TEXTO PARA EXAMEN FINAL

Nurses have different roles and positions in different parts of the world. In Ontario,
Canada, there are three classes of positions that nurses can fill. The difference between them
depends on the levels of education, responsibilities they have and the types of patients they
care for. People who want to follow nursing as a career should read this text carefully to
decide for one of the three.
The first type of nurses is Registered Nurses (RNs). From the year 2005, all Ontario RNs
study four years at university to get the degree. After the fourth year, they receive a degree in
Bachelor of Nursing. RN’s education is more comprehensive, they have deeper knowledge
about health and illnesses and, consequently, they care for patients with more complex needs
in unpredictable situations.
The second type of nursing position is Nurse Practitioners (NPs). An NP is an RN with
advanced university education. Usually, they study an extra year to specialize in one area. This
is actually a difference from other types of nurses. Registered Practical Nurses, for example, do
not need the extra year to graduate but they are not able to perform special tasks like Nurse
Practitioners. NPs usually provide personalized health care to patients with special needs.
The last position is Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs). All RPNs in Ontario take a
program of two years in college. RPN’s education is less comprehensive and more focused so
they are prepared to deal with patients with less complex needs, and patients in stable and
predictable conditions.
There is not only one nursing school in Canada. So, if you want to become a nurse
follow these tips:
 Decide what type of tasks you prefer to do and what tasks you won’t
do even when for the money. Make sure you do not think of health as business.
 Interview nurses at a local hospital to learn more about their jobs.
 Find a university where you can study to become the type of nurse
that you want to be.
The three types of nurses are different because they care for patients with
different needs. But no one has more importance than the other because they are
necessary to help the health system work properly and to make sure all patients (men,
women, children and the elderly) receive proper care.
