SUMMARY:

"José Rizal" is a 1998 Philippine historical drama film directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya. The film
tells the true story of Filipino patriot José Rizal, who was imprisoned under Spanish
colonization. The movie follows Rizal's journey from his early life to his execution.

Accused of treason, Dr. Jose P. Rizal awaits trial and meets with his government-appointed
counsel, Luis Taviel de Andrade. As they build the case for the defense, significant events from
Rizal's life prior to his incarceration are revealed.

The film highlights Rizal's struggles against colonial oppression and his fight for independence.
It intertwines fictional scenes from Rizal's life with excerpts from his novels "Noli Me Tangere"

“Jose Rizal” is a 1998 Filipino biographical movie directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya. The main
characters are Cesar Montano who portrayed Jose Rizal himself, Dominic Guinto who acted as
the young Rizal, Chin Chin Guttierez who portrayed Rizal’s common-law wife–Josephine
Bracken, and Mickey Ferriols who portrayed Leonor Rivera–Rizal’s true love. The other main
characters are Ronnie Lazaro who portrayed Rizal’s father–Francisco Mercado, Gloria Diaz who
portrayed Rizal’s mother–Teodora Alonzo, Pen Medina who portrayed Rizal’s beloved brother–
Paciano Mercado, Dennis Marasigan who acted as Marcelo H. Del Pilar, and Jaime Fabregas
who acted as the government-appointed counsel–Luis Taviel de Andrade. Moreover, the
actors/actresses who acted the characters in his two novels are Joel Torre who portrayed
Crisostomo Ibarra/Simoun, Monique Wilson who acted as Maria Clara, Nonie Buencamino who
acted as Elias, Roeder Camañag acted as Basilio, Richard Quan acted as Isagani, and Cristobal
Gomez who portrayed Padre Damaso. The movie received several awards and recognition. Some
of those awards are from the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), which won a total of
seventeen awards–one of those awards are the Best Actor which won by Cesar Montano, making
it the movie with the most MMFF award wins at that time and from the Gawad Union Award,
which is the director of the film–Marilou Diaz-Abaya won the Best Direction Award. Also, from
the Stars Award for Movie, in which “Jose Rizal” won the Movie of the Year award.

“Jose Rizal” tells the story of the Philippine National Hero, Jose Rizal, portrayed by Cesar
Montano. The film depicts Rizal’s life and works through a series of non-linear flashbacks,
reflecting on various aspects of his life as a writer, propagandist, lover, friend, brother, doctor,
and the man who inspired a revolution. The movie begins with Rizal’s imprisonment in Fort
Santiago due to his dissident activities. At the same time, in Balintawak, Andres Bonifacio and
the secret organization Katipunan start an uprising against Spanish tyranny by tearing their
