8.7 Attenuator transmission setting

Problem:
After energy calibration the output energies at low fluences deviate from the target value
although all other energy values are in tolerance.
Required measurements: Ablation / Spot 2mm / Fluence 2J/cm² / time
- Measure the output energies after 300µs / freq. 4Hz
energy calibration at the following Therm / Spot 4mm / Fluence 0.5J/cm² / time
settings and adjust the attenuation 600µs / freq. 20Hz
up to the output energies for those
Therm / Spot 5mm / Fluence 0.5J/cm² / time
settings are inside the limit:
600µs / freq. 20Hz
Reason:
The transmission of the beam attenuator for small output power varies between different
production lots. Therefore the output energies at low fluences can deviate from the target
value although all the other energy values are in tolerance.
Solution:
- Install the software version 1.04.0
or higher and the service program
version 1.1.5 or higher.
- Connect the laptop with the device
and start the service program
- Go to „General“  „Mod Er-YAG“
 o.k.  “Dongle”
- Set new Laser attenuation value
- If the output is too high decrease
the attenuation value
- If the output is too low increase the
attenuation value
- A change of attenuation by 1%
changes the output energy by 3%
-  „save“  go back to user mode
 check the output values
Measures (software/hardware):
After each software upgrade check the output energy of the above fluence values and adjust
the attenuation factor.

Isolation transformer

The Isolation transformer in front of the laser power supply serves two purposes: additional
insulation for safety and adapt to different power supplies. The transformer has two 115V
primary windings and a secondary winding 230.

For voltages of 100-120 V primary windings are connected in parallel and at 220-240V in
series. Switching is done via jumpers on the terminal strip.

Cooling system
Water temperature sensor

Heat exchanger
Fan (low voltage)
Water reservoir
Port service dongle
Coolant pump

Flow switch (2L/min)

Air temperature sensor

The laser is cooled by a water-air heat exchanger. The heat exchanger has a capacity of 80W /
K. With a maximum water temperature of 45 ° C and an ambient of 30 ° C, the resulting 15 K
difference. The cooling capacity accordingly corresponds to 80 W / K x 15 K = 1200 W
(maximum)
The fan is controlled depending on the coolant temperature to reduce the noise pollution. The
minimum speed is at fixed to 30%, so a minimal cooling and ventilation is always given. From
35°C, the unit runs at the maximum speed.
The flow switch gives an open circuit at flow rates below 2l/min and it indicates a too weak flow.

In case of brownish coolant it must be replaced and cooling system cleaned.

Smoke evacuation assembly
Air out tube including noise reduction and dust filter

Smoke Evacuation motor

SEWR-PCB

throttle coil for SE motor

The smoke evacuation in MCL31 is designed for a wide voltage range. It can be operated
without a transformer 100-240 V. For this purpose a motor with operating voltage of 120V is
applied, which is controlled by electronics. These electronics measures the current power
supply voltage and represents the motor voltage so that it does not exceed 120V. This is done
via a PMW-activation: With 120V motor is powered by 100%, with 240V only at 50%. For
supply voltages below 120V, the motor rotates correspondingly slower, the suction is still given
completely.

During start of the motor coil acts as a short circuit and there are very high currents. These
currents are sufficiently slowed by the current in the motor throttle branch.

If the voltage at the motor exceed the limit, his power semiconductor is defective or the
temperature at the semiconductor rises too high, a fault bit is set and the SEWR PCB switches
off for safety reasons. To reset the fault bit you need to restart the device by briefly
disconnection g the unit from mains (main fuse). Typically, the disturbance ends with
irreparable damage of SEWR PCB. Replacement is usually required.

The Albatros 309B power supply combines the switch on circuit, the capacitor charger and
Simmer source for the flash lamp. In addition it provides the low voltage for control and cooling.
The capacitors required for the flash lamp are mounted externally. This makes it easy to define
the charging power to the particular.

The power supply is air-cooled with temperature-controlled fans. The maximum average output
power is 1500 VA. Control is via a combined interface with analog and digital signals.

Caution: The switch on circuit works with mains input. That’s why the switching elements is
high voltage present.

Shutter Cavity with flash lamp & ER-YAG rod Ignition transformer OC mirror & beam shaping lens armflange attenuator

HR mirror….coolant out coolant in aiming beam mount beam combiner energy head laser dump

Attention! During the ignition pulse the pump chamber is at high voltage!
Energy settings below 200mJ the attenuator is inside the beam path. So the energy is reduced
by approximately 70%. The out coupled energy is deflected to the laser dump. So the
resonator can be pumped with a higher energy, with the effect of a better stability at the lowest
energy settings.
