since there is high traffic jam from Namugongo (place of
residence) to Kampala (home of residence)
5. Idle, where by at work used not to be there and sometimes my site supervisor used to be very busy
with the work hence this tend to cause boredom.
I recommend that KCCA should always provide lunch and transport costs to the internees.
CHAPTER FOUR: CONCLUSIONS,RECOMMENDATIONS AND WAY FORWARD.
4.1 Introduction
This chapter contains the management of internship at work place , comments on the internship at the
work place, suggestions for the improvement and conclusions.
I was warmly welcomed at KCCA and was entitled to be free and learn anything that was done by the
strategy management and business development.
Mr. Kyebaalabye Mudasiru was a good person to me and very supportive and encouraging during my
internship at KCCA.
The internship was managed in a such way that the work were continuously assigned to me with
defined objectives to be achieved and desirable, acceptable range of out put while keeping in mind the
time period with in which the work should be completed for example for writing minutes for the
weekly meetings.
The official reporting time was 8:00 am and departure time 5:00pm this also applied to me and did all
the official schedules like breakfast, lunch like any other staff at KCCA.
Due to the different skills I learnt during the internship period such as communication skills, computer
skills, interpersonal skills, teamwork skills, I appreciate the opportunity of the internship since its very
vital to practice all we study during the class lectures.
The performance assessment meets are held once in the week focused towards enhancing continued
achievements of the per-defined goals and objectives by analyzing the extent to which these goals and
objective are continually being achieved and instances when they are not being achieved, strategies are
suggested and discussed to align the activities with the achievement of the objectives.
The government should make internship exercise free of charge in all public institutions so as even those
who cannot manage to pay can access the better internship training.
The government should provide free computers to university students for use during their course at the
university and during the internship exercise.
The university should increase on the time allocated to students for internship which should be at least
3months or twice to enable them to learn more and be well equipped
The university should avail more learning equipment to students to enable them to be well equipped.
4.3.3 To the organization
KCCA should have a budget for interns so as to cater for some allowances such as lunch and transport
fees.
KCCA should endeavour to plan for enough space and more facilities such as chairs, tables to cater for
interns.
The students should be well equipped for internship in that they should have their own laptops to use in
case the equipment at work are less.
The students should ensure to get internship places near their homes so as to minimize transport costs.
Students should engage more in other practical skills like photocopying, printing along side their studies
since they are more capable at work.
Students should always communicate with their University supervisor in order to prevent challenges of
not being supervised by the university supervisor at the work place.
4. Conclusion
Finally, The internship training I conducted at Kampala Capital City Authority availed to me with the
tools, people, process with which I was able to practically understand the link between what I learnt in
class with in the scope of management and Administrative science specifically in areas of management
policies,Administrative activities,project management,project planning, Sales force
