Chapter 2 - Technical description.
2.1 General arrangement.
The equipment consist of:
- prôpeller hub with blades
- shafting
- pitch servo unit
- hydraulic system
- control system
The propeller hub contains a hydraulic cylinder-yoke.wh.ich actuates
on the blades by means of a pin-slot mechanism. A followup valve
built on the pitch servo unit feeds the cylinder-yoke through pipes
in the hollow shafting. This follow-up valve is mechanically linked
to a servo cylinder, which is controlled by the refvte contrl
system.

2.2 Propeller hub and blades.


The hub body is cast in one piece and has large blade bearing col-
-
lars designd to withstand the slot-pin mechanism loading under the
moderate bearing surface pressure.
The blades are connected with the blades carriers by means of bolts.
Movement of blades and blade carriers is effectuated by the axially
moving cylinder-yoke through a slot-pin mechanism. The slot is lo-
cated in the blade carrier whilst the pins are integral with the
cylinder-yoke and are provided with high tensile strength bronze
sliding blocks.
The cylinder-yoke moves axiaily over t pistors. The forward pis-
ton forms an integral part with the tailshaft, the aft piston is
integral with the hub body cover.
When high pressure oil is pumped to the forward side of'the cylin-
der-yoke, this yoke moves astern resulting in blade rot ion with
increasing pitch. Meehanite piston rings act as seal between cylin-
der and both pistons.
Based on the characteristics of the pitch actuating torque, low
pressure oil can be pumped to the aft side of the cylinder-yoke,
resulting in the pitch to move astern.
it should be mentioned that the high-pressure compartment forward
of the cylinder-yoke is entirely surrounded by low-pressure hy-
draulic oil and hub lubrication oil.
The emergency piston normally is located in its extreme ahead po-
sit ion against the tailsbaft. This piston can be pumped-astern,
resulting in astern moUon of the cylinder-yoke, suchthat pitch

can be adjusted in a suitable ahead position. A separate pipe-con-


nsction has been provided. The blade foot seals are synthetic
rubber endless cord 0-rings which are mounted under the blade feet.
The 0-rings are sized such that. with retention of the correct com-
pression rate required for the sealing action, the tolerance in the
blade bearing can be absorbed. The hub oil system is connected to
theoll distribution block via the hollow shaft bore. This channel
is connected with the oil tank via the oil distribution block.

2.3 Shaftin.
The hub is connected tö the taiishaft flange with bolts and dowels,
which 'are protected with a protection cover fitted with sealing
rings and filled with mineral grease. Connection of tailshaft to
the Ro'oil distribution unit, will be carried oift with a SKF-sleeve.
type coupling. The shafts will be reinforced locally in way of the
SKF-sl..ve ty internal counter-shrunk bushes;
The shafting will be hollow bored to contain the hydraulic oil
supply and return piping insert. The shafting-bore contains t

co-axial pipes.
The inner pipe connects thec'ylinderyoke with the feed-back me-
chanism in the slotted part of the servoshaft. The pipe transmits
the bladé position mechanically and'conveys low-pressure oil to
the aft side of the cylinder-yoke for astern.blede adjustment. The
outer pipe is fixated in the shaft-bore and conveys high-pressure
oil to maintain blade position or adjust' pitch ahead. A third,chan-

nel is formed by the space between the outer pipe and the propeller
shaft. This channel connects the hub with the oil tank and contains
hydraulic oil for hub lubrication.
This channel can be also used for transport of hydraulic oil for
actuation of the emergency piston,.
The hub oil connection Is provided with a valve in the flange of
the propeller shaft, which closes automatically in case the emer-
gency system is pressuriz.d.'

2.1i Pitch servo unit Ro-type.


The servo-unit principally consists of: servo-shaft, oil distri-
bution block and valve block. The servo-shaft has 'been slotted and
provided with a fixed flange at the forward end.

The oil distribution block is provided with high pressure clearance
seals and used to pump hydraulic oil in the rotating shaft. This
part of the block is compensated by means of piston rings at the
outside of the block, which means that the clearance between
shaft and, scalings aré small during transfer of high-pressure oil
and increase as soon as the system is stationary. The following
components are arranged in the valve block: non-return valve1
spool valve, relief valve and back pressure valve. Furthermore,
components required for alarming and monitoring, such as pressure
gauges for Pugh pressure and back pressure, pressure switches1 a
temperature gauge is built in.
The non-return valve prevents undesired pitch run-away in case of
hydraulic power failure and during transfer of main to stand-by
hydraulic system. Back pressure is used for switch-over from main
to stand-by hydraulic system.
High pressure oil for pitch adjustment is aitted to'the shaft
through the spool valve,' return oil flows through the valve to
the tank. Prt of the back pressure return oil is continuously
available to be supplied through a micronic filter to a separite
servo-system, which serves to actuate a servo-cylinder controlling
the control spool valve and which Is directed with a pneumatic con-
trolled valve. During control system failure, the central spool
valve can be manually operated.
The servo-unit further contains, the mechanically operating feed-
back mechanism, which is connected with the spool valve and the
pitch position transmitter.
Low pressure seals are fitted to forward and aft side of the unit.
Rotation of the unit with the shaft as well as axial movement is
prevented by means of a torque-stay.

2.5 Hydraulic system.


The hydraulic system consists of one electric driven mainptsnp and
one electric driven stand-by pump. The pumps are rett'.pumps, Type

lJ1.O.'and supply oil from the tank through a suction filter, via a
non-return valve and a high pressurefilter to the servo-unit. The
central spool valve in the servo-unit has negative lap. This keeps
the pressure level in the System to the minimum level required for
pitch holding.
An oil cooler is contained In the general return line to the tank.
For remote control purposes, a control. cylinder Is built into the
servo-unit, which Is actuated by back pressure from thé hydraulic

system and governed by a pneumatic controlled valve. The control


cylinder is adapted. to fitting of position transmitters, which are
required to obtain a stable control system.

Normal control,.
When the required pitch angle is larger than the actual pitch angle
while the control handle is brought into this new position, then
the pneumatic controlled valve directs the servo-cylinder to open
the spool valve for admittance of high-pressure hydraulic oil the

channel between the F0-axial pipes. This oil will cause the cylin-
der-yoke in the hub to move astern, adjusting the blades to a lar-
ger pitch a'hgle. The moving oil pipe, qpnected to the cylinder-
yoke, moves the feedback rod astern, resulting in a gradual clo-
sing of the spool valve until the required pitch ingle has been ob-
tained. As long as the system is stat+onary, a pressure balance
in the hydraulic cylinder is required, depending on the hydrody-
namic forces acting on the propeller blades. This pressure balance
between forward and aft side of the cyl inder-yoke is maintained
automatically by the spool valve which is provided with underlap,
at minimum level required.

2.6 Emerency control.


The main pressure non-return valve in the valve-block avoids un-
desired sudden pitch changes astern in case of hydraulic per
failure.
in this case the pitch can be dJusted to and locked into a
suitable ahead position by means of the emergency-cylinder.
This requires the shaft to be stopped, such that hydraulic oil
can be pumped into the special channel wi.th a handpump to .the
forward side of the emergency-cylinder. Locking of the pitch
occurs automatically, since the entrance gate of the channel at
the servo-unit is provided with selfclo,ing coupling half.

Chapter 3- Operating Instructions.


3.1 First starting afterinstallation or after major repairs
inspect Inside of tank on cleanliness before filling.
Check whether shut-off valves or open or closed, as they
should be.
Check4ll level in tank. Check again when oil has been pumped
through the system.
Flush hydraulic system with coupled pressure and return line.
hoses. Check filter regularly during flushing. If necessary,
replace pressure filter and wash out suction filter. The
flushing has to continue until filters remain clean.
Prime the hydraulic pumps one by one. Check the direction of
rotation. See also 'Service instructions" of IMO
Check working of cooler (waterfesd open).
if the system has been, flushed, the pressure filter elements
must be replaced and the suction filter element washed out.
Connect aaIn pressure and return line hoses to the valve
block on the oil distribution unit.

The corrct functioning of all components must now be checked


with stopped shaft.
- Take the necessary precautions to prevent that t.he propul
sion ntor is switched on.
- Set the selector switch' in the engineroan to "stand-by" and
check the correct functioning of the starting interlocks:
hydraulic pressure, zero pitch, etc.
- Check whether all pitch indicators and the manual control
handle point to zero.

The safety valves must now be checked


- Screw safety valve on valve block do to obtain a relief
pressure higher than TL.1kg/cin2.
- Unlock manul control handle.
- Adjust pltch to maximum ahead (or astern) by manually
operating (control handle) and check whether safety valve
in pressure line of running main pump (I) opens at IC'i(kg/cin2)

- Switch out pump I. (alarm) Pump Ii will be switched on.


Make Pump ii main pump and pump t stand-by. pump to stop
the alarm.
- Adjust pitch to maximum astern (or ahead) by manually
operating (control handle) and check whether safety valve
in pressure line of running'pump (ii) opens at lof kg/cm2.
- Screw safety valve on valve block up to a pressure slightly
higher than the operating pressure
The automatic switch over systme of the pumps must now be
checked.
Pump II is still main pump and pump t stand-by.
The stationary pressure in the syst is about3fkg/crn2.
- Switch out main pump (ii) manually. The pressure will drop
below 4i kg/cm2.
- Check whether pump I is switched on when the pressure passes
the setting point of the switchover pressure switch
labout 2 kg/cm2). Check alarm.
- Make pump 1 main pump and piaip Ii stand-by pump. The alarm
fluit stop now.

- Repeat checks on pump I. Switch out pump I. Alarm.


Pump I I s iw I t ched on. Make pump I I ma i n pump and pump I

stand-by pump. Alarm stops.


- Switch Out both pumps manually. The pressure will drop below
th. setting point of the low pressure microswltch
(about 3 kg/cm2). Check that alarm is actuated.
- Switch pumps on again to normal'service. Pump I Is min pump,
pump ii stand-by.
Continue to check the functioning of thecontrol components.
- Unclock manual control handle and make complete pitch
adjustment. Lock handle again.
- Set selector switch in engineroom to "bridge"
- Push the "push-button" for handle control.
- Make complet. pitch adjustment with handle.
- Set main switch in engineroom to "engineroom on service'
- Make complet. pitch adjustment with pushbutton
- Set selectorswitcPi in engineroor to "ofr'

3.2 Normal start ing.


- .Check oil level in tank (even though level alarms are used).
- Disconnect propulsion motor.
- Set selectorswitch in engineroom to "stand-by'
- Check starting interlocks.
- Check whether pitch indications and manual control handle
point to zero.
- Check rking of cooler (wsterfeed open)
- Set selectro switch in engineroan to bridge and push the
push-button for handle control.
- Check good rking of pump switch over system.
- Make complete pitch adjustment with control handle.
- Set selector switch in engineroan to "engineroom on service"
and make complete pitch adjustment with control handle.
- Set selector switch in enginerocri to "off"
- Connect propulsion motor again.
- Set selector switch in engineroom to"stand-by"and proceed
with the starting procedure.

3.3 Stopping.
After setting the selector switch in the .nginerooin "off" no
special measures have to be taken. All valves can remain in
the position they had during normal service.

3.4 Emergency pitch setting.


When, for certain reasons, the hydraulic system is out of
operation, the pitch can be adjusted to and locked into the
ahead position by means of the emergency piston, referêd to
in per. 2.2.
To do this, proceed as follow, (see fig. 5):
- Stop the shaft. To prevent oil to flow out unnecessarily,
plug 5.22 should be in top position.
- Remove plug and fit all items shom in detail A.
- Connect a selflocking push-pull coupling.
- Connect the air-operated Alemite pump, supplied for the
SKF coupling.
- Pump oil into the shaft bore until the propeller pitch
Is in the maximum ahead position.
- Disconnect the coupling halves. One half should remain on
the shaft to lock the pitch position.

Important.
To restore to normal operation, plug (s.22) must igain be
fitted. The emergency piston will be pushed bck Into its
normal position when the cylinder-yoke moves forward.

Chapter 4 - instructions for assemb) and dismantlina.

4.1 Preface. -

In the following some special instructions are given for assem-


bi Ing and dismantling. Repair should only be executed by
experienced craftsmen. We advise you to ask for a specialist
mechanic of our technical service department to assist in
major repairs, surveys, etc.

Receipt of equipment.
On receipt of the goods these should be checd. If during
transport parts have been damaged or are missing, this should
be reported invvdiately.

4.2 Instruction for the propeller shaft

The hollow bored shaft will be delivered with the co-axial pipes.
The blades can be moved to 3°. ahead.positl:on with help of a hand-
pump, connected to the auxiliary pitch adjustinn arrannement shown
on fig. 17..
In the 3°. ahead position the inner.pipe.is projectinq about 95 mm
out of the shaft.

Caution

Keep the inside of the shaft scrupulously clean. Check pipe ends,
especially 0-ring grooves, and 0-ring for damane.

4.3 Mounting instruction of servo-unit

it is assumed, that the SKF sleeve coupling has been moved over
the propeller shaft.
- Place propeller in 3 ahead position.
- The servo units have been transported as sh.ion on fig. 7.
Remove part 7.4 and 7.3. Loosen part 7.6, but do not remove
it yet, it can be used later to pull out the rod out of thé shaft.
- Pull out feedback pipe 5.41 so far, that the tvio flats 50 A/FL
on pipe end are out of the shaft. Remove part 7.6.
- Put the unit in line with the propeller shaft, leaving a space
of 190 mm between the shaft ends (see pane 16).
- Screw feedback pipe 5.41 into pipe in propeller shaft (see pane 16)..
The distance of 190 mm between the shaft ends is too large to
connect the rods in one step, as the feedback rod must not come
out further out of the servo shaft than indicated by measure 35 rim
in fig. C, page 16. While connecting the rods, the distance between
the shaft ends must gradually be decreased to 95 mm.
- Lock the two pipes with set screw 2.10.
- Move unit rectilinearly aft against screw shaft. In view of the
calibrated pitch position it is important that the shaft ends touch.
- Put servo shaft in line with shafting and support unit. Fit SKF
coupling (see para 4.5).
- Fit torque stay 5.26. S

- Remove bracket 7.5 and 7.11.

4.4 Dismantling instruction of servo unit.

- Place propeller in 3. ahead position.


Close valve 8.1 on oil tank.
- Drain oil out of oil distribution unit by removinn drain pluci
5.27. Quantity of oil about 150 itr.
- Disconnect hoses and electrical cables.
- Fit lifting and r'etaininq brackets 7.5 and 7.11 and remove
torque stay 5.26.
- Support unit completely, also using lifting tackle.
Dismantle SKF coupling. Move coupling ver propeller shaft.
- Move unit rectilinearly forward 95 mm, making assesibe the
feedback rod coüplinq (fig. C, aqe 16). If the outer pipe in
the propeller shaft has been drawn out, it can easily be pushed
back. Note, that some 600 ltr. oil wi-il flow out of the shaft
bore and shaft piping system.
- Loosen set screw 2.10 on pipe coupling (Allen head wrench 5 mm)
and unscrew the inner pipes (spanners 50 arid75 A/FL).
The distance of 95 mm between the shaft ends is too small to
disconnect the pipes in one step. The distance must aradually
be increased while unscrewing the rods (see pane 16).
- The unit has now been completely disconnected.

4.5.. Mounting and dismounting of the SKF sleeve coupi ina.


In addition to the prescribed procedures In the SKF mounting
and dismounting instructions of coupling OK 440HB, the
following must be considered:
The shaft ends, over which the cóupl Ing Is to be pushed for
mounting or disnuntIng, must be thoroughly cleaned and
oiled with.the Injection oil.
When the coupling must be turned, for instance to bring the
vent hole In top position, this can be accomplished by in-
jectinä oil in the.outer sleeve with the t SKF pumps.
When the oil film Is spread out, the outer sleevecan easily
be rotated around the. Jnner sleeve.
As the shafts are hollow-bored, the prescribed -value for
the respective couplings must be maintained; the c-values
wIll then be reduced.

4.6 Hydraulic system

Most of the hydraulic components are built in units (fig. 5 -


dotted lines). These units must be connected as shown on the
hydraulic diagram.
The hydraulic lines must be mounted in such a manner, that no
stresses are transmitter to the sub-assemblies or components
which they link. Moreover, they mst be adequately supported
in order to prevent the transmission.of vibration. Flexible
hoses are used.to connect the oil distribution unit.
The pipework supplied and fitted by the installer must comply
with the requirements of the classification society.
Pipes which have been heated from any reason (welding or
making of bends) must be stress releived and subsequently be
immersed in an acid solution (acid pickled) and afterwards
thoroughly rinsed and oiled.
Before operating the hydraulic system, all feed lines should.
be flushed through. During this operation every precaution
must be taken to prevent foreign matterentering pumps or
other components.

For the propulsion propellers wenpropose:

'L7 Replacing a propeller blade (see fig. 20)

- Bring blade in the position shown on fig. 20 and fit blade


mounting tool (fig. 21).
- Arrange sufficient hoisting facilities.
- Remove locking strips on blade hold-down bolts.
- Loosen bolts with socket wrench and ring spanner
(see list of special tools).
- Take blade off the hub.
- Fit new blade.
- Tighten bolts to required torque as mentioned on hub drawing.
- Lock bolts by welding locking strips on bolts heads. Use AVESTA P5
electrode.
- Some oil might have been spilled during the operation.
- Turn vent hole in propeller to the top position and supply oil.

Chapter 5- Maintenance instructions.


Listed below are the normal maintenance tasks after the installation
has been put into service.
-S,,
Propeller.
- External check of blades, hub, lockings of blade bolts and all
other external bolts each time during drydocking.
- if necessary, removal of cavitation pits on blades and hUb, each
time during drydocking.
- inspectionof zinc anodes and replacment If necessary each time
during drydocking.
- Drain hub oil o check whether water has leaked intp the hub,
each'time during drydocking.
- Renewal of blade foot sealevery 4 years.

Oil distribution block'with valve block and control unit,.


- Check of all critical bolt connections and rod clearances in
bearings, each year.

Hydraulic system.
- Check of' a!l flexible hoses, pipe. and flange connections regularly.
- Replacement or cleaning of filter cartridges after thi first 1.00
hours of operation, after each oil renewal afld further when Indica-
ted on the dirt Indicator of the filter.
- Renewal of hydraulic oil and cleaning of tank each one or t
years depending on the n.aiber of operating hours.
Meanwhile regular testing of oil samples.
- Testing of safety valve; backpressure valve and pressure switch
settings, each year.
- Check the oil level' in the tank regularly.
- Test pump transfer to stand-by system and stand-by pump itself
regularly.

Control system.
- For the control system there are only regular function checks
required, see normal starting, para 3.2.

General.
We reconinend to renew all rubber seals each time after disassembly.
