FACILITATORS’ GUIDE
COMPONENT A
LEARNING AREA MATHEMATICS 4004

LEVEL FORM 4 CALA A

CALA TYPE : Practical Activity plus Pen and Paper
SYLLABUS TOPIC : Statistics
SYLLABUS SUBTOPIC: Measures of Central tendency
CALA TITLE : Calculating the mean, mode and median from given data
DURATION : Two weeks

COMPETENCE SKILLS :
 Data collection
 Data classification
 Data presentation
 Measures of central tendency

DIMENSIONS:
 Collecting data
 Classifying data
 Presenting data
 Applying measures of central tendency
 Communicating mathematical information related to everyday life

CALA BACKGROUND

It has been observed that many people consider mathematics concepts to be abstract and fail to see
their applicability in everyday life situations particularly measures of central tendency, hence the
need to carry out the practical so that learners appreciate the importance of mathematics in
everyday life situations. You are therefore required to calculate the mean, mode and median from
given data.

CALA DESCRIPTION

You are required to:

 Collect data on shoe sizes of 30 learners of your own choice
 Show raw data as collected
 Present data on a frequency table
 Present data on a pie chart
 Calculate the mean of your data
 Calculate the median of your data
 Calculate the mode of your data

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED The facilitator will assess:

 Evidence of data collected
 Construction of a frequency table
 Correctly calculated angles on pie chart
 Correctly measured angles on pie chart
 Neatly drawn pie chart
 Correct calculation of measures of central tendency

CALA TIPS:

Consider formulae for measures of central tendency Consider formulae for calculating angles
Consider measuring tools for angles Consider tally table for raw data
