Biology Background Research on Stem cells

Stem cells are basically cells that are able to give rise to many other cells similar to the parent
which then gives rise to other cells that are different from its original kind due to differentiation.
There are mainly 3 types of stem cells and they are: the embryonic stem cells which is a
pluripotent cell that is taken from an embryo 4-7 days old post fertilization.(Thapa, V. (2024,
March 22). All about stem cells)Then there are adult stem cells that are pluripotent cells that can
regenerate, replacing the damaged or dead tissue.(Thapa, V. (2024, March 22). All about stem
cells) then lastly we have the Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs)which are cells that are
basically cells that are created in the laboratory and are a medium of the adult stem cell and the
embryonic stem cell. (Types of stem cell | Stem cells | University of Nebraska Medical Center.

These cells are essential for replacing cells that have been previously destroyed by diseases or
any other damaged cell and providing a continuous supply of cells that is used to make tissues
and organs in both animals and plants and that is why these things are being used in the sports
department for after match recovery therapy and also used to treat burns. These stem cells are
also used in drug modeling so they take these stem cells as a dummy to try new drugs on.
These cells are also used for people to study the how organism develop from the fertilized egg
”There is great interest in stem cells because they have potential in the development of
therapies for replacing defective or damaged cells resulting from a variety of disorders and
injuries, such as Parkinson disease, heart disease, and diabetes” (Slack, J. M. (2024, March
23).
These cells have many advantages due to their unique properties. They are able to regenerate
tissues that have been damaged, retreat blood disorders such as leukemia through bone
marrow transplant and these can help to create personalized medication for patients. These
stem cells are also used in the medical industries where these cells are used to create
regenerative drugs that help to restore tissue and organs that are damaged by chronic diseases
or injuries. One of the most important features of these cells is that they can mimic a real life cell
so that we can test new drugs and diagnose diseases. X(Stem cells: What they are and what
they do. (2024, March 23). Mayo Clinic)

Though the adult cell’s destruction doesn't require them destroying the embryo. The use of
embryonic stem cells, which involves the creation and destruction of embryos raises a huge
ethical concern. There are also concerns about the potential for embryonic stem cells to develop
into tumors and the limited capacity of cord blood stem cells and adult stem cells to differentiate
into different cell types.(Ben‐David, U., & Benvenisty, N. (2011). The tumorigenicity of human
embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells.) The downstream research and potential misuse
of iPSCs for therapeutic purposes remain areas of concern (Lo & Parham, 2009)
