• The creole group arose in Malacca (Malaysia)
between the 16th and 17th centuries, when the
city was a port and base of the Portuguese.
• Some descendants speak a distinctive Kristang
language, a creole based on Portuguese. Today
the government classifies them as Portuguese
Eurasians.
• The site of the old city of Malacca was named
after the Myrobalans, fruit-bearing trees along
the banks of a river called Airlele (Ayer Leleh).

Introduction
• The Air lele river was said to originate from Buquet
China (present-day Bukit Cina ).
• Eredia cited that the city was founded by
Parameswara the first King of Malacca in 1411.
• Malacca's wealth attracted the attention of Manuel I,
King of Portugal and he sent Admiral Diogo Lopes de
Sequeira to find Malacca.
• to make a trade compact with its ruler as Portugal's
representative east of India.
• Sequeira arrived in Malacca in 1509.

Music Food
• The Portuguese music and dance are only
appeared in year 1952.
• The branyo dance (joget dance) was introduced
as the standard, final piece in all performances of
music and dance by Portuguese community.
• In ‘joget dance’ session, the audiences is invited
to dance with the branyo dancers.

1. Music
• They performs their dances and tunes for general
community at celebration such as wedding and
hotel banquets.
• Their musical instruments consists of violin,
accordion, guitar, rebana drum, tambourine and
the triangle.
• Portuguese culture are rich with art and its craft.
• Portuguese culture are also famous with their
legend about the The cock of Barcelos.
• While many of their cities show a modern stamp,
the Portuguese people take pleasure and pride in
continuing to produce the traditional crafts of
their ancestors.

2. Art & Craft


• The traditional crafts of their ancestors
are consist needlework, ceramic tiles,
carving, pottery.
• The Kristang language is formally called
Malacca-Melayu Portuguese Creole, made up of
elements of each.
• The Malay language, or Bahasa Malaysia, as it
is now called in Malaysia, has changed to
incorporate many Kristang words.
• For example, garfu is Kristang for "fork" and
almari is Kristang for "cupboard"; the Malay
language incorporated these Kristang words
whole.

3. Kristang Language
• The Portuguese in Malacca are using Kristang
language as an intermediate language among
them.
• Kristang, a minority language spoken and
understood by approximately 5000 persons, fifty
years old and above, in Malaysia and Singapore,
is under threat of attrition.
• Kristang, some of whom speak, read and write
fluent English will continue to use English more
frequently in years to come alongside the
Malaysian Language in their personal and
professional lives.
• Malaysian Portuguese food is a mix between
traditional Portuguese recipes, with traces of
Dutch, British, and local ingredients.
• The influences of Malay, Chinese, Indian and
Nyonya styles of cooking can also be seen.
• They like spicy food, and their love for fiery food
is evident in their most popular dish, the curry
debal which is really spicy.

4. Food
• Being largely a seafaring community, the cuisine
of the Malaysian Portuguese are mainly seafood-
based.
• Among the popular dishes are acar ikan (pickled
salt fish), tuna mornay (a baked tuna and cheese
casserole), prawn bastador, and their signature
cincaluk (fermented shrimp sauce).
• In Portuguese society appearance is very
important, especially in the cities.
• People are fashion conscious and believe that
clothes indicate social standing and success.
• They take great pride in wearing good fabrics
and clothes of the best standard they can afford.
• Their traditional clothing consist of berets,
stocking caps, baggy shirts and trousers for the
men.

5. Fashion
• Women wear long dresses and shawls.
• In other places the people dress entirely in black
or another dark colour for their daily activities,
but they put on colourful garments on special
occasions.
