My favorite reference for food editing

Summary:
The article talks about the author's experience using
the book “The Deluxe Food Lover’s Companion’’ as a
reference guide for terms and concepts related to food
and cooking. The author points out that the book helped
her a lot in understanding the difference between some
terms such as broth and stock, where both are the liquid
that is the result of cooking fish, meat, or vegetables in
water. Stock includes other seasoning ingredients, and
broth does not. The article also provides an overview of
the writer’s role as an editor for Costco Wholesale
Company and her responsibilities in proofreading the
company’s marketing communications. The article also
indicates that “The Deluxe Food Lover’s Companion’’ is
considered a valuable resource for those interested in
food and cooking, as well as for people who work in the
field of linguistic editing and publishing, as it provides
accurate and comprehensive information about culinary
concepts, ingredients, and terminology related to food.
The author indicates that the book contains more than
6,700 entries and is distinguished by its alphabetical
organization, with additional sections dealing with Topics
such as cuts of meat, pasta glossary, and a guide to British
and American food terms.

Response:
As someone who does not have much experience in
the field of cooking, I found the article very useful. After
reading it, I realized the importance of having a reliable
reference for food and cooking terminology, especially
when dealing with texts related to food. The book seems
to have helped the author in understanding the subtle
differences between terms and concepts, and this
encourages me to use similar references to edit food texts
in my future as an editor.

Interview with an editor: Joanie

Eppinga
Summary:
The article includes an interview with Joanie Eppinga,
an editor with more than 24 years of experience who
currently works at Eagle Eye Editing & Writing Company.
Joanie shares insights into her journey as an editor, from
her interest as a child in correcting punctuation marks on
billboards, to transitioning from being a psychotherapist to
the editorial field, to achieving flexibility in working from
home and spending time with her children. As a public
editor, Joanie enjoys the variety of her work, which keeps
her alert and engaged. She describes her typical workday
as flexible, often working late at night or early in the
morning as an empty-nester mom. Joanie's favorite aspect
of being an editor is the opportunity to read diverse and
interesting subjects that she may not have previously
encountered. One of the challenges she faces as a
freelance editor is managing fluctuations in workload,
which she likens to the unpredictable nature of working as
a waitress. During recessionary periods, she uses the time
to succeed in other tasks. Some of Joanie’s tips for aspiring
editors: Formal training can be helpful, but self-discipline,
attention to detail, and knowledge of style guides are also
essential to success in the field. She also explained the
importance of interest in language and editing from an
early age, which justifies the importance of passion and
interest in achieving success in a specific field.
Response:
I liked the article in general and found Joanie's tips
really useful and inspiring, especially for new editors. I
benefited a lot from her experiences and guidance on how
to organize time and develop skills, especially when she
mentioned the editor’s ability to explore different topics
and gain extensive knowledge in different fields. However,
I did not like the idea of freelancing very much, as
fluctuations in work and the balance of personal and
professional life can be a great challenge for me, as I
prefer stability and balance between work and personal
life. I do not want to feel all day that there is work waiting
for me, but I have been putting it off since the morning.
However, I appreciate the advice and information she
provided and consider it useful for my future success.

The secret to great proofreading

Summary:
This article highlights the importance of careful scrutiny
of texts to maintain the credibility and integrity of the
written content. It highlights the role of editors in
protecting the work from errors that may affect its quality,
which makes them heroes who do not receive sufficient
attention in the publishing process. The text stresses that
the key to achieving scrutiny in reviewing materials with a
critical eye while assuming that all content contains errors
until proven otherwise. This approach helps discover
errors that may have been previously overlooked. The text
also suggests paying attention to several common errors
that editors should be careful about, such as broken links,
inconsistent instructions, or discrepancies in style or
formatting. In the end, proofreading aims to ensure that
the content reaches its audience free of errors, which
benefits both the writer in conveying his message
effectively and the editor in obtaining appreciation for his
persistent efforts.

Response:
I found the information provided about the difference
between a proofreader and an editor very useful. I liked
how the article gave the appropriate value to the
proofreader and editor as an important part of the
published work, as said here “One might say they are the
unsung heroes of the publishing process”.
