Introduction
Volkswagen’s new Tiguan Allspace is based on the successful Tiguan sport utility vehicle. 2016 to the end of December 2017, more than 40,000 second generation Tiguans were

mm, which is an increase of 215 mm over the Tiguan. The resulting interior volume gives
plenty of room for more luggage and a third row of seats. This row is ideally suited to
people up to five feet two inches tall and, in the UK, it is included as standard.
Therefore the Tiguan Allspace sits above the regular Tiguan as a separate vehicle in
the comprehensive Volkswagen range. In extending its line-up of vehicles still further,
Volkswagen expects to attract new customers to the brand. From its launch in June

To make access to that luggage space as easy as possible, the tailgate opens
electrically via either a button on the keyfob or by waving a foot under the car,
depending on the vehicle trim.
Volkswagen’s advanced petrol and diesel engines power the Tiguan Allspace. The
line-up comprises five turbocharged engines, two petrol and three diesel. The petrol
options include the 1.4-litre TSI 150 PS unit with Active Cylinder Technology (ACT).
This means that two of the four cylinders shut down when the Tiguan Allspace is
cruising, to further enhance fuel economy. This engine is available in front-wheel drive
configuration only, with a choice of a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG gearbox.
Each diesel engine is a 2.0-litre TDI unit. All have Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR),
which means they feature the AdBlue engine additive. The 150 PS option is particularly
versatile, and is offered in front-wheel or 4MOTION four-wheel drive options and, in
both cases, with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG gearbox.
Greater power is provided by the 190 PS unit, which is only available with 4MOTION
four-wheel drive and a seven-speed DSG gearbox. The most powerful Tiguan Allspace
engine is the 2.0-litre TDI with an output of 240 PS; this is also equipped with a
4MOTION four-wheel drive system and a seven-speed DSG gearbox. In terms of the
sales split between 4MOTION and two-wheel drive, the ratio is very close to 1:1 in the
regular Tiguan and this is expected to be the same in the Tiguan Allspace.
Three high-spec trim levels comprise the Tiguan Allspace range – SE Navigation, SEL
and R-Line. This is in contrast to the regular Tiguan, which begins with the familiar S
and SE trims. For the Tiguan Allspace it’s SE Navigation that marks the entry point.
The top selling model is predicted to be the SE Nav with the 2.0-litre 150 PS TDI engine
and six-speed manual gearbox.

feature Volkswagen’s Discover Navigation infotainment system that comprises an 8.0-inch
colour touchscreen and a variety of navigation options. Also included is DAB digital radio, a
CD player, a Bluetooth phone connection for two devices and two USB connections.
Safety systems feature strongly in the Tiguan Allspace range, with Electronic Stability
Control, ASR (Traction Control) and Lane Assist standard on every model. Adaptive Cruise
Control (ACC), also standard, takes the strain out of longer journeys by tracking the car
ahead and automatically accelerating and braking the Tiguan Allspace to maintain a safe
gap. It works in conjunction with the standard Front Assist system, which uses radar to
give the driver a visual and audible early warning if a potential collision is detected and
then primes the brakes in preparation for an emergency stop.
SEL and R-Line trims have Active Info Display as standard, which is a 12.3-inch high
resolution TFT display screen in the instrument binnacle. This is customisable and
can show the driver a range of information about the car including fuel usage and
consumption, navigation instruction, a rolling map and the classic speed and gear display.
Continuing with SEL and R-Line, these models have a panoramic sunroof that is
complemented by LED ambient lighting. LEDs feature on the exterior, too, with LED
headlights and LED daytime running lights. These include Dynamic Light Assist, which
uses a masking function to allow the main beam to be left on continuously without
dazzling oncoming traffic. Dynamic Curve Lighting also features. It improves vision by
turning the side lights in the direction of the steering wheel.
Tiguan Allspace SELs with the 2.0-litre BiTDI 240 PS diesel engine are equipped with
Dynamic Chassis Control, which offers the driver a choice of three suspension settings
ranging from Sport to Comfort and Normal.
R-Line specification adds a sporty edge to the styling of the Tiguan Allspace. The 19-inch
‘Victoria’ alloy wheels that feature on the SEL trim are swapped for 20-inch ‘Suzuka’
wheels. Sports suspension lowers the ride height by approx. 15 mm, unless the optional
Dynamic Chassis Control is fitted.
Alongside the 20-inch wheels is the R-Line styling pack, which adds a rear roof spoiler
and a ‘Piano Black’ front air intake and rear diffuser. The front and rear bumpers are
unique to the R-Line trim, as are the body-coloured side skirts with chrome trim. On the
inside the rooflining is black and the front seats are trimmed with ‘Race’ cloth and ‘San

Production
Around 415,000 vehicles were built at Volkswagen de México’s Puebla plant in
2016. Located 75 miles south east of Mexico City, the factory builds the Beetle
and Beetle Cabriolet, as well as some variants of the Golf and Jetta. From the
middle of 2017 it also became the home of Tiguan Allspace production.
Like the Beetle, every Tiguan Allspace is built in this one facility for export
around the world.
History
Volkswagen de México was founded in 1964 and as of January 2017 it had 14,600
employees. As well as the Puebla plant there is the Silao engine manufacturing
facility that opened in January 2013 and was the Volkswagen Group’s 100th
plant. In 2016 it produced 327,000 engines, some of which were exported to
the Chattanooga plant in the USA. In 2016 the Volkswagen Group sold 247,000
vehicles in Mexico.

The Tiguan Allspace can be ordered with an ‘Off road pack’ pack with a special front
end that provides an approach angle of 24 degrees instead of the usual 16.9 degrees.
The departure angle at the rear is 14.5 degrees for all versions, while the ramp angle is

on exact engine and gearbox specified.
Like the Tiguan, the Tiguan Allspace models with 4MOTION all-wheel drive feature the
high-tech 4MOTION Active Control. This is an intuitively operated rotary/push-button
switch that is located on the centre console and allows the driver to activate one of
four driving modes. When the driver turns the switch to the left one of the two road
profiles, ‘Onroad’ or ‘Snow’, is activated. When the switch is turned to the right, the
driver selects one of the two off-road profiles: ‘Offroad’ (automatic setting of off-road
parameters) or ‘Offroad Individual’ (variable settings). When driving off-road, 4MOTION
Active Control lets drivers switch the assistance systems in seconds with a single
manual operation.
Off-road, the Tiguan Allspace is a confident performer. The electronic accelerator pedal
can be metered precisely and if the 4MOTION is equipped with DSG, the dual clutch
gearbox upshifts later. The driver can avoid mandatory shifts by changing gears via the

Interior design
The Tiguan Allspace combines versatility, practicality and comfort. When its designers
embarked on meeting these goals, they began by extending the wheelbase. This
directly increased space inside the car – for example the middle row passengers have
an extra 54 mm of knee room – and allowed the addition of the standard third row of
seats. In terms of the total length, the Tiguan Allspace is longer than the ‘classic’ Tiguan
and features a larger rear overhang.
It’s quick and easy to fold the seats flat and open up even more space. With the third
seat row folded flat, where it integrates into the cargo floor, the luggage volume
increases by 85 litres compared to the regular Tiguan model. Tiguan Allspace, like
Tiguan, features a second row rear bench that can slide fore or aft by a total of 180
mm. With this moved to its forward-most position the luggage volume is a formidable
700 litres. Even more impressive: with the middle and the third rows of seats folded
flat luggage volume is increased to 1,775 litres.

Most obviously, the rear doors are longer and this fulfils the objective of ensuring

everything is new when compared to the regular Tiguan. The bodywork follows a
different contour and the side window design features a sharper curve upwards
where it rises directly behind the C-pillar.

The desired speed limit is set by the driver via a touch of a button and the
Adaptive Cruise Control will then brake and accelerate the car up to that limit. The
safe-distance technology builds on the familiar cruise control system by adding
a radar sensor. It immediately detects traffic slowing ahead and automatically
reduces the Tiguan Allspace’s speed to match. If the car is too close to the vehicle
in front, it will warn the driver in two stages. First with visual and acoustic signals,
and then with a short braking jolt. If necessary, the system will bring the Tiguan
Allspace to a complete stop. Adaptive Cruise Control
It does this with the help of the Front Assist system which primes the brakes if it
senses a collision is likely, shortening the stopping distance when the driver hits
the brake pedal.
Lane Assist
Lane Assist is fitted to every Tiguan Allspace. If it senses the car is drifting out of
its lane it gently counter-steers back on line.
Since many accidents are caused by cars leaving their lanes when the driver’s
concentration falters, this system makes driving safer and easier. The lane-
keeping assistant uses a camera located in the rear-view mirror unit to monitor
the road markings and prevent an unintended deviation. The system only
intervenes if the Tiguan Allspace’s indicators are not activated, so if the driver
wants to change lanes and signals their intention, the intelligent system
recognises this and Lane Assist temporarily switches off.
If the driver lets go of the steering wheel, a visual and audible warning is triggered
and Lane Assist switches off after approximately five seconds. Lane Assist

Judging the speed and distance of other road users isn’t always easy, so Front Assist
is constantly monitoring the road ahead. It uses radar sensors to measure the distance
and relative speed of other vehicles and provides the driver with an early warning
system. If it detects a potential rear-end collision, Front Assist alerts the driver visually
and audibly, while also preparing the brakes for emergency braking.
The City emergency brake function is active in urban traffic at speeds up to 19 mph. If
the driver doesn’t brake sufficiently, Front Assist boosts the braking pressure to prevent a
collision. And if the driver doesn’t brake at all Front Assist automatically steps in.
Emergency Assist
Emergency Assist offers more safety than ever. If the driver becomes incapacitated for
health reasons the system slows the car down, within system limits, and brings it to a
complete stop, traffic behind permitting. It’s available as an option on Tiguan Allspace
models fitted with a DSG automatic gearbox.
Side Scan
Emergency Assist combines ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), Side Assist (lane change
system), Lane Assist (lane departure warning) and Park Assist (park assist steering)
into a single system. Once the sensors determine that the driver has not operated the
accelerator, brake pedal or steering wheel over a specified period of time, the system
network implements specifically targeted countermeasures.
The driver is initially warned and “woken” by means of acoustic, optical and haptic
signals (braking jolt). If the driver still does not respond, the Emergency Assist system
activates the hazard warning lights; additionally the Tiguan Allspace initiates slight
steering manoeuvres using Park Assist (electromechanical power steering intervention)
and Lane Assist (camera based lane detection) in order to alert fellow road users to the
hazardous situation.
Side Scan
Optional on all versions of the Tiguan Allspace, Side Scan increases safety and driver
convenience. It’s a radar sensor-controlled warning system for lane changing and
monitoring the blind spot. It works by flashing an orange light in the door mirror if a
vehicle is in the blind spot.

This helps the driver to manoeuvre with confidence in any direction. The driver can
select up to 12 possible views of the vehicle: from the front, rear or side, on either full
or split-screen displayed on the infotainment system. Should the optional Discover
Navigation Pro system be specified, the driver will also gain a bird’s-eye view around
the Tiguan Allspace.
Trailer Assist
The Tiguan Allspace effortlessly tows a trailer or caravan and, depending on the choice
of engine, can tow up to a maximum weight of 2.5 tons. Trailer Assist, which is available
in a package including Park Assist and a rear-view camera, helps the driver reverse
more easily and accurately with a trailer or caravan attached.
An optical display visualises actual and possible steering angles in the instrument
cluster. Reverse steering is automatic, with direction controlled via the mirror
adjustment switch which acts as a joystick, while the driver controls the pedals and
keeps a good look-out. The feature, optional on all models, is available in conjunction
with the optional swivelling towbar.

Infotainment systems
The Tiguan Allspace comes with the Discover Navigation infotainment system as
standard equipment. It is part of the latest generation of Modular Infotainment
Matrix (MIB) devices.
Discover Navigation
With its clear glass surface and integrated eight-inch colour display (800 x 400
resolution, 20.3 cm screen diagonal), the design of the Discover Navigation system is
reminiscent of a tablet. In addition to two rotary/push-button controls, the system has
eight function buttons.
The sound of the infotainment system (4 x 20 watts) is output over eight loudspeakers.
Along with SD card and Aux-In interfaces, it offers a USB port (also compatible with
Apple), a Bluetooth connection for mobile phones and a CD drive which is of course
MP3-compatible.
The GPS-based navigation system includes software updates at no charge for three
years. In addition, this includes a licence for Car-Net ‘Guide and Inform’ services which
is also free-of-charge for three years.

Information and VED bands with optional tyres
CO2 emissions and VED bands with optional wheels.
Effect of wheel size on CO2 emissions and VED Bands
Choosing larger alloy wheels than standard as an option, may result in increased fuel consumption as well as higher CO2 emissions and subsequently increased Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) band and BIK rates paid by company car drivers
may increase. This is due to the fact that larger wheels have both more aerodynamic drag and more mechanical drag, resulting in increased rolling resistance and increased wind resistance. As a result, the VED band that the vehicle
falls into may increase from its original VED band when fitted with standard size wheels. In some instances, the recommended ‘On the road’ retail price paid for the vehicle may increase as a result of the increased VED rate. The chart
below shows CO2 emissions and the related VED bands for vehicles with both standard-fit wheels and larger optional alloy wheels, as well as the change in VED band.
