 Program Description
, The Governor's School of North Carolina
is the oldest statewide summer residential
program for academically or intellectually
gifted high school students in the nation.
The program, which is open to rising seniors
only, with exceptions mode for rising juniors
in the performing/visual arts area, is located
on two campuses: Governor's School West,
established in 1 9 6 3 , at Salem College in
Winston-Salem and Governor's School East,
begun in 1978, at St. Andrews Presbyterian
College in Laurinburg. Funded annually by
the General Assembly of North Carolina, the
program is administered by the Public Schools
of North Carolina, State Board of Education, '
Department of Public Instruction through the
Exceptional Children Division. A Board of
Governors, appointed by the State Board
of Education, acts as an advisory body.
'The program offers a nori-credit curriculum '
for eight hundred students in three areas:
Area I , to achieve their full potential and
The academic section includes English,
foreign languages (Spanish and French),
mathematics, and natural and social
sciences. The performing/visual
arts section includes art, choral and
instrumental music, dance, and drama. ,

Students are given the opportunity
to move beyond their Area I specialty
to a better understariding of abstract
ideas through the study of philosophy,
epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics.

morals, thinking processes and social
and personal development through
the study of self in society.
The study of twentieth century theories

is emphasized throughout the curriculum.
The faculty and staff at both Governor's
Schools ore selected from among applicants
from public school systems, private schools,
colleges and universities, and private
businesses and organizations. Approxjmately
one hundred and twenty faculty serve
as instructors; counselors; and health care,
recreational and office personnel, in addition,
nationally recognized consultants provide
instruction to both students and faculty
throughout the summer session.

The three major purposes of the Governor's
School of North Carolina are:
: to assist academically gifted students
to be motivated to use that potential
. . for achievement of higher goals;
to stimulate local schools toward
the establishment and improvement
of programs for academically gifted
• . students by prpviding leadership
in curriculum development and
effective teaching techniques; and
to provide local schools with specially
trained teachers and special
' materials having particular application
for improvement of education for
. academically gifted students.
iTuition
L , Since the Governor's School program
is funded totally by the General Assembly
of North Carolina, no tuition or room and board
fees are charged to students. Students furnish
only their transportation costs to and from the
campuses and their spending money. '-

Student Selection Criteria
J Students who are selected to attend the
Governor's School must meet the criteria for the
academically or intellectually gifted program
as established by the North Carolina State
Board of Education. From a pool of students
recommended by high school principals, teachers
and counselors, each local school superintendent
or headmaster of a private school submits a quota
of students based on the total tenth and eleventh
grade population.
: To ensure statewide representation,.the body
of academic area students selected includes
the first [wo choices of each local school
superintendent. The remaining academic area
students are chosen by a statewide selection
committee from the pool of eligible nominees.
; In addition to meeting academic standards,
students nominated in the performing/visual
arts area must audition for selection before
a committee of qualified judges on a dote
determined by the Board of Governors.
In the student selection process, the State
is committed to the goal of selecting students
, for the Governor's School who'reflect the racial
and gender composition of North Carolina's
school-aged population.
