Electronic Instrumentation Design Class Assignment 3

1. Describe Barkhausen criteria!

The Barkhausen criteria is a condition that’s required to operate a circuit as an oscillator. It states that
the loop gain has to be equal to unity in absolute magnitude, and the phase shift around the loop is 0 or
an integer multiple of 2𝜋

2. What is the differences between Colpitts and Hartley Oscillator?

Colpitts oscillator has a tap within 2 capacitors while Hartley has a tap with 2 coils. The feedback of
colpitts is derived from a capacitive divider, while Hartley feedback is derived with inductive divider.

3. R1 = R2 = 100kOhm. C1 = C2 = 1000pF. Determine the value of frequency of oscillations! Draw

the circuits!

R = 200kOhm C =
𝐶1𝐶2 1000 𝑥 1000
= = 500
𝐶1 + 𝐶2 2000

1
= 1590𝐻𝑧
2𝜋 𝑥 200 𝑥500. 10−9

4. R1=R2=R3=10kOhm. C1= C2=C3 = 150pF. Determine frequency oscillation!

1
2𝜋 𝑥 √6 𝑥 150 𝑥 10 𝑥 10−9
= 43338 Hz
