High Wind and Sandstorm

High Winds expected 16 – 20 May 2024

Be advised that weather forecast for the next couple of days predict High Wind Speed and Sandstorm (Poor
visibility).
Visibility will be poor due to dusty conditions, so please instruct employees to utilize vehicle lights while driving
and reduce their driving speed.
NOTE: High visibility traffic vests are required to be worn at all times while on the project.
As per Lusail policy, crane operations shall be halted at sustained wind speeds of 25 knots / 46.3 km per hour, as
measured at the top of the crane mast, boom, or jib; unless manufacturer’s guidelines recommended crane
stoppage at lower wind speeds. The most stringent standard shall apply.
Care must be taken to secure materials and ensure controls are in place during all scaffold/working at height
activities.
Personnel should be notified that high winds could increase the potential for a fire resulting from improper
disposal of cigarettes. Please remind personnel of their designated smoking areas, the location of disposal
methods/containers, and the ease with which high winds can carry cigarettes to combustible materials igniting
fires.
Hot Works – Should it be necessary to carry out any Hot Works during periods of excessive wind, conduct an in-
depth fire specific risk assessment and ensure to increase the perimeter of watch and protection/preventative

measure to all downwind areas from the location of the hot. Fire Watch to ensure that a full check of the
surrounding area is carried out and watcher to remain in place for at least 30 mins after completion of hot work.
In addition to the above information, please also consider the following during this period of high wind.

• Secure all traffic barriers with water or sand.


• Higher risk for flying objects especially from high rise buildings and material storage areas.
• Winds may increase risk of fall for work at height activities.
• Other equipment (e.g., suspended scaffolding; truck mounted concrete pump) may also be affected by
the winds and caution is advised.
• Building materials may fall and street signs, advertisement boards may come loose during strong winds,
keep distance from such possibilities.
• Use handrails where available.
• Stand clear of the roadways as strong gusts may cause you to stumble on the path of an overcoming
vehicle.
• Avoid working in unsecured places and especially at heights.
WHEN DRIVING:
▪ Keep both hands on the steering wheel.
▪ Watch for objects blowing across the roadway.
▪ Keep a safe distance from the cars in adjacent lanes as strong wind causes other vehicle to travel
outside their lanes.
▪ If winds are severe enough to prevent calamities, carefully pull off the road and stop until the wind
subsides!
