Farewell to barn and stack[1] and tree, (a)


Farewell to Severn[2] shore. (b)
Terence, look your last at me, (a)
For I come home no more. (b)

The sun burns on the half-mown hill, (c)


By now the blood is dried; (d)
And Maurice amongst the hay lies still (c)
And my knife is in his side. (d)

My mother thinks us long away;

She had two sons at rising day,


To-
-bye;

My bloody hands and I.

I wish you strength to bring you pride,


And a love to keep you clean,
And I wish you luck, come Lammastide[3],
At racing on the green.

Long for me the rick[4] will wait,


And long will wait the fold,
And long will stand the empty plate,
Poetic Techniques

Ballad
A simple narrative poem which is in short stanzas, usually four lines.

Narrative Style -First Person Narration


Use of words my,me

Elegy
The death of Maurice is a central incident here. The romance ends in catastrophe.

Sorrow
The whole poem makes the readers feel sorrow towards the narrator and the plot.
Flashback
The narrator visits his past throughout the poem.
now the blood is

Flashforward
The narrator visits his future.
Eg. long will stand the empty plate, And dinner will be cold.

Empathy and Sympathy

Repetition
Eg. to the barn and stack and

Irony
Two situations contrasting from each other.
Eg. Killing his own brother for the sake of his love. But presently he has to leave town
therefore he has lost his love forever.
