INTRODUCTION
I first had the idea for this blanket back in the winter of 2020 when most of us were in
‘Lockdown’. The stars above have always reminded me that however dark things seem,
there is always a glimmer of light and that we are never truly alone. I wanted to capture
that feeling of hope and guidance to create a cosy, celestial blanket to warm up the
chilly, dark nights.
If you wish to substitute the colours, I would suggest choosing a fade from light to dark
with 8 colours, number them 1 - 8 from light to dark and follow the pattern instructions
with the corresponding colour number. You will also need a
colour for your stars. For the stars I used Stylecraft Special DK
in Mustard. I used two 100g balls of each colour. I was able to
make 13 hexagons from one 100g ball of yarn.
Colour Schematic: The diagram above shows the colour layout I used for my blanket.
Below are the colours I used for the blocks, with their corresponding numbers.
Each block pattern gives the amount of blocks needed in each colour, to create the
above layout. I used Stylecraft Special DK in Mustard as ‘star colour’.

SUPPLIES & SIZING
If you wish to make this blanket in alternative DK yarn, but still create the starburst effect,
you will need 200g of each of 8 colours for the blocks, plus 200g of star colour.
Order your colours from light to dark and number them from 1 - 8 in the table below.
I have listed the Stylecraft colours I used in the middle column. HH: Highland Heathers DK.
Colour 2 HH Bracken
Colour 4 HH Firth
Colour 5 HH Campbell
Colour 7 HH Loch
Colour 8 HH Thistle
Rnd 6: With star colour, working in back loops only, begin with a
standing dc in first tr after a skipped st, dc in blo of next tr.
Now work a fpdtr2tog: the first dtr will be worked around the
fptr, rnd 4, to the right, the second dtr around the fptr, rnd 4, to
the left.
Skip 1 st, *dc in blo of each of the next 3 st’s.
Work a fpdtr2tog: with first tr to the right (this will already have
a st around it) and the 2nd tr to the left, skip 1 st*
repeat from *to* around, ss to first dc made.
Fasten off.
Total: 12 fpdtr2tog, 36 dc blo.
When working through the back loop, I also place my hook through
Tip the hidden 3rd loop behind the stitch. This gives a tighter stitch and
a neater finish.
Rnd 8: Dc in next st, *(ch 3, skip 1 st, dc in next st) until corner
sp, in corner sp work: (ch 3, dc, ch 3, dc),
then (ch 3, skip 1 st, dc in next st)* repeat from *to* around,
ss to first dc made.
Fasten off.
Total: 42 dc, 42 ch-3-loops.
Pattern
STAR BLOCK TWO
You will make two versions of this block, a two colour version and a plain one.
Two colour:
Make 6 using star colour for rounds 1 and 2, followed by block colour 1
(Life Teal Nepp).
Make 6 with star colour for rounds 1 and 2, followed by block colour 5
(Highland Heather Campbell).
Plain one colour: Make 12 all rounds in colour 3 (Life Teal).
Make 12 all rounds in colour 6 (Life Navy).
Make 12 all rounds in colour 7 (Highland Heather Loch).
Rnd 7. Dc in next st
(ch 3, skip 1 tr, dc in next tr) x 2
ch 3, skip 1, in ch-sp work: (dc, ch 3, dc)
*(ch 3, skip 1, dc in next tr) x 5
ch 3, skip 1, in ch-sp work: (dc, ch 3, dc)*
repeat from *to* 5 times
(ch 3, skip 1 tr, dc in next tr) 3 times, omit last dc on
final repeat, instead ss to first dc made. Fasten off
Total: 42 dc (7 per side) 42 ch-3 loops.
Pattern
STAR BLOCK FOUR
For this block you will use star colour for rounds 1 and 2,
then again for round 5.
Block colour will be used for all other rounds.
Make 6 with block colour 2 (Highland Heather Bracken)
Make 6 with block colour 7 (Highland Heather Thistle)
This next round you will be working over the previous rnds and
around the puffs from rnd 2 to create a star shape. This rnd is
slightly fiddly and it is important you begin in the right stitch.
Place a stitch marker in the first dc after the st where you finished
the last round.
If you find the ch-3’s on this next round are making your work too
tight, you can ch 4 instead.
Rnd 7: ss into corner ch-sp, *(dc, ch 3, dc) into ch-sp, (ch 3, skip
1 st, dc into next st) until next ch-sp* Repeat from *to* around.
Fasten off.
Total: 42 dc, 42 ch-3 loops.
Pattern
STAR BLOCK FIVE
For this block you will use star colour for rounds 1 and 3.
All other rounds will be with block colour.
Make 6 using block colour 3 (Life Teal)
Rnd 4: With block colour, you will be working through both layers
from rnds 2 and 3 at the same time.
Start with a standing dc; work through fpdtr and ch-sp behind
at the same time. Dc again in same place.
*(2 dc through next tr and ch-sp behind) twice.
2 dc through fpdtr and ch-sp behind*
repeat from *to* around, omitting final 2 dc on last repeat,
instead ss to first dc made. Don’t fasten off.
Total: 48 dc.
A. B. Rnd 6: For this round you will be working mainly into rnd 4, so you
will need to fold the chains behind out of the way.
With block colour, begin in first st of rnd 4 (pic A) after a fpdtr,
with a standing *dc in tr, dc in next tr. In the next tr (this already
has a st in the blo) work: (dc, ch 2, dc) corner made.
Dc in each of next 2 tr from rnd 4.
Next work a dc through the top of the fpdtr rnd 5 AND through
the ch-sp behind from rnd 4 (pic B)*
repeat from *to* around, ss to first dc made.
Don’t fasten off.
Total: 42 dc (7 per side) 6 ch-2-sp corners.
Pattern
STAR BLOCK SEVEN
These blocks are all plain, all rounds are made in one colour.
Do not fasten off until the block is complete.
Make 6 of these in colour 2 (Highland Heather Bracken).
Make 12 in colour 4 (Highland Heather Firth).
Make 12 in colour 5 (Highland Heather Campbell).
Make 12 in colour 8 (Highland Heather Thistle)
Back
Front
These photos show what the joining looks like from the front and back of the blanket.
Make sure every single hexagon side is joined to another one.
As you work around, you may find yourself zigzagging up and down the blocks, then
having to add in short joining rows between the missed sides. I found it helpful to keep
laying out the blanket to make sure each join was in the correct place.
You will also need to be mindful of which direction your four pointed stars are facing
(star blocks 3 and 4) as you may want the stars to all point in the same direction, or
point towards the blanket corners. Check the photos if you’re not sure on placement.
Border
FINISHING TOUCHES
Once your blocks are all joined together you will have a large hexagonal blanket with
zigzag edges. The edge will already have a round of ch-sp loops from the blocks, which
we can work our border stitches into. If you have a favourite border in mind, feel free to
add as you wish.
Below I have detailed the border I chose to add. I want the stars to be the main focal
point of the blanket, which is why I chose a fairly narrow and simple edging.
Rnd 1: Attach colour 6 (Life Navy) in first ch-sp after a corner tip and
Ch 2 (counts as htr) htr again in same st,
(work 2 htr in next ch-sp) 5 times.
*Work a tr2tog with first leg in the next ch-sp (should be last sp of
this block) and the 2nd leg in the next ch-sp (should be first sp of
next block), (work 2 htr in next ch-sp) 6 times.
In corner tip ch-sp work 5 htr,
(work 2 htr in next ch-sp) 6 times*
repeat all the way around your blanket.
Note: when you reach the 6 straight edge blocks, work 2 htr in each ch-sp
between corner sp’s.
Join with a ss to top of beg ch-2. Fasten off.
Rnd 2: Attach colour 8 (Highland Heather Thistle) in first htr after a
tr2tog with a standing dc
*(ch 1, skip 1, dc in next st) 6 times,
in middle htr of 5htr group work (dc, ch 2, dc),
(ch 1, skip 1, dc in next st) 7 times,
ch 1, skip tr2tog, dc in next st*
repeat around the blanket, ss to first st made. Fasten off.
Note: when working along the straight edge blocks, you may have to add
additional (dc, ch 1, skip 1) between corners.
Rnd 3: Attach colour 7 (Highland Heathers Loch) with a standing dc
in first ch-sp after a corner tip.
*(Ch 1, skip dc, dc in next ch-sp) 6 times
skip the (dc, ch 1, dc), dc in next ch-sp,
(ch 1, skip dc, dc in next ch-sp) 6 times,
ch 1, in corner ch-2-sp work (dc, ch 2, dc)
ch 1, skip dc, dc in next ch-sp*
repeat around the blanket, ss to first dc made. Fasten off.
Note: when working along the straight edge blocks, you may have to add
additional (dc in ch-sp, ch 1, skip dc) between corners.
Rnd 4: with star colour, begin in any st with standing dc and crab
stitch in each st around. Ss to first st made and fasten off.
