ADVANCED STEEL DESIGN
MTSE-106A
Time : Three Hours] {Maximum Marks : 60
Note : Attempt any Five questions. All questions carry equal
marks, Use of IS 800-2007 is allowed. Assume any
data suitably if missing and state clearly
1, Write notes on the following
(a) What is different type of sections and partial safety
factors
(b) Explain plstic, slender, compact and semi compact
section.
2. Explain design step of cantilever beam with example as
per IS 800:2007,
3. Determine the design axial load on the column section
ISHB 500. The height of the column is 4.75 m. It is
effectively restrained at mid height by a bracing member
in the Y-Y direction, but free to move in Z-Z direction
and both the ends of the column are pinned. Assume
E = 2x10° N/mm?, fy = 250 N/mm? and fb = 410 N/
mm
4, Design a stiffened seat connection to transfer a factored
end shear of 650 KN from a beam ISMB $00 to a column
ISHB 400 using M16 bolts of the products grade C and
the property class 4.6
(2)L-49207 15. Design a laterally unsupported I beam with simply
supported ends of effective span 6 m subjected to a
working load of 60 kN/m. Assume that full torsional and
warping restraints are provided at the supports and the
load acts on the upper flange which will have destabilizing
effect
6. Design a connection for a bracket to cary a factored
vertical load of 350 KN acting at 450 mm from the face
of the column ISHM250 using (a) Butt weld, (b) Fillet
weld. Take fy = 250 Nimm?,
7. Explain Robertson Design Curve and modification to its
approaches.
Design a Simply supported I-section to support the slab
of a hall 8.5 m = 24.5 m with beams spaced at 3 mele.
The thickness of the slab is 110 mm. Consider a floor
finish of 0.55 KNim?. Assume that adequate lateral support
is provided to the compression flange. Apply the check
for shear, web buckling and web crippling. Use fy —
250 N/m
