current or past examples of hurricanes and built environment, ways to
protect ourselves and structures, fun facts, and the conclusion.

What is a hurricane?-Nathan

So what is a hurricane? A hurricane is a massive spiral of wind and rain that

forms over warm ocean waters. Hurricanes have heavy rain and destructive
winds that reach 74 miles per hour and are approximately 300 miles wide. In
the centre of the Hurricane is the mostly calm eye.

Where do hurricanes occur?-Jade

Now where do these monstrous storms Wreak havoc? Hurricanes hang out in
warm ocean water, around the Atlantic basin, Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea,
Gulf of Mexico, eastern North Pacific, and Central North Pacific.

Impact on natural and built environment-iVAN

For the natural environment, they uproot plants, kill land animals and
devastate natural areas. they also wreck energy facilities which causes us to
have no electricity and change the salinity in water making it tough for fish
to survive. In a built environment, the water seeps into buildings or by
infiltrating through roofs. They flood low areas, destroy roofs, and damage
sewers and the coastal regions.

Current and past examples of hurricanes-Anson

Let's talk about some real-life hurricane legends like

Hurricane Idalia which is a Category 4. Hurricane Ivan is a Category 5.

Hurricane Katrina which is a Category 5.Hurricane Carol which is a category 3.
Hurricane Jerry is a category 1. Galveston hurricane which is a category 4

Current or past examples of hurricanes on natural and built environment

FOR THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, THEY CHANGE SALTWATER, TRAP FRESHWATER FISH
AND KILL LAND ANIMALS. They drown HUMANS, FLIP TREES OVER AND RAISE LAKE LEVELS
SO HIGH, THEY BECOME DANGEROUS. hURRICANES INCREASE WATER INTRUSION WHICH
MEANS WATER COMING INTO AREAS YOU DON’T WANT THEM TO BECAUSE OF WIND SPEED
INCREASE.

FOR THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT, HURRICANES CAN DESTROY OVER 120 MILLION CUBIC
YARDS WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN A PLAYGROUND BUT INSTEAD, A WASTELAND. THEY
FLOOD UNDERGROUND PARKING AND WRECKED 350,000 VEHICLES AND 750,00
HOUSEHOLD ITEMS. hURRICANES RELEASE OIL FROM FACILITIES, TOXIC CHEMICALS FROM
SINKS AND DESERT HOMES.

Ways to protect ourselves and structures-Anson

Now here’s the important part - How can You protect yourself by seeking
shelter in a small windowless room away from hanging lights and glass doors.
Find a spot that won’t flood, evacuate if necessary and secure outdoor
objects.

Fun Facts-Nathan

Now time for some mind-blowing fun facts. Did you know that Hurricane
Katrina wreaked havoc on over 521 million trees and sadly claimed the lives of
1,836 people? Hurricanes are no joke - they can zip around at speeds of 20
miles per hour, be VERY calm AND PLAIN at sea, and last for two weeks or more!
And get this - the term "hurricane" is from the Caribbean god of evil. How
crazy is that?
