Facebook in the Philippines

Social media has evolved from being a way for people to interact with friends and family
to become one of the primary factors shaping our society today. Today, the most popular social
media platform is Facebook, boasting over 3 billion active users. The majority of these users are
young adults, with teenagers using other social media platforms but one country where that is
an exception is the Philippines. While popular all over the world, in the Philippines, Facebook is
particularly dominant. In this essay, we will be exploring some of the potential factors that make
Facebook so popular.
Filipinos are very social people, social to the point that we have been voted as one of the
friendliest countries in the world, so it should come as no surprise that Filipinos do a lot of
messaging. One of the advantages of Facebook is that it offers free use of Messenger when
you're on mobile data as long as you don’t view any images. Obviously, this is a big advantage
over other messaging platforms that charge you for each text. Next is accessibility and
versatility. Facebook is easy-to-use and many people find it easier to navigate than other social
media platforms. Not only that, but Facebook also doesn’t have a ‘focus’ making it open to
anything. It isn’t focused on photos like Instagram or short and quick posts like Twitter. This
removes a lot of barriers that could potentially stop someone from using Facebook. Lastly, it
could also be just because we’re used to Facebook. Facebook was one of the earliest social
media platforms to be adopted in the Philippines. Filipinos have grown familiar with its interface
and we’ve just never stopped using it. Ever since it has just become the default social media
platform in the Philippines.
Overall, Facebook is a very popular social media platform that is particularly dominant in
the Philippines. This popularity can be attributed to a number of different factors such as free
messaging, its accessibility and versatility, and lastly its familiarity.
