THE FIRST

SETTLEMENTS
Nomads to City-States

1
The First Settlements - From Nomadic to Sedentary
The earliest humans were nomadic
people. That means that they moved
from one place to another looking for
food/water.

They soon found out that it was best to

stay next to sources of freshwater, like
rivers, that gave them water for drinking
and gave them food (fishing, animals,
edible plants.)

Nomadic: A group of people that travels a lot.

Edible: Something that you can eat.

settle nexto these rivers. Creating the
first settlements.

Settlements are small towns.

To settle means to stay in one place to

live.

As settlements grew, they attracted

more people and became larger.
Eventually becoming City-States.

The First Settlements - The Early City-States
A City-State is a city that has a
government and controls an area
around it.

The earliest City-States were

independent from each other.

These early cities built the first walls in

order to protect themselves from
nomadic raiders.
To Raid: To attack and steal from someone else.
Farmland was usually outside of the city
and as the city grew, new walls were 6
built to protect it.

The Early City States - Creating Culture
As the City-State survived for many years,
they started developing a way of doing
things. We call this Culture.

Culture: A way a group of people act and

what they believe.

There are many things that makeup a

culture (Traditions, Art, Language,
Religion,etc.)
To Develop: To create and/or to invent after an
amount of time. Differences in culture and over resources

share a similar culture. They might share
the language, religion and/or many other
ways of acting.

We are a part of the Western Civilization

meaning that we share culture with
countries like: USA, France, Brazil, and
many others.

Studying history teaches us where we came from Our type of Civilization started in Greece,
