Dear Course Participants,

Subject Refresher Course organized under the aegis of the UGC Human Resource
Development Centre are geared towards broadening the mental horizon of the course
participants. As a hub of co-curricular activities this programme helps you appreciate better
your own potentials, your role as an agent of academic excellence and social engineering and
equips you to perform your assignment both as a teacher and as a responsible, pro-active
member of the wider community. This programme facilitates your understanding of an array
of truths. The present compilation by my worthy colleague, Dr. Faiza Abbasi embodies some
truths conveyed adroitly by parables and other pieces in this collection.

I wish you draw fruitfully on this collection which will make your personalities round and
your outlook on life better informed.

THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA


Preamble

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a
[SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC] and to secure to all its
citizens:
JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
LIBERTY of thoughts, expression, belief, faith and worship;
EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;
and to promote among them all
FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the *[unity and integrity of the
Nation];
IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do
HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.

42nd Amendment – Socialist, Secular and Integrity – these words were inserted by
Mrs. Indira Gandhi in the wake of the Emergency.
