MODULE 1: Significant ideas:increasing emphasis on the development of contextually appropriate
forms of pedagogy. Kumaravadivelu proposes three
pedagogic parameters—
particularity: specific backgrounds and needs of their learners
practicality:‘theorize from practice and practice what they theorize’
possibility: possibility links language teaching and social transformation by
drawing from ‘the sociopolitical consciousness that students bring with them
to the classroom

By adopting a more responsive and context-sensitive approach to teaching, we can better meet the
needs of our learners and promote more effective language learning. By promoting critical language
awareness, we can also help learners to become more engaged and active participants in the wider
social and political contexts in which they use language.

MODULE 2: Significant ideas: theory as product and theory as process may be useful in this context.
Theory as product refers to the content knowledge of one’s discipline; theory as process refers to
the intellectual activity.
a teacher’s theory of practice should be based on different types of knowledge:
(a) speculative theory (by which he refers
to the theory conceptualized by thinkers in the field),
(b) the findings of empirical research, and
(c) the experiential knowledge of practicing teachers.
None of these, however, should be presented as the privileged source of knowledge. He advises
teachers to approach their own practice with “principles drawn from the consideration of these
different types of knowledge” and urges teacher educators “to concentrate less on what teachers
should know, and more on how they might think” In other words, the primary concern of teachers
and teacher educators should be the depth of critical thinking rather than the breadth of content
knowledge.
