Job Purposes:
The technician agriculture mechanization is responsible for identifying opportunities for
mechanisation of both small and large scale cocoa plantations as well as developing and seeking
solutions to address these opportunities. These solutions should be scale appropriate and address
the needs of cocoa producers. To achieve this the incumbent will implement field trials to test and
improve potential solutions and develop mechanization protocols as required for the R&D program.
He/she is also responsible for organizing the data from the machinery and equipment trials, and
presenting the trial results to technical tracking reports.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Identify opportunities for mechanisation and develop or identify scale appropriate solutions
2. Conduct field trials of any new machinery and equipment in cocoa orchards to ascertain its utility
and propose improvements to improve efficacy and efficiency.
3. Assist the maintenance technician to install and maintain machinery and any new equipment.
4. Diagnose machinery operational problems and recommend corrective actions to maintenance
team.
5. Assist the team to establish goals, priorities and expectations in working with machinery in the
farm.
6. Monitor and calibrate mechanised equipment and tools regularly.
7. Keep and maintain records regarding the field trial results of new equipment.
8. Prepare reports and provide trial updates to management.
9. Participate in the engagement activities and technical meetings as required.
11. Contribute to the creation of a safe environment in the field by observing and practicing the safety
culture.
12. Complete any other duties as deemed appropriate by site management.

Context & Scope


The Technician Agriculture Mechanisation is an individual contributor and his/her source of work is
the Mars Cocoa Research Station (MCRS) Pangkep. The incumbent identifies opportunities for
mechanisation of cocoa production and creates solutions that improve quality and labour efficiency.
This will involve establishing trials on mechanical equipment and ensuring that all data is properly
collected, analyzed and reported. The Technician shall do his/her job according to all standard
operating procedures and the Mars safety standards. This position works closely with the Agronomy
scientists and Maintenance technician, and direct report to the Cocoa Research Manager Pangkep.
Education, Professional Qualification, Knowledge and Experiences
• Bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering or relevant background

Knowledge/Experience
• Minimum Qualifications:
Experience in the mechanisation of farm operations for perennial crops, or have the aptitude to
quickly learn this required skill set. Computer literacy. Clear and concise communicator. Ability to
write reports.
• Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in cocoa field research and plantation mechanisation. Ability to work outside, stand,
walk, kneel, bend and stoop for extended periods of time. Be able to lift up to 30 kg. Tolerate dust,
heat, farm chemicals and farm machinery.
