CRYOGENIC TEST PROCEDURE
O/REF: SHEET: OF
PRO-827H
N/REF: HOJA: 2 DE 7

1.- PURPOSE
This procedure establishes the guidelines to be followed in the performance of
cryogenic tests from 0º C down to –196º C on valves manufactured by POYAM Valves
which require these tests.
2.- SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to gate, globe and swing-check valves with both soft and
metal seats, and to ball valves with soft seats, which have been manufactured for
cryogenic operation as specified in the customer order.
3.- STANDARD APPLICABLE
This procedure is based on the latest edition of the BS 6364 standard.
4.- GENERAL
4.1. Test rig assembly
The test rig assembly must be such that the valve bodies are free of
compression, as indicated in drawing nº 06251.
Both valve ends are connected to blind flanges, fitted with the appropriate vents
for testing.
The test rig assembly is checked for helium leakages by means of the mass
spectrometer fitted with a sniffer probe.
All measuring equipment is properly calibrated and has its respective calibration
certificate, in accordance with recognized national standards and/or it can be
easily checked by means of gauges. When there is no traceability to national
standards the calibration criteria used must be documented.
4.2. Test medium
The test medium is helium. The coolant for the test to –196º C is liquid nitrogen
and for the test to –46º C is alcohol + liquid nitrogen.
4.3. Test times
The cryogenic tests must be performed for a minimum of 5 minutes.
The ambient temperature test must be performed for a minimum of 2 minutes.

4.4. Test temperatures

The cryogenic test temperatures depend on the material of the valve under test.
Stainless steel valves are tested to –196º C, and at a minimum of –185º C.
Impact tested carbon steel valves are tested to –46º C. Other non-cryogenic tests
which are required in this procedure are performed at ambient temperature.
During the cryogenic tests, the temperature at the following points is monitored:
− Valve body.
− Stuffing box area.
− Closure member (interior).
− Test medium. (2)
4.5. Test pressure
Test pressure is in compliance with the latest edition of BS 6364.

4.6. Valve Protection

No protection whatsoever is applied to the valve surface until the tests indicated
in this procedure have been satisfactorily carried out. If for any reason the
interior protective coating needs removing, the valve is disassembled and the
components are cleaned and degreased with trichlorethylene.
4.7. Valve operation
Manual valves are operated without levers. The maximum force applied to the
handwheel to operate the valve during both the low temperature and the ambient
temperature test must not exceed 500N.
4.8. Cooling down
The valve is placed in the test tank until the liquid nitrogen covers the pipe base
of the cover extension.
Throughout the cooling operation, a purge of helium gas at approximately 1 bar
is maintained, to prevent moisture being formed inside the valve. The valve is
kept half-open for metal seats and fully-open for soft seats.
In case of ball valves, in order to ensure that the cooling down is regular, liquid
nitrogen is poured inside, until both the interior and exterior of the valve
approach the test temperature. The valve is then taken out of the test tank, the
liquid nitrogen rapidly removed from inside and the valve replaced in the test
tank. The procedure set out in the previous paragraph is then followed.
When the valve body and closure have reached the test temperature, the helium
flow is stopped and the valve is kept fully open for at least 15 minutes. Once the
temperature has stabilized, the cryogenic tests can be performed.
The difference in temperature between the valve body and closure must not
exceed 5%.

4.9. Allowable leakages.

The maximum allowable leakage rates in ml/min. per inch bore diameter (DN)
for the pneumatic seat test at low temperature are in compliance with the latest
edition of BS 6364.

4.10. Numbers tested

The valves tested are chosen randomly from all the valves manufactured, taking
into account the rating, type and size of the valve. 5% of each batch is tested, at
least one of each type.
4.11. Inspection coverage
Tests other than those indicated in this procedure are only performed if specified
in the order, and to the extent established therein.
5.- TEST PROCEDURE(1)
5.1. Ambient temperature tests
Valves, which are to undergo cryogenic tests, are previously tested with helium
at the maximum test pressure for at least 30 minutes. No leakages are permitted.
5.2. Low temperature tests
5.2.1. Pneumatic seat test
In the case of two-way valves, the pneumatic test is performed in both
directions. Valves with a preferential pressure side (appropriately
indicated on the body) are tested only in that direction.
The valve under test is gradually pressurized to the test pressure
indicated in section 4.5., whilst in the fully open position.
Seat leakages are collected and measured at every pressure step-up. At
maximum test pressure the valve is opened and closed five times and a
record made of both the initial and final opening and closing forces.
Permissible leakages must be not exceed those indicated in section 4.9.

5.2.2. Pneumatic shell test

The valve under test is kept pressurized at the pressure indicated in
section 5.2.1., whilst in the partially open position. It is then removed
from the test tank, and before ice forms on the surface it is checked for
leakage to the exterior by means of the mass spectrometer sniffer probe.
The stuffing-box area, body-bonnet gasket and pressure-retaining parts
are thoroughly checked for leakages.
No leaks are permitted. Zero leaks mean less than 5x10-4 ml/sec as
detected by the mass spectrometer. (1)
5.3. Ambient temperature tests
Once the valve has returned to ambient temperature and depending on the type
of valve under test, hydrostatic and pneumatic test are followed according to the
applicable procedure.
6.- TEST REPORT
The test results, including temperatures, pressures, times, opening and closing forces
and leakage rates, are recorded in DOC-827H, and subsequently submitted to the
Purchaser’s Inspector or his Representative for approval.
7.- REJECTS
If the valve does not pass any of the required tests, it is rejected, along with the rest of
the valves in the batch from which it was selected.
Once the valve has been disassembled, if necessary, and the defects, which caused the
rejection, have been corrected, the valve is retested. The number of valves tested is
doubled, and if any of these valves should be rejected, the whole batch is rejected.
