Unicellular Organisms

Amoeba
Amoebas have projections called pseudopods. What are they used for?

Pseudopods are cell extensions also known as false feet used for
Cytoplasm locomotion and capturing their food.

Do you think amoebas are a type of animal cell or plant cell?

Nucleus Explain your answer.

Cell Amoebas are protocists .

Bacteria
Some bacteria have ‘tails’ called flagellum. What are they used for?

Cell wall
What do you notice about the DNA of bacteria?
Cell membrane
DNA The DNA doesn’t have a nuclei bound membrane it is enclosed in.
Cytoplasm

Give an example of a bacterium.

Flagellum
Salmonella

Euglena
Euglena are not plant cells even though they contain chloroplasts.

Why do you think this is?

Eyespot

What is the function of the eyespot?

Nucleus
Flagellum
Chloroplast The eyespot is present to detect light anywhere in the
Cell membrane surroundings of the euglena so it can photsynthesize.

Like bacteria, fungi are a type of microbe.

They cannot make their own food, but eat organisms instead.

Where do you think they store their food?

They store their food in the vacuole.

Fungi cannot move, so how do they get around?

Wind, rain or insects spread spores. They eventually

land in new habitats and if conditions are right, they
start to grow and produce new hyphae. As fungi can't
move they use spores to find a new environment where
there are fewer competing organisms.
