18 Assertion (A): A compass needle is placed near a current carrying wire. The 1
deflection of the compass needle decreases when the compass needle is
displaced away from the wire.
Reason (R): Strength of a magnetic field decreases as one moves away from a
current carrying conductor.
20 Assertion (A): The metals and alloys are good conductors of electricity. 1
Reason (R): Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin and it is not a good conductor
of electricity.

respectively. If the speed of light in glass is 2 × 108 m/s, find the speed of light
in water.
25 An electric heater rated 1100 W operates at 220 V. Calculate (i) its resistance, 2
and (ii) the current drawn by it.
OR
a) Draw the pattern of magnetic field lines produced by a current-carrying
circular loop showing the direction of current in the loop and the direction
of the magnetic field lines.
b) State the rule which can be applied to know the direction of magnetic field
lines in the above case.
Section-C
Q. No. 27 to 33 are short answer questions
27 a) Why should the metal sulphides and carbonates be converted to metal 3
oxides in the extraction process of metal Explain in detail?
b) Generally, when metals are treated with mineral acids, hydrogen gas is
liberated, but when metals (except Mn and Mg) are treated with HNO3,
hydrogen is not liberated. Why?
28 Two ores X and Y were taken. On heating these ores it was observed that 3
a) ore X gives CO2 gas, and

Write steps to convert these ores into metals, giving chemical equations of the
reactions that take place.
OR
a) With the help of a diagram explain the method of refining of copper by
electrolysis.

chemical equation of the reaction involved.
29 List three points of difference between nervous and hormonal mechanisms for 3
control and coordination in animals.
30 In flowering plants, the pollen grains are transferred to stigma by pollination but 3
the female germ cells are present in the ovary. Explain with the help of a
labelled diagram (only concerned parts), how the male germ cell reaches the
ovary.
33 You are provided with a resistor, a key, an ammeter, a voltmeter, four cells of 3
1.5 V each and few connecting wires. Using these circuit components, draw a
labelled circuit diagram to show the setup to study Ohm's law. State the
relationship between the potential difference (V) across the resistor and the
current (I) flowing through it. Also draw V-I graph, taking V on the X-axis.

SECTION - E
Q. No. 37 to 39 are case-based/data -based questions with 2 to 3 short
sub-parts. Internal choice is provided in one of these sub-parts.
37 Take a look around you. You will find that most of the common household 4
items such as sugar, vinegar, cooking gas, food, clothes etc., around us are
based on carbon. The gases nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide and fuels such
as natural gas, kerosene, diesel and petrol have one thing in common and that is
the nature of chemical bond between their atoms. All these, and many more
substances around us, have covalent bonds between their atoms.
a) Carbon element plays a very important role in our daily life. Name the
unique property of Carbon which results in formation of several
compounds of it?
b) Draw the structure of Cyclohexane.
c) Priyanka was explaining to Keerthi that carbon has 2 electrons in K shell
and 4 electrons in L shell. It can neither gain nor lose 4 valence electrons
to acquire the nearest noble gas configuration. Justify her statement by
giving a proper reason.
OR
c) Show the formation of bond between carbon and chlorine atoms.
38 In order to trace the inheritance of traits Mendel crossed pea plants having one 4
contrasting character or a pair of contrasting characters. When he crossed pea
plants having round and yellow seeds with pea plants having wrinkled and green
seeds, he observed that no plants with wrinkled and green seeds were obtained
in the F1 generation. When the F1 generation pea plants were cross-bred by
